Most commercial LRF's are 905nm, so if you want to check beam size, shape and position, they can be seen in a night vision device like a PVS-14. Most mil-spec systems are 1550nm and not visible in NVG's. 1550nm also allows for much more power while still remaining eyesafe. My Vector 21 for example will range to 13,000 yards and it is still eyesafe. With a small beam of .7x.3 mil I can range an 18x24 inch camo painted steel plate at 2500 yards. Beam shape is also an issue, most commercial units are setup for hunters, where the target animal is generally wider than it is tall, so the beam is wide in normal handheld position. If you are shooting targets taller than the are wide, you can turn the unit sideways to get more beam on the target and get a more reliable return.

I got a tip from a recon sniper here in sweden. They use the Leica crf 2400r. Works great without breaking the bank. Mine gets out to 1700m (1800-ish yrd) on spruce. Good enough for me.

The new Bushnell R5 series should get an honorable mention on your entry level range finder list. It has Applied Ballistics integrated and its $250 I am sure it has all the same shortfalls as similar cheap range finders, but its worth a look.

I appreciate your videos, I train as I fight and I always heard, “train as we fight” and “if it ain’t rainin’ we ain’t trainin”. I’ve had some struggles after service, since I don’t pt everyday with cardio I have put on extra pounds, its muscle but good strong cardio is needed to carry them heavy ass muscles too. Stay frosty my friend and head on a swivel. Good stuff though keep on keepin on with it hooah!

Similar experience with the Vortex low end as I've gotten with mine out at longer ranges. Anything beyond about 600 and they fall on their face, regardless of reflectivity.

I’ve ranged to over 2000yds plenty of times with my Vortex Viper HD 3000, I confirmed it with GPS and it’s accurate. Awesome videos by the way!

Nope not about the laser power. It's about the sophistication and sensitivity of the sensor that receives the reflection. That's what you're paying for and what increases performance.

That target you’re ranging at 835-841 yards is only 636ish yards. On range cheat sheet it’s the “Bronco” target. Denver Broncos colors.

The Leupold laser seems like it's a horizontal line, not a circle. Ex: 2 moa tall and 8 moa wide(completely arbitrary numbers and units, but you get the point)

The first mode is great on a target like that 834.1 target, it will range the closest target(first one it hits). I.e. a target in front of the the hill

I have to add that i bought Leica HD-B 10x50's rangefinding binos in 2016 and have never looked back. Used sig, used swaro, used nikon, none of them come remotely close to the pinpoint accuracy that i get with the Leica. I wish Leica was cheaper to buy but they just arent. Im not a brand loyalist - show me one better for less and thats what ill buy.

I have the Leupold RX-2800 as well, and have had zero issues since I got it in 2018 or 2019, but it also still looks pretty much like new. LOL I will be upgrading to the BX-4 Range HD very soon. Would you be interested in checking it out? I live in Helena and shoot quite a bit in the North Hills. I would be interested in your input....

The only binos that were in my price range were the vortex fury or athlon chronos. My issue was that i watched videos of people struggling to range things at around 2k yards which for the money seemed ridiculous to me. So i went with the leupold rx2800 as a more affordable option until i can save up for more capable and reliable rf binos like the kilo10k. Maybe by then the tech will be better and more affordable.
