Yes it's called a turbo decoder lock pick that I think you're talking about extremely quick and high position tool goes hand in hand with the OBD JLR programmer and if you buy the cable that comes with the programmer you can program a key from outside the car even if it is alarmed and locked so you won't have to buy lock pick

Until around the late 80's early 90's Fords could be opened and started with the bone handle from and old fashioned dinner knife removed, and the tang used as a key. Car security always has been largely an illusion. Cars are designed to be moved.

As a RR owner I was disappointed to see my insurance more than doubled this year when shopping around, my current insurer then added another 50% on top due to a no fault accident where someone hit my car in a car park - luckily the dashcam caught them and I pursued them outside my insurance to try and avoid being penalised - but it was registered against my car so it got me in the end. My point here is if someone is going to try and take my car - yes it's just a car and it can be replaced, but you are going to lose your excess which is likely £500 - £1000 and B your premium will go up - so there is a very real incentive to stop a thief taking it. With regard to preventing the theft of any car (keyless or not), if you block the market for it the supply will reduce because there is nowhere to dispose of the cars and this would have an almost instant effect (few weeks). If you then legislate than no cars can be exported unless inspected and recorded; yes there would be an initial chaotic situation, but after a few months the situation will become normal with an understood delay of 2 or 3 weeks. Block people being able to load cars from yards within ports and you start to win the battle. You could set up trusted yards across the country where cars can be loaded in to containers to spread the load. This will create jobs funded by the costs to export cars and I'm sure the insurance companies would be happy to contribute to the setting up. This all seems so obvious yet there is little appetite to get it started.
@neutralcorner5950
@neutralcorner5950 10 ай бұрын
Good fair points! See a little on the ports thing. Is it possibly the case that these cars are going in containers that are not registered for cars at all. Registered for completely different contents. Is there also some sort of rules on restricting trade at ports. Like it’s difficult for authorities to search a lot as that then breaches these rules? I could be wrong but think I read this somewhere.

Add as many visual deterrents as possible, steering locks etc, pedal locks, store keys in secure pouches, use an old coffee tin to store the pouches, away from the front door, windows, make sure when you lock your car, it locks, check it, especially when in car parks, Bottom line, if they want it, they will take it, but they need to get it quickly, and anything that slows them down will deter them, and they will find another one that is easier to take.

It’s a manufacturer issue, insurance issue and Police issue. Manufacturers don’t really care, stolen product will get replaced by another so getting two sales, insurance, they just put up the premium for that customer for 5 years and also up the premiums for everyone a little, Police used to take car thefts more seriously, now they just see it as a insurance claim. Note it for stats and that’s it. In my town a few years ago if any cars stolen Police would put appeals out via social media etc and actually try and find the car. Now they don’t even bother putting any appeals out and certainly put zero effort into solving the crime.

It's as simple as pulling the fuel pump fuse to stop your car being stolen. No thief is going to piss around with a car that won't start. This whole security system is a joke to thieves, they live for this it just a game to them.

The problem is simple, keyless entry / engine start is not secure⚠️ The answer is very straight forward, revert to a physical key with a chip in the fob. Both key and chip are needed to open and start the car. How can we get to 2023, with all the advanced technical, electronics and computers built into cars currently and have high value cars that are easier to start and steal than most 1970s fords were back in the day! I remember my dad showing me his ford escort key could open other fords, I didn't believe him until he showed me on a carpark his key open another ford. I personally would not have a car with keyless entry system!

I had two L322 models and on those there is a way to "hide" the ECU for the keyless entry. Even if you get access to the cars CAN network, you can't see the ECU, i.e. you can't access it. I bought the unit from Black Box Solutions (where I also bought my fully functional diagnostic computer, for fault finding, updating etc.). This might be the type of solution that stops this method of accessing the car and starting and driving it.

