In this video I ramble for like 20 minutes about what's still wrong with Competitive Mode in TF2 as well as why 6v6 should remain the only format as opposed to Highlander. I also bash on the current 6v6 meta for being too favored towards generalist classes (it's all 5CP's fault).
In other words, I probably piss off a few of the more hardcore sections of the competitive community. I was almost scared of getting beat up, until I remembered that they make up about 4% of everyone in the world who plays TF2. Sad but true. But hey, maybe that will change in a few years when the TF Team finally sorts this stuff out.

Great video as always Dane. At this point we can only hope Matchmaking gets an overhaul. Until it becomes less toxic for anyone above rank 10, faceit is always a good option I've recently given a try. Highlander would indeed be a mess. I get my fill of it from stuff like tf2center. Highlander is fun but we definitely can't expect for it to be successful if 6s is barely functional. We can only hope. I'm at nearly 1K matchmaking matches and overhauling it would resurrect some of my interest in the game.

investing yourself in hope is a lost cause really, the next matchmaking update will be an infected band aid at best. i'd rather have all the mechanics from competitive mode implemented into casual, is just absurd to think that all your 2k hours of casual and community servers suddenly mean nothing into competitive, Valve's competitive at that because the community has made a pretty good job at that also is ironic how for a team of developers lazy enough to keep grabbing cosmetics and taunts from the community, they couldn't adopt rules that the community itself has developed over the years for a more proper competitive experience. i guess they want to re-invent the wheel, once more, only end up doing what they should have done at the start, and hear me on this, it won't happen tomorrow, or next month, it will take them a whole year before even touching or poaching competitive mode the way it's meant to be developed

I just wish they fix their bots. Make them expert mode bots, or making them stop taunting, or even make them stop switching class every three seconds.

Yeah. I was really into it when it came out, but after countless cases of "one player quit from the other team at the last minute of the match" I lost all hope for it. I didn't mind if my team didn't know what they should do and we were losing, even that gives you exp. But when you play a map for an hour and get nothing from it, it's really not worth it.

Ghostiification this particular issue is way less common nowadays. The ragequiters either realised that quiting loses more xp and stopped doing that, or were too mad and left.

I'm surprised you (and a fair amount of TF2 you tubers) haven't taken a break from the game. Not quitting, just taking a break. I did it and I'm super happy I did. I came back recently and the nostalgia and fun and just different gameplay reminded me why I love this game (also I spent a hundred dollars so I kind of have to keep playing it). I'm just super proud of you guys and happy for keeping me interested.

I've not played since 23.12.16.. I used to play atleast every other day (mostly just every day for 2-3 hours) for maybe four years, but then I got a bit bored. I don't think I've quit the game totally, I'm just having a break. Though I don't know how long break I'm going to have. Been playing bad company 2 online and atm that is exactly what I need and want (though some times when using rpg I wish I could just rocket jump across the map :D). I have two tickets for mvm and a backpack networth of +200€ waiting for me when I get back to it, but I have no rush.

That sounds horrible. Finding a good match in Causal is rare too. Sometimes you get lucky and find a good team. And other times you just find script kiddies and friendlies.

Son of Tiamat I've played tons of casual matches and to be fair, once your a godlike sniper or soldier you can legit carry your entire team easily. One time I dropped 100+ kills on payload lol

Sometimes, yes. I've carried whole teams myself. But it's not something I can do consistently, nor do I want to always have to be the one carrying. I like helping competent team mates and being help by them.

14:00 Don't agree with this at all. A weapon that's not dangerous when used by a professional against professionals can absolutely be dangerous when used by a casual against casuals. The canonical example is any weapon or tactic that is "easy to use but hard to counter": High level players all meet the skill threshold to counter the tactic so it doesn't impact high level play, but low level players die to it in droves even when it is used by other low level players. This leads to pubs turning into an environment where everyone uses the weapon or tactic which prevents people from actually becoming better and progressing to high level play, or prevents them from enjoying low level play if they only play casually. What I would say is that high level play being balanced is NECESSARY for overall game balance to be achieved, but not SUFFICIENT.

I think you bring up a ton of excellent points, particularly around changing your perspective on why the team format needs to be 6v6 and why Highlander is going to be impractical for matchmaking.

I used to be pro-highlander for Valve's competitive mode, but hearing your thoughts actually made me change my mind and I fully understand your reasons. It kind of makes me excited to see what Valve's comp mode will actually matures into. So thanks for this video 😁

I find that 5 cp is pretty fun in competitive, but I do wish there were more koth maps. Still very competitive and those were the maps I generally had the most fun on. koth maps are what competitive needs. Also, a refined match finding system should be implemented since TF2 doesn't have a player base as large as cs:go, the elo system fails to be effective because the high rank players are spread so thin over a much smaller community. With the declining player base TF2 is suffering from right now, I am lead to believe that the competitive mode will fail regardless, not because it's bad, but because TF2 cannot support such a large rank system for a much smaller community.

