There is an alternative to the solar compass. We all have button compasses and other small cheapies that died from bubbles. Carefully crack the case, and remove the disk. That can be slipped into your wallet and floated on a palm full of of water. A small button compass, you can float it in a bottle cap! Just remember to double check that it is accurate, because sometimes it is more than the bubble.

The Estwing hatchet is one of the most underrated pieces of gear in the survival/bushcraft world. It's all a matter of getting a proper edge on it (which it does NOT come with) and it'll do anything those $200+ boutique hatchets will do (I know because I stupidly bought them, and then found out the only difference is they came with a proper edge), and you have a nigh indestructible tool. Tip for those old bags: the snaps won't line up, but you can put them in a modern Gore-Tex bivy sack, and close the sack separately from the bag to help the water resistance

Yeah, GideonsTactical did a comparison between the Estwing and much more expensive hatchet. $35 vs $135 in the title of that video. He was shocked at how well the Estwing did. He did sharpen his. I remember leaving a comment there basically saying how pathetic it was for the expensive axe company to charge so much just for a sharpen on the axe edge. I prefer the full tang strength of the Estwing anyway, even if it had a slightly inferior edge (imagining it did).

I honestly hope not I'm not a supporter of a company built off a lier of one's military background . I hated to see Kelly and GBGB go to work for someone like that but guess the money outshines the dishonor . I remember Dave when all he had was a Utube channel then he lied to land a spot on Dual Survival and he honestly didn't know much about friction fires Cody had to show him lol. Anyways I have my reasons to be a non supporter of the guy. Andrew has a great potential to start his own School without the need to piggyback off pathfinder school and unrealistically I don't see how getting some patches from his school makes for a survival trainer all these skills can be learned by oneself just need to practice .

I was here before the Corporal recommended it. I totally agree that the Major has no need to work for someone else, unless he just doesn't want to be saddled with the "business" and other "admin" aspects of it. But I'd love to see the Major open his own school ! I'm a veteran and not a fan of stolen valor. What I have of that I EARNED, and didn't have to fudge.

@@treerat6959 I agree that what Dave did was pretty shameful. But I’ll say this, no one is free from error. The thing that separates us the most is how we act and react when we make mistakes and how we attempt to redeem ourselves. Making a public apology was a good start and to be honest I feel like most people wouldn’t have had the guts to do that. Since that, he has moved on and provided a great outlet for military veterans such as Kelly and GBGB to continue earning a living do something they love. Dave’s content on Dual survival was mostly just entertainment, it was on cable tv after all. But Dave, among the others associated with the Pathfinder School, have continued to put out a high standard of content within the topic of survival. But hey, just my opinion. I appreciate yours as well

A pruning saw and a hatchet are all most people need in the spruce-timbered subarctic to build a snug palisade as a foundation for a canvas tent with a flue hole for a sheet metal stove like those many of the the old-timers carried in their dogsleds. One of the toughest places to get a cook fire going that I have been in was Yellowstone Park with some of the tough park firewood that was available. A place you can really use a splitting maul and some splitting wedges! I used a 26-inch handled Estwing camp axe in the Yukon -60 F deep cold and it never shattered on me, thanks be.

An Estwing hatchet.I rebuilt one once. It's a story. Well, that was interesting. I've done map reading, but haven't seen that technique. The thing is, it seems like most of these shelters are teddy bears to keep you secure at night. Sharpening a blade: you can spend an hr. on that. Water. That's the thing. All this other stuff is aside. If you are out of water, start thinking.

Where the lid and the bottom of the soap container come together, use electrical or duct tape wrapped around the perimeter to seal the container thereby waterproofing it with tape that can have a multitude of survival uses later. If you use bright orange duct tape, it can be used for signaling, trail marking, fishing lure crafting , wrapping easily lost items, etc. Electricians tape will also waterproof the container and can be used to effect electrical repairs, wrapped around fingers to work with electrical items, use as a firestarter like duct tape and etc. Duct tape will do field expedient repairs on boats, inflatable mattresses, inner tubes and so on ! You can make improvised drinking cups from duct tape. Duct tape is all around great to have with a first aid kit container. It is the Swiss Army knife of tapes. It can provide extra grippage on knife and ax handles or hatchet handles and machetes. There is so much that it can do that I keep a flat ŕoll with me in my packs and vests, etc. Well thank you so much for sharing your Ranger knowledge with this Marine and all the other folks. I can see that you are going to be a wonderful asset to the survival, prepping and bushcraft community. Keep up the good work Soldier ! I did see the shout-out, but I was following you long before that, you both give very good information, I like the fact you dive into the military stealth as well.

Thank you for today's episode. couldn't be any happier finding your channel!Love Estwing! I live right around the block from the manufacturer. I'd be out by the fire at night hearing the hard working Americans make some great quality tools. Take care Andrew 🦅🇺🇸

Love your videos. Wish I would have learned these skills in the Army. I was in in the 80s and was in an MI unit. Didn’t get this training.

I apprecaite the hatchet sharpening hip pocket class. I am horrible at sharpening and I have become very self-conscious about it.
