I had exactly the same, mine was just newer than recall and Land Rover were having non of it. I even went to the DVSA here in the UK to highlight the danger, they too not interested. Zero concern from Land Rover on this one, glad your highlighting.

In Australia a few years ago I had one of Australia's biggest selling cars. The a/c hose leaked out all the gas right on warranty expiry (on time, the car was low klms). The dealer said they had never seen that issue before however the internet was full of discussion on the exact issue. Even a mate who worked at a dealer said it's a common problem. Never trust what the dealer says 😞

There are a lot of them around, and by all accounts it will surely provide you with endless video footage for this channel, especially if you get a car where it's mounted transversely, because that appears to be related to all sorts of grief related to emissions reduction systems.

Buy the Jag, it’s good to get challenged from time to time. Re: Metal fatigue. Many years ago, I worked for Hawker Siddley in Hatfield UK. My office window overlooked the water tank they used to test the hulls of the doomed Comet aircraft before they knew about metal fatigue. The windows of the plane were square shaped, the cracks happened in the corners.

Not sure it was so much the shape of the windows (although Boeing changed the early 707 designs to oval windows from square). It was the riveting processes that started the cracks on metal that was too thin for the pressures being applied and disapplied.

@@johnmoruzzi7236 Sorry that was not what the official report found after they created the world first submerged pressure test. A synopsis of the tests revealed: * G-ALYU was placed inside the tank * All internal cabin fixtures were removed and replaced with weights * ‘YU’ had already completed 1121 Passenger flights * ‘YU’ had completed 10 pressurised flights with de Havilland plus other tests * A further 1826 simulated cycles were completed before fatigue failure of the pressure cabin from a crack growing from a rivet hole at the forward port escape hatch One conclusion was the rivet holes were punched not drilled and this led to fatigue cracks. An early Comet 2 was also put under the same testing (it had rounded windows) and the failures were in riveting not the windows.

Oh wow. Good for you for taking this to the Department of Transport. I must say that doesn't look like a big or strong enough knuckle for a 2.5 tonne 4x4. My fiancée's Prius barely weighs half that and has two M14 pinch bolts torqued to 153Nm holding the knuckle to the strut! I know the geometry of a Macpherson strut results in different loadings, but it's still a useful illustration.

In Germany, when you have a highly efficient functional vehicle lift, when working on suspension you just raise the vehicle 0.5M so you still have to get down onto your knees. Maybe it saves on electricity?

Mine hadn't failed but were changed by LR as a precaution. That's the good news. The bad news was Taunton Land Rover involved 3 visits to get it done. 1) Booked appointment, brought car in, parts aren't in stock. Pick car up. 2) Booked second appointment 6 month later once the parts were in. Leave car for whole day, workshop was too busy, asked to collect car & re book. 3) Booked third appointment 2 months later and finally got it sorted out. Love my Range Rover, thanks to LR time I can DIY and avoid the dealers.

Great video. Shows how things were made wrong as you pointed out Christian. Land Rover need to deal with this. It is the bolt no doubt which is causing the issue. As you said it has no doubt been overtightened. It could have been made differently to save this issue. I as I have said previously do not own a Land Rover product but love the way you both look at the issues and address them. Very entertaining but covering issues which manufacturers do not think about properly when they make them. That was particularly the case with the recent engine rebuild you carried out.

The Jaguar would be a fantastic project car. I did the timing chains, tensioners and guides along with a cooling system refresh and a supercharger rebuild on my 5.0 L322 last year. It's a great engine which makes fantastic power and is great on fuel economy. I absolutely think Christian should go and buy that Jaguar! Can't wait to see content on it!

Driving on the left hand side of the road is a direct result of being conquered by Napoleon Bonaparte. He was left handed. Being so meant that cavalry were forced to pass the opposition with the sword hand (in this case his left) nearest to his foe. Such was his arrogance, he insisted that all his soldiers used their left hand to fight. Blame the French, but for the correct reason.

Its a crap design (having the split/clamp) and the 'wrong' material. My Cayenne 955 has similar long travel double McPherson strut suspension but the knuckle is grey cast iron and the top ball joint is a taper/doesn't have a split. The material choice of aluminium will improve ride quality (sprung Vs unsprung weight) and weight saving fuel economy but comes at the cost of potential catastrophic failure!

Well done Christian, take it to JLR. The designer of the L405 was Gerry McGovern, blame him. The fault would have been picked up on the R&D testing, so shame on you JLR.

Yes I do, I have worked in RnD departments on prototypes, let’s face it cheap and poorly designed parts have been used and should have picked up on the pre-production vehicles that have in most cases traveled 1 millions miles plus.

Drainage grills are usually not flush with the road. If it's the same in Germany that may be the reason for more failures on the passenger side.

Another wonderfully funny and informative video. I think I will eventually upgrade from my current L320 to an L405, hopefully by then I'll remember to check if this recall has been done as I'm in the UK but for the moment I've still got a lot of miles to put on my Bianca, she's only done 99,500ish. ❤

Driving on the left side of the road is natural especially when going around a roundabout as nowhere in the world do you see a clock going backwards unless it’s f….ked. I hope you get the XJL and discover the little knock is just the pathetic drive gear on the supercharger. Excellent content. Was that one click or two 🤔🤪😂

What you found is really alarming! The mechanical design of this part is bad - it is a predetermined breaking point by design! This design could only work with forged steel but not with aluminum. Be very glad that you found it. Thanks for this great video!

It never ceases to amaze me how car companies try to bury their heads in the sand about issues with their products (especially JLR - issues with the Ingenium diesel timing chains ignored). You can see the influence of bean counters when they identify an issue in 1 country but fail to see these things are likely in all countries.