In reply towards 1 limit not working or other limits not working because people could grief by not switching; They could add a voting system (similar to kicking a player and so-on) where if you attempt to join a class which someone else is currently playing, it throws out a vote to your team on if you should swap, as well as a secondary vote sent to the owner of that class if they want to switch, which if accepted would over-rule the team vote. The vote would appear in a format to not block too much of the screen or cause a distraction so people cannot abuse the vote its self to distract the entire team. Then they should also add a voting system that allows you to kick people IF they haven't killed an enemy player within a set period of time, preventing people from just sitting in spawn and not playing the required class. (Same would apply to Medic but instead counting towards assists and healing of teammates in the set period of time).

I basically say this everytime I see a video discussing 5cp, but I think the best solution for competitive tf2 would be a game mode similar to siege, the primary mode in paladins. Basically, it starts out as a KOTH map (with both teams having separate progress bars which only fill when the point is uncontested as opposed to tf2's single bar that has to be drained of one teams cap time before the other can cap), but once one team caps the point, a payload spawns for the winning team to push. They then have about 1-3 minutes to push the payload a set distance with no checkpoints. Capping the point is worth 1 point, Successful payload push is worth 1 point, Successful payload defense is worth 1 point, And there is a full map reset after each payload attempt dividing the game into multiple rounds. First team to 4 points wins, and you can't win from a successful payload defense (i.e. you have to win on a payload push, or a successful point cap). What this winds up doing is ensuring that both teams have one all important objective that they both *HAVE* to play around, and gives a short but reasonable time frame in which they must act together in order to win. For as much as it's a hip, and cool, and edgy for people to shit on paladins without actually playing it, it's actually a really good game with a phenomenal game mode that both tf2 and overwatch have overlooked, and I think it's time that the tf2 starts to look to the games that it inspired for some inspiration of its own.

comment guy The map did have glitches. There were several parts that made bomb stuck in several places along with an OP skybox glitch people could have use. Luckily the CSGO team is a large enough to patch those things in 2 days.

There shouldn't be class limits at all, sure its "unfun" to play against more than 1 heavy for SOME people but that doesn't make it a good strategy. If you are playing to win more than 1 of most classes your team will suffer Good players will know not to stack all the same class and thus will climb the rankings easier. Competitive isn't about having fun it's about winning and if you have fun in the process good for you, just the fact that its competitive is fun to the people who want to play competitive in the first place.

They could start bridging the two comunity's by adding stopwatch mode as an option for casual, perhaps expand on it by adding stopwatch mode for koth(Both attack the point, but once capped, you'll have to holdit for unlimited time. After it's capped again, the round ends and the other team is in control of the point, for as long as you held the point.) and teretorial control(opening up all the stages at once, and keeping score of how much points each team has captured)

I personally think Highlander is a better option due to the fact that every class is available increasing the amount of people who want to play and with each person having less impact your team won't instantly lose when your solider can't aim. like you said it is also closer to pubs bridging the gap.

I recently tried to get into a comp match. Took me 5 minutes to get into a server, took about 7 for enough people to connect to it. 2 seconds before the last guy connected the people who were there from the beginning started disconnecting. Never got to play. Went back to casual.

Idk why, but it triggers me watching comp players whine about stuff being OP. Deep down I know most of the stuff you talked about are annoyingly good, but I just feel like if balance crazies had their way, the game would be a bland, flat plane with no diversity in pursuit of balance. But that's probably cause I play a lot of WoT where WarGaming's version of 'Balance' is making everything identical.

So from what I understand it's 1# make it nine players so that everything balances out (class limit above 1, so like 2 maybe, so it's not strictly highlander) 2#Rebalance all the weapons and maps for 6v6 (doesn't necessarily mean for casual as well). the game was originally made for large teams, and that is the biggest issue with comp in my opinion, they copied and pasted many maps and the characters that relies on large team sizes to balance everything out with little to no adjustments.

I have only played two full games before giving up on the mode entirely. I had so much more fun on it, (mostly because the team knows how valuable the medic is and actually protects) but i waited an hour and a half just to be put into a game only for it to end because some kid got killed in pregame and quit out. I havent been able to get into a match again since then

We have a little competition in our family named : NAME THE TV AD! The situation was 3 for me 2 for my mom 2 for my stepdad. (You get points when you guess the ad right.) Then there was a Uncle Ben's rice commercial. I just blindly shouted UNCLE DANE!

Personally, I think valves system of how they update the game is very flawed. We shouldn't have to wait 6-8 months to get changes to the crit a cola and when it still isn't balanced have to wait another 6-8 months. I think valve should try to do a few balance changes every month or so. I know there team is small though so just 1-2 is fine. I feel like that would help when they push a competitive update by already having more balanced weapons in place.

Highlander allows specialist classes to play all time instead of scouts, demos etc to only be played. It allows variety. It also allows people who main those classes to be able to play comp.

Making 6v6 more open to all classes (by adding Attack/Defend maps, making Payload fun, or rebalancing weapons) will create a better result than Highlander. This is mainly due to the smaller (better) playercount, and the ability to switch between classes (which is not a tactic in HL).

