The sad part is how much beef you could get for those antelope prices. Jeez. Hunting is going to become a rich man sport in america

I will admit they are fun to hunt! But yeah... It's getting ridiculous

I think hunting will more likely be a resident’s sport meaning you will just hunt the state you live in rather than travel to another state. Most of the states it’s pretty cheap to get a tag for all species.

As you well know from the five years of me mentioning this in many of your videos and even on your HuntTalk forums that my dream 💭 and goal is to hunt pronghorn in every state that I can DIY public land style no matter what weapon type gets me a tag 🏷️ the quickest. I know that is not completely realistic with certain SW states like AZ. But I am still desiring to try in multiple states from South Dakota on West. I actually want to do a Wyoming mule deer 🦌 and pronghorn combo hunt this year after not being able to for one reason or another these past 4-5 years. 2024 HAS to be MY year. 😃 Thanks for sharing this once again after I requested/suggested this a couple years ago. 😎

The winter die-off in the southwest corner of WY into SE Idaho and Northern Utah was worse than the game agencies are letting on. I live in the junction area of those three states, and our on-the-ground observations indicate that 80% or more of the buck deer died late, after shedding their antlers. It will be 5 years recovery for the age class to have any numbers.
@theycallmekevin0310 ай бұрын
I think the idaho period is terrible for deer anymore. 5 years ago you could go to wintering grounds and see a ton of mature bucks. That doesnt exist anymore. You use to be able to (10 years) buy an OTC tag and not even have to put much effort I and kill a 150 inch buck. You might get lucky now but I literally hiked about 100 miles and glassed an insane amount of country in a 12 day period this last year in nice rugged country that has always produced and I didn't see a single buck I would consider quality. Saw 1 single 3 point that was maybe 130 inches. Fish and game doesn't seem to care much about the numbers dropping so bad, as long as they get their money. Honestly I think they should double or triple the out of state costs for a few years.

@@theycallmekevin03 Sadly, they have become overrun with people who are more "preservation" minded, and seek the social outcome over the biological one. Randy does a great job with his productions of having 50% of his content on CONSERVATION, which is biological management of the various species and their habitat, with hunting being available for maintenance of the surplus of game, rather than a tool of appeasement.

Mule deer and pronghorn would be nice combo, but it would have to be all rifle. If you did draw both tags in one state would it be the full cost for each or just the cost of the second tag?

Hi. I’m looking at some mid to long term hunting options. I just graduated college as an engineering student. I’m working on building up my vacation. But while I do that I want to start planning some mid and long term hunts. I am also a tight wad but also a bit of a trophy hunter. What are some of the better areas for me to focus on for mule deer and elk? Is it worth it to focus on an area to get a “premium area”? I need some help/advise haha.
@dsprague362010 ай бұрын
Hi Randy. Can you please elaborate on how you arrived at the Utah deer cost of $806? I see a general hunting license fee of $120, application fee of $15 and deer tag cost of $418.

My only mule deer hunt was in Northern Nebraska and at the time I got my muzzle loader tag on line, I think that has changed. Would you consider it a state to go for? I got a buck and had a great time.

I have heard that mulies have become scarce, and if you do it again, look for whitetails instead. I'm thinking of trying it this year

Really enjoyed this video series. Are there any states that a nonresident could avoid all the long term planning and draws/lotteries and just pay an outfitter/guide and go hunting for elk, mule deer or pronghorn? All of the various states draw systems seems overwhelming. Thanks!

I live in Oregon. It takes 7 or 8 years to pull a good Eastern Oregon buck tag. so I pull a poor eastern Oregon buck tag almost every year but I get a lot more hunts in that way.....
@m444ss10 ай бұрын
this lottery business out west seems horrific. how is it that the west - with a gazillion acres of undeveloped land - has extremely limited hunting opportunities in a system that requires people to pay for a miniscule chance to hunt. I'd love to hunt pronghorn & elk, but glad I live where for $40 I'm allowed to hunt - every year - more deer, bears and gobblers that I can make time for.
@jasonwilkerson72110 ай бұрын
It's all supply and demand. The demand far exceeds the supply, and now the states are looking to maximize revenue as a result. Sad, but I don't see it changing.
@Matt-z4m10 ай бұрын
The convoluted process these states use is to squeeze as much capital as they can from quickly declining resources. The herds on national forest are a fraction of what they were thirty years ago and tags have increased five hundred percent it's just not worth it anymore.

What’s the chances of getting a good Idaho rifle pronghorn hunt I am a resident and what’s the best hunt not looking for a trophy just meat in the freezer
@jmcsflem10 ай бұрын
I’m an Idaho resident and I’ve been putting in for pronghorn for 18 years, (not in one of the harder to draw units) and haven’t drawn. I’ve been putting my 3 kids in for a total of 24 times and no tag. I used to do the unlimited draw for archery since it’s guaranteed draw. But now I can’t put in for both.

@ratstomper949610 ай бұрын
Good stuff. I would change the mule deer ranking some since I am planning an archery hunt, but all helpful information. I started going on a western out of state hunt every year about 10 years ago, buying points in the states I wasn't hunting that year and though the drawing have been getting much more challenging the past few years, the adventures have always been great. Last year we got a couple nice pronghorn in Wyoming and this year we are archery hunting mule deer in Arizona. Hopefully next year will be elk in Colorado.

On Facebook there is a post from BHA(back country hunters and anglers) that they have a mule deer tag for raffle instead of it being auctioned off, supposed to be good for all seasons and units in the state of Montana. Is that a scam? Have you heard about it? Is it the supertag? Looks like Colorado and Wyoming would be my preferences for deer.
