Most pilots are given more detailed designs/smoother animation. The pilot is what you're trying to sell to the company so you gotta make it as appealing as possible. It's like how game commercials have pre-rendered videos that likely would never run on the console.

NGL, the animation almost reminds me of The Iron Giant and Randy was voiced by James Arnold Taylor. I do like how the official design of the show was more experimental and edgy it definitely stood out but this more traditional animation is really charming. I really like it. The animation in this pilot is way better than the final product, but the acutal art style and designs feel so lacking to me. Idk if its just me being so used to the Randy universe that we all know, but something about the character designs feels like they need heavy re-tooling, especially The Ninja. His suit doesn’t really stand out to me in any significant way. There aren’t any especially striking visuals about it to me (like the red markings on the final’s mask, gloves, and boots), and the exposed hands and visible sneakers just makes it feel like a storebought ninja costume. While this pilot is really cool to see, it also makes me appreciate Jhonen Vasquez’s creative influence on the final product way more.

One thing i really regretted about that show is the relationship between Randy and Heidi... they're designed to be partnered, but they fail keeping them connected

Regardless of which incarnation it is, I still love Howard! 🥰 Although, this version of him is a bit more. . . Polite 😅

I love both this and the final show, for different reasons. The official show is extremely entertaining with it's humer and magic, but I absolutely LOVE the look of the pilot. The animation is more expressive, the characters feel way more like they're actual freshmen. The designs, though more simple, also lean on this. It shows a more of a real life setting for teens just barely entering high-school, being the youngest, the less cool kids. I'll say again that I am happy for the final result, but this was a very nice and eye opening look at how much this show has developed.

I always forget, but how much of the original made it into the final product?

I love this style! I don’t know how- or why- but it reminds me of The Iron Giant
