In fact the actual Volkswagen Campers still have the rotatable front seat. And I can tell you it is exactly as fantastic to use as the guy says, turns your T6 California into a rolling condo with penthouse roof. Unfortunately you can’t buy one of these in the U.S.

Randy is a genius and maybe the world's most lovable dork. I always get excited to see him on the show! He's just a wholesome goofy delight. That treatment on the rear of the van looked kinda lame in the garage but boy did it look slick out on the roads! It really does have the cachet of an old Airflow... so much of Randy's work is like something you've never seen before yet somehow seems familiar. Brilliant.

I agree. Randy Grubb looks like someone out of the psychedelic 60s to early 70s. And so does the bus. At least the bus has been tastefully modified where it counts. It hasn't been lowered and chopped to pieces, or stretched out of shape. The powertrain isn't some V6 or V8 engine. I like that it's a boxer engine powering this thing.

This just made me smile! The sound of the engine, and the floppy gears stick brought back memories. My Dad had a 65 with the elevating roof. He replaced it with a 71 which I bought off him in 72, and ran for a couple of years. Many years later he bought a 72 Westfphalia which I also bought off him to use as a crew vehicle. I'm am amazed that the swapped engine still sounds like a VW! In the late 80s I looked at buying an 88 with 4 wheel drive and the 2L Passat engine, but ended up going with a Renault Expace, also AWD and a 2.9L V6, because it had more room. A friend has a 66 23 window which he has lowered and fitted with a 3.3L Porche engine! An insane vehicle, particularly since he lives in London.

Love the split windows.. I added a snrf (from a wrecked microbus) to my 1965 VW w/a factory camper package back in '77. With a built engine and dual carbs it was a cool surf camper. A blast to drive and travel in. Biggest sunroof ever for sleeping under the stars! 😁 The kicker.. I paid $485 for the bus and 50 bucks for the snrf back in '77. Sold it for a paltry $2000 because few people wanted them. Now they're worth a fortune. Who woulda thunk.

What memories this brought back. I flew up to Anchorage in 1968, then hitch-hiked all over Alaska and back down to California. I rode for several miles with some hippies in a VW bus with the little window near the roof, pop out windshield, and sun roof. Several times half of us would have to get out to decrease the weight so the bus could make it up the hill. We would walk up the hill and get back in the bus. I had a great time.

@@gregh7457 I caught a ride with a student from Cal Berkley driving a Chevy convertible shortly before entering Canada. I helped him pay for gas. He drove all the way to my parent's house in Chico, CA. If you saw me hitch-hiking, I did not look like a hippy. I looked like a young version of The Marlboro Man, wearing cowboy boots, Levi 501's, Levi denim shirt, and, blue Levi jacket and aviator sun glasses. I got rides from lots of woman and girls on that trip. After the long convertible ride through Canada, Washington, Oregon, and Northern California, I was hooked. I bought my own convertible, a 1965 Falcon Sprint.

I’ll never forget driving across the country in a ‘57 with all original roof windows and cloth sunroof intact. Overpriced at $350. From the windows up, it was great. The bottom? Not so much. We push started it about 90% of the time. My two boys, now 38 and 43 were trapped in a playpen behind the cockpit. No one would have thought of a baby seat, nor most any other safety concern for that matter. Cruise control, the toolbox on the accelerator pedal. We even traded places with the bus running down the highway. Life threatening even at 40 mph. I wonder what the Randy Grubb version would sell for?

I've rode shotgun in AND driven a friend's '73 camper which was bone stock. Although the HP was meager, it had some torque. I remember one day Wilfred (my friend) was driving and we had stopped at a red light. When the light turned green, the vehicle next to us took off and "treed" us properly. At the next traffic light, when the light turned green, Wilfred put his right foot through the proverbial floor and came off the clutch and we got across the intersection before the vehicle in the next lane (the same one which had treed us at the previous traffic light). We returned the favor! I later drove that '73 camper about 100 miles (160 Km) on the highway and the shifter bushings were gone, so hunting for gears was a thing. But it quite comfortably got up to 55 - 60 MPH (88 - 100 Km/h). I doubt it would have gone much past that speed comfortably, but it got there and cruised at highway speed for most of the trip. For those wondering about the expression "to tree someone" or having been "treed": It starts on the drag strip - drag racing (0 - 60, 1/8 mile, ¼ mile, in a straight line)... The set of lights at the starting line is called a "Christmas tree" and those lights indicate staging, starting, and if either of the drivers "jumps" (as in "jumps the gun" - started before the green light). So, to tree someone is to get out ahead of them when the light turns green. Some details about drag racing and the tree have been glossed over or summarized to keep this FYI from becoming an epistle in and of itself. And, the Defensive Driving Instructor would seriously frown on us flooring it as soon as the traffic light turns green - easy way to get t-boned by a driver on the perpendicular street getting caught late for the yellow. Don't try this at home.

man, im 60 and grew up around drag racing and even had a '67 chevelle bracket racer in the 80's and never heard the term "treed".

You're awesome Jay. Still diggin' and changin' gears. This was almost like hanging out back at the garage with fun mechanics. Something many mechanics don't get credit for when dealing with all the aggravating greasy bleeding knuckles of mysterious puzzles to fix daily is having a silly sense of humor. Growing up is optional.

I love Randy. Life is his canvas. May we all take inspiration from his work, his work ethic, and his enthusiasm. He who works with his hands is a laborer. He who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman. He who works with his hands and his head and his heart is an artist. .

I had a 1959 rusty VW bus. They had 36 hp in stock form, nowhere near the 60 hp thrown out “off the cuff” near the beginning of the video. Incredible vehicle and an incredible builder/artist.