Take security into your own hands. I have an expensive camper van that would be a target but i have not left it to the car's own immobiliser and deadlocks to keep it from being stolen. Security layers, is the best way to proceed, to reduce the chances, markedly of your vehicle being stolen. It is a hassle to use these devices but it is a much greater hassle, the vehicle being stolen. On my van, i use :- A full diameter steering wheel metal cover lock. A clutch lock. A tracker. An under the facia bear lock, locking the gears in reverse. A driveway alarm, with a p.i.r. pointing at the driver's seat communicating with an alarmed receiver, placed next to me in the living room or moved next to my bed at night. A faraday pouch for the keys. Keys taken to bed with me and not left downstairs at night or near the front or back or patio doors ever. Full CCTV coverage of the whole house and drive. And lastly a large sporting, manual instructional instrument.

I’ve had well over thirty cars in the last twenty years. The oldest one was a 1983 SL Mercedes, the newest one was a 2013 E-Class estate. Not a single one was stolen. I wouldn’t touch anything older or newer than that. Cars stopped improving fifteen years ago or so. There is absolutely nothing that would make me want a newer car. When a vehicle that costs as much as a house in some parts of the UK can be stolen with a Bluetooth speaker, you know that it’s all coming down very soon. I think - in the final analysis - if they want your car they'll probably get it. Especially if they are willing to resort to burglary or robbery with violence to get the keys. Possibly the RR is just a particularly profitable car to target right now. It's relatively easy to steal, but if the thieves are willing to go the extra step to get the keys for anything else, that's a little academic.

When data is sent on a normal network via TCP, it is often encrypted with SSL. HTTPS with other words. In the end they will have to add encryption to the network in the car. Every ECU should be configured with a certificate that differs between cars. The certificate only available from the manufacturer after proving ownership of the car, or on a USB drive when you buy the car. Only data used for diagnostics should be unencrypted.

Having the key continuously transmitting is madness! I've thought for a while that keys could be programmed for fingerprint recognition - like old iPhones, so that the car owner has to 1) press the key to transmit the signal and 2) the key doesn't transmit if the fingerprint doesn't match... surely this would improve security?
@schrodingerscat1863

No the key is constantly listening for the car. The car transmits and the key receives that signal and then transmits the entry code. @@matthewspry4217 There is some reasonably high end cryptography involved which is why cloning a key is near impossible but using a signal boosting relay is a very easy way to make the key and the car think they are right next to each other. While there is no encryption and authentication on the CANbus cars will be susceptible to injection of nefarious messages by one means or another. It is impossible to protect the whole of the CANbus itself. Authentication at the key is insufficient - that is at the edge of the network - the modules themselves have to embed security at the data transport and application layers (at least between critical functions). Basic comms security in open networks.

I wonder if an easily removeable module with a unique encryption code would be a possible answer. The encryption code would be needed to activate any part of the car's electronic systems and attempts to defeat it would wipe the software or destroy part of the chippery. Back in the days when my cars had no electronics I used to remove the rotor arm from the distributor when parking overnight. For short term parking I put a switch in the low voltage side of the coil and stuffed it into the cable loom under the dashboard. If anyone attempted to hot wire the car the engine would turn over but would never start.

@@NerdInMotion23 That's what they are supposed to do but they don't do it because the "password" can be remotely cloned. Good security requires at least 2 of these 3 factors: something you have (fob) something you are (e.g fingerprint) or something you know (e.g. PIN) These are used to produce a pseudo random, time dependent code to unlock the car's system.

Theres a physical plate for sale that blocks that access and can only be accessed by removing more bodywork. Also the other big speight of thefts are BMW Steering wheels - Worth watching some videos to see how steering locks dont help :( But also a company has been able to modify the ECU so you can't just drive away without pressing a sequence of buttons. I would happily forsake the lazy convenience of keyless entry for entering a pin or pressing a sequence of buttons.

The insurance has tripled due to me living in a major city and the insurance companies don't care what you've got fitted. I hear thief's are paid 2k for each range rover or other prestige car they steal and some get quite a few in one night. Police officers say they like to operate between 3.30am to 4.00am that was always the time period my alarm use to go off the first six months of ownership.
