Range Rover transmission fault, stop engine

Range Rover uses a auxiliary battery to back up the electronic systems, as this battery ages it doesn't hold a full charge. When this happens you get a warning on the dash that says "Transmission fault, put into park and turn off engine" this could cost up to $600. at the dealer to have it repaired. This is how to fix it for as little as $15 depending on where you get the replacement battery. About $130 for an OEM battery at the dealership. If you let the car run for several minutes it will charge the battery up and the fault will go away until the car sits long enough to discharge and create the fault again.

Thank you brother! I had changed the cabin air filter which is located around the same place, and when pulling it out it disconnected one of the terminals, started giving me the "transmission fail warning" and I freaked out, but found the solution here. Took me 45 seconds to get the battery out, reconnect the loose cable and back in, and problem solved! no more transmission fail light and no huge dealer charge!

Thanks a lot Dave! The failure started with the same warning as you show, started after the coupé filter has been removed and changed. I checked it as you show… very good, the failure was caused by the yellow cable wich became accidentaly disconected. Now works right again. Best Regards from Sweden. 🙏👍🏽

Models with auto start stop feature have a bigger aux battery instead. It is under the bonnet behind the windsheald wiper cover.

I have done the same myself , here they are pretty standard house alarm batteries £12 to £15 they fit without any problem and are the same as Rover use ,but without the premium charged.

Power sonic is who makes the battery for range rover and it was around $25-30 model PS-1212. I searched the internet/amazon for a 12 volt, 1.2 amp hr battery, and then checked the measurements for one that would fit. $13-20 for the same from different vendors. They were almost the exact size and 1.3-1.4 amp hr which will work fine. The OEM battery measures 97mm x 43mm x 52mm plus the terminals. Same size or slightly smaller is ok not larger or it won't fit into the compartment. In the short term, start the car and let it run for a short time until the car recharges the aux. battery and that should eliminate the fault message for the trip/day.

good morning , we have the 61 plate 2012 model and we have the stop start funtion , changed main battery as was the wrong battery inside , we have got the eco to work now but still getting all the errors , i have taken out the haldex pump and cleaned it , tried to reset all codes but instantly come back we dont have the battery either behind glove box or at side of the main battery is there anything else i am missing Thanks

Thanks for this information, I have a 2014 evoque, when it travels a longer distance continuous like 100kms it stops pulling, then on the dashboard it indicates restricted performance. Then you you need to park for hours for it to starting moving again. What can be the problem? Please helo

Hi Dave S. could you possibly give me the name of the Dealership you purchased your battery from. Their phone number if possible, the prices here in my state is stating 350.00. I would pay the price for the battery and install myself. My vehicle is giving the same message and would go off after a short time but now it just stays on. Had the car battery checked other day, that battery is only a year old and is working properly. Dealer didn’t mention auxiliary battery at all, didn’t know it had one. yes it will still work, you may need to make an adjustment with a plyers or screw driver to make it fit securely or use a soldering iron to remove the old one and put it onto the new battery

Hi! Thank you but apparently this battery is not on the 2015 Range Rover Evoque. The dealer told me it needed all new tires and that was the problem. It still did the same thing. I took it to another mechanic who works on Range Rovers and he found the problem. It was the 2 front tire sensors. So he had to change them out. $500 job that the dealer would have charged 2-3k!

How do you know if it's your Transmission vs just the battery? The dealer tried to sale me some gear box for $6,400.

If you let the car run for 10-15 min it should charge the battery enough to eliminate the message after you restart the car. if that works it is a battery problem and this test should work if the battery is getting weak. If it is totally dead you need to try a new battery. A new battery at the dealer is over $100, on line much less as I explained in the video and a battery is less than $6,400

In one of your replies you say that it will eliminate the fault for the day and in the description you mention that if you let the car sit long enough it will fault again so is this not a permanent fix for the error code?

When the car sits for several days the battery discharges enough to create a low battery that causes the fault message. In my case starting the car and letting it run for a while would charge the battery enough to eliminate the fault until the car sat not running again for several days allowing the battery to discharge enough to recreate the fault once again. the weaker the condition that the battery is in, the faster it will go into fault

I don't think so. As long as the original terminals fit securely on the battery terminals you should be ok. you may need to squeeze them a little to make them tight

Why does the ignition is fault come up?

The battery is not holding a full charge and needs to be replaced. The car does a system check on startup and the low battery triggers the fault. If you let the car run for a while it will charge the battery enough to clear the fault after a restart and another system check unless the battery is totally shot.
