Garage / workshop I use had one of these boat anchor engines. They didn't bother with it. A low mileage Ford 1.8 Endura turbo diesel with gearbox adapter which they had machined to fit was fitted in its place.

This engine is actually not a bad engine. Only two things really go horribly wrong. Like you’ve seen the crank is a massive weak point and the injectors doing what we’ve just seen. I build these things everyday. The company I work for specialise in them it’s all we do so if you’d like a rebuilt engine let me know we have them built instock sitting on the shelf

So what’s the key to stop them snapping the crack, I have a 2010 and I’m just waiting for it to happen! I let it warm up and drive it steady with plenty of servicing, I’m hoping that will give me a reliable engine... it is really piss poor, you say the engine isn’t that bad yet there’s plenty of owners out there who will disagree...it’s quite a common problem which should never happen in a vehicle of today!

@@PillSharks as far as engines go it is actually really good. The main issue is the crank. I know this is a massive issue but when you look at other engines that have multiple issues not just the one. The best way to avoid the crank snapping is not to load the engine. So not pulling off from a stand still hard and fast but rather slow and steady. The other main reason for them going is towing massive loads. Stupid I know cause landrovers are ment to tow but the strain it puts your engine through with pulling off and accelerating with weight behind it puts all engines through a massive amount of strain. Regular oil changes and services has no effect on the cranks life span at all ( unless u only change the oil once in a blue moon and end up blocking the oil galleries). The number 1 rule is if you suspect the crank has gone or the car just won’t run or run right do not keep trying to start it or run it at all. If you damage the mains housings in the block it’s a very expensive fix if you can find an engineering machine shop that is willing to line bore the block. Or the block could be scrap where the broken crank will push the front main housing out of alignment completely. I hope this has helped you and you understand a bit better. I’ve tried to be as clear as possible. The other point to make is the 2.7L is more likely to snap a crank than a 3.0L simply because the crank in the 3.0L they made out of a different material but due to the design of the crank the weak point remains the same.
@Draxindustries13 жыл бұрын
@@steveorom This is nothing more than a boat anchor of an engine. If a diesel in a 4x4 can't stand a bit of abuse without the crank snapping it's totally useless. All well and good rebuilding them but without a brand new forged crank of a new design is fitted (which are not available) the engine will just shit itself over again..

Buy cheap, buy twice! Good effort and video on your part anyway Steve. Perhaps the customer should consider buying a known, good, running engine from a low mileage Disco 4/RRS insurance write off. Putting a crank into a block which has previously snapped a crank is asking for trouble. I would also get all six injectors sent off for testing and replace any ones that are out of spec. Any imbalances in these 306DT engines significantly increases the risk of it happening again.
@likhwadube59374 жыл бұрын
Kevin Watkins Have you seen the prices of these engines? A low mileage one would be too expensive, It would be cheaper to buy a new car than do that. I’ve put cranks in before with no problems as long as the block is good.
@paulhancock38443 жыл бұрын
They don't snap crankshafts because of injector imbalance
@Draxindustries13 жыл бұрын
@@paulhancock3844 They do. One cylinder putting out more power than another puts enormous stress on an already weak part of this crap engine..
@paulhancock38443 жыл бұрын
@@Draxindustries1 bollix honesty, why don't all diesel engines do it then? Modern diesels well even my 20 year old land rover td5 measure the pulse given by each cylinder on the crank and change injector duration to balance them up, if they are out of range the ecu throws up a check engine light and the engine goes into limp home mode. There is no way this can damage the crank
@Draxindustries13 жыл бұрын
@@paulhancock3844 It does affect this engine though is its a very weak design, it takes very little to snap the crank. I don't understand anyone wanting to refit with another. Either retrofit with something strong and reliable or just scrap the car and move on from LR..

I have a 2007 discovery 3 tdv6. When the first right piston was on top centre the left camshaft pully don't lock in place. I have to force back to lock it. When i do that the valve knock on piston. Because the valve is open off course. The left valve is slight off also. The camshaft looking good but Do you think the camshaft is twisted. This is possible.

The engine doesn't time at tdc. It times in a safe position so no valves will touch the pistons when the cams are turned. Seems to me that you have the crank in the wrong place.
