I'm envious of Americas public land. A bunch of our land here in Canada is a very grey area. Where I live on Vancouver Island almost the whole darn island is logged which in turn gives the logging companies near complete control of access, even on leased crown land. If there is active logging and it's a safety issue most hunters etc. are happy to oblige but after the work, when that land sits there with a gate and a no trespassing sign we wonder where our representatives are. You are lucky (and unique) to have established organizations to mange the people land.

Very interesting and thoughtful insight into the blm land, which many may know and many may not know is being sold off to developers here in California, even in national park lands. Everywhere in california it seems even in the most pristine and desirable places one would want to recreate you are going to be in someone's front yard, not sure how we got to this point in california but it all happened in the last 20 years and there seems to be no way to stop this use of blm land.

Public land is just that public land and MUST be accessible to public yet million of acres are not because they are surrounded by private land owners telling the public "no access". They (the private land owners) say they are the stewards protecting public land... Wrong, but they get away with it.. Our constitution gives the public the RIGHT to access PUBLIC LAND!

@@Fresh_Tracks I have a follow up question. I am an outdoorsman and comfortable with firearms. I have always been curious about hunting. Having most recently watched "Stars in the Sky: A Hunting Story" by Steven Rinella and highly inspired by it. I live in Southern California. There are no BLM managed lands in TN. The vast majority are in the 12 western states. Search online for Public Land Statistics and it will list where lands are located (Table 1-4). It also has a short history of how the lands came to be managed by BLM.

You don't need to pay for dispersed camping on BLM land, only in their improved campgrounds.

@@Fresh_Tracks the only place I can camp in my State of South Carolina is where they put a camp site and they r not making any improvements near where I live years ago things were good then government but I have been trying to find out information because everything I check on tells me basically what you saying so I bought a camper and going camping at the BLM nothing special did have rest rooms but u got to buy a permit pass then u have to pay for ever day u r there then they put bulletins up at the campsite how much we gotta pay and where we got to go and ask for permission to even Camp there it's not like there a lot of people matter of fact there may be 4 camp sites occupied. I've got older and now I have grand kids and I want to share out doors with them as it was pass down to me and I did with my kids but now sorry to stay this only problems I've really have is with law enforcement game wardens police officers harassing and stealing from me. I know where more BLM land is and they seen me on the road and stop me wanting to know what I am doing and I told them then they told me that I better not get on the posted land and I said I was going to talk to u about that then it got then very angry. I reported them but they would not give me there name but the land is being least out. Game wardens said they cannot do that then I got a visit from the BLM guys and it did not go well. U cannot even get a map from the zone I lived in but I can get one from the other 4 zone. Seems to me I have no where to turn to find out the laws r to report what is really going on. I cannot fish on the late without be harassed several times in one day by game wardens some I sold 3 boats and then the County I live in keeps charging me taxes for the past 3 years and call me a liar when I told them I done have the boats and I reported them being sold when I did sold them. But one of my friends we been riding miles and miles of gravel roads we have discovered the land is BLM but it's posted thousands and thousands of Acres but using our tax dollars to maintain the roads and found a good many with Gates and even two Gates being installed by BLM . It's not farm land this is BLM. But I don't know what higher Authority I need to talk to without them coming to my house making threatening me. I don't have any police records. But it seems I don't have rights to the BLM where I lived then if I camp I got to pay them ever day. Thank u for your reply back so soon. Have a Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.

Jesse Shapiro When there is a government shut down watch how they lock people out of these areas(and access to private land), then you see who really owns it. Government land supporters seem blinded by the general mismanagement of these lands. There is no American or constitutional position to support the amount of government land in the west.

The difference between BLM and NPS as far as hunting, camping, fishing, hiking, etc.... USFS is a division of the Dept. of Agriculture and as such is managed as resource land - timber, grazing and other economic development. _The land managed by the BLM is NOT the same as national park land._ BLM land includes designated lands set aside as 'wilderness preservation areas' and is NOT open to the public. BLM 'manages' but does not control mineral rights (oil, gas, metals, coal, etc.) of subsurface areas that are beneath former homestead locations that the federal government retained rights to upon deed transfer. Subsurface are again, not open to the public.
