I see this film really differently. Its intercuts between the freedom struggle and modern day corruption show that when the enemy is this external occupying force, change is easier to incite but when it’s hidden in plain sight, when it exists in every structure of governance a fiery passionate youth is going to fail and end up the terrorist or the enemy themselves. Impulsive action is not going to work and we as a society are not ready to put into motion the slow process of change.
@patrickstar670 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely! The tragedy shown was more like a cautionary tale. It prompted you to think and reflect, it was wrong but who is accountable. The parallels between colonial revolution and anti-corruption movement was spot on. A movie where good for nothing college kids can challenge the high powers in the government, albeit in a crazy and self destructive way, is an idea that no one is above the truth. No power is absolute. It levelled the playing field in some way. I just had a rewatch of the movie and I think it still holds. Life is random and chaotic.

I think this movie has done a lot to change the political awareness of its youth in and around the time 2006/7. It was the Anna before the Anna. Sometimes I feel this more real then the Anna movement.

Yeah sure they raided a radio station to make their point felt across to the public, but they never claimed to solve the country's corruption malaise. They were simply starting something, giving the rotting, self-serving system a shake-up so desperately needed. The way they did it wasn't the smartest, but definitely in tune with the rest of the film. It _was_ building up to a climax like that. Who knows, maybe the combination of the grief and blatant callousness surrounding their friend's death in the air-crash and the fact that they had just portrayed freedom-fighters in a film, was just about enough to snap something inside them. Worked for me. And the callers to the radio programme didn't sound fake to me either. P.S. Agree with Sukhi's lack of backstory though. Btw too little mention of Rahman's soundtrack, which I feel is one of his grandest.

Faults can be found from any blockbuster movies after they are seen again after many years.. Rang De Basanti is no exception. People loved the movie when it was released in 2006 and people still love it today also. Instead of appreciating the movie most of the time you were bashing it. The movie was hit due to some reasons. So pls don't bash the movie just for sake of bashing it.

It happens when we watch a movie third or fourth time, our critical thoughts overpower over movie's magic. But I disagree with you. Every present time movie is made seeing the present scenarios, and obviously, the world has changed a lot in the last 16 years, so some of the scenes may look silly in today's context. Although RDB doesn't give reliable solutions to the problems we are facing; but it pushes us to ask questions for sure. Also, the first and foremost duty of a film is to entertain, which it does.

Thanks for doing this, Sucharita. I have watched this film 3 times at different stages of my own maturity, first of which was in a theater when I was 15. Each time I have felt something I didn’t feel before. Such movies, as much as they are a product of their times, are also trailblazers that propel the ‘wheel of time’ you mentioned. Yes, the choices the characters made weren’t the smartest, but it did teach us that being indifferent to things happening around you shouldn’t be an option. That there is a certain amount of virtue in being a rebel and questioning authority. That it’s ok the feel a sense of angst, but it needs to be channeled more constructively than what the characters decided. And the poor choices are what leads to this ending as a tragedy, a cautionary tale. Lovely video, please keep doing more of these!

The taking over the radio station and telling everyone what is good and what is bad, wasnt some kind of quick fix for the movie's ending, and definitely wasn't a final solution for their problems and they totally knew that. That was just what they could do in the last hour. Maybe one of the movies best scene but you guys want to find flaw in everything native,.

Oh shutup!!!! Siddharth's hatred towards his father was shown from the first scene. He blamed his father for his mother's death and he knew the kind of corruption his father was involved and that's the reason he never respected his father. Suki was a feeble character right from the beginning of the movie. All of us have that friend in our friend circle who is always horny and never make sense. It sparks his fear when things go haywire because he is so unsettled. I can go on explaining the character arc of each and every character but it's no point. This movie is still relevant after 16 years, when we hear incidents like lakhimpur or Jamia milia or jnu. What other climax would you have preferred! A happy ending? It was a call for "koi bhi system perfect nhi hota hume banana padhta hai" and it was the most intelligent way to end the movie. My request to you is, please don't sit with an agenda while reviewing movies. Wish you a speedy recovery from covid.

Sucharita says it in the beginning itself. It is a bad idea, a super super bad idea to review a movie that created a strong impact at a very different age and then look at it from today's lens. At the very least, it is a foolish act to make that correlation. At worst, it is poor movie journalism because you did not have the patience to actually take the audience (of this video), back to the age when the movie was made and give the audience an insight on why the movie worked then and what it must be remembered for. When a movie has worked and established itself into the annuls of history, I see no business for a reviewer to pick potholes in it - e.g. "oh but why did these youngsters confuse the play they acted in as reality and went about killing people?". Instead, it would be far more useful to speak of why that correlation between the past (India's freedom struggle) resonated with the youth of India in 2006 who were at the cusp of wanting visible change in India.