Heyo Dane, I'm a sniper main. I don't mean a "I-Just-Installed-The-Game-And-I-Wanna-360-No-Scope" sniper main but I'm also not a "I'm-So-Good-At-Sniper-I-Never-Miss-A-Shot-With-My-Botkiller-And-My-Anger" sniper main. But the problem is that even though this can be a viable class in comp, people think I'm one of these two people. This means that I never play comp because although I'm quite good ad scout and soldier and engie, sniper is where i thrive an where I think I could be an actual asset to my team. I really wish comp allowed us to show that as a specialist class we can be helpful, thanks for showing this to the world even if it is by playing something like engie which people don't hate as much as sniper.

My only gripe is that when saying the Scout is the best class in competetive, and unfortunately that might be the case, but it's in large part thanks to the fact that playing a scout counterpick is a good way to get shouted at in a competetive setting. Nerfing the Scout into the ground just because he's too strong against Soldiers and Medics would work at the high levels of play, but then he'd suffer hugely in pubs where he'd start losing even harder than he already does against Engineers, heavies with natascha (or just heavies in general when they're skilled enough and aren't in poor situations), Pyros, etc. Part of the problem isn't just Scout being overpowered in general, it's just the meta that's so rigidly locked into what it is that's making Scouts so ridiculously strong.

An idea: make an alternate variation of ctf for comp without entirely removing the current version (a lot of people like dicking around on current ctf servers, including me). The two main differences I would add would be a timer, about 20 minutes or so, and if the time runs out the team with the most captures wins. Also, the intel should only take about 20 seconds to return to base. Also, an idea for a stalemate, an overtime mode in which the intel can't be returned to base. It's rough idea but I just thought I might as well type it somewhere.

there should really be a vote kick system in comp, because every match I have ever played, there was at least one idiot spy/sniper that wouldn't change, and hackers can't get kicked, so it's just hell

What to do for stacking classes is to make them deal less damage the more of them there are. So if you have 12 engies that’s like 2 damage a sentry bullet

Valve should add a restriction to the smaller maps in casual like Hoodoo or Goldrush that they force highlander or at least a 9 player limit

The fact that it'd be harder to do I don't think is a reason to exclude highlander. Matchmaking as a whole has a large amount of problems, and long queue times isn't a reason to exclude highlander because, I mean hell, everyone has that issue. Main thing about Highlander is that it would require more coordination than a regular tf2 comp, usually meaning you need to create a party. Which can be done, and I've seen comp highlander players. Main thing is that the leaving penalties don't seem harsh enough to discourage people from queueing into it and then screwing up everyone else. I wonder if it'd be possible to include an in-game spectator queue for people who can join into the game that are part of a party, but are part of the "overflow" if someone has to quit suddenly.

I think this version of comp should be playable when you reach about level 75-100 in casual, so that way you don't have to spend money to gain access to this. Also more KOTH maps and less 5cp maps would be nice (koth is my personal favorite core game-mode)

The reason I like koth so much is that pyro used to be my main (but only because I really tried my best to be the best pyro I could be, yet When I played heavy more (and heavy is my 5th most played class as of now) I realized that heavy felt natural, (and I use the Natasha because slowing enemy, especially on scouts, is very noticeable) and I'm better of as a heavy main.

'Fortress Forever is much faster than TF2, and players have stricter positions. In TF2 both teams move around the map pushing each other back in a kind of tug-of-war; in FF the defending team creates a defensive strategy and then tries to hold their base against the oncoming attacking team. FF is more structured and static, having players with expertise defending particular choke points in maps and creating a defensive strategy together as to how to defend their base. Fortress Forever is typically played Capture-the-flag, with teams being split into Offense and Defense. Defenders typically have "positions" at key choke points in their base which they are expected to hold down, stopping attackers getting past and relaying information about those that do to their teammates. Competitive play typically has 4 defenders and 4 attackers, either in a 4v4 (swapping sides at half time) or 8v8 format (with each team having 4 attackers and 4 defenders).' The maps ported to TF2 may not be good, but the strategies in the remake are better.

I've been trying to play competitive mode ever since I got premium TF2, but no one plays competitive! And even if I find a server, it either crashes, or my team are Rank 3s and the enemy are Rank 7s!

Prolly late, but what if you could only stack the classes tf2 classifies as offensive classes? Support wouldn't be a problem as most teams only run one spy or one sniper when it's needed, and having one medic will still be balanced. Again, one engineer, one heavy, and one demo will be balanced. The only classes that most comp teams have two of are the offense classes. 2 scouts and 2 soldiers will still be run. Pyro might be a thing depending on future updates.

Would it be too much or to confusing for people to split not the community entirely, but weapons stats? Like, could we have competitive mode stats for weapons and then have different but similar stats for casual mode. What I'm trying to say is the stats for competitive mode would revolve around high level game play and when F2P's want to grow up and play with the big boys their going to have to learn and understand a more balanced version of that weapon that they knew and loved. While casual mode stats are, obviously, geared more towards giving stats that give a niche advantage in a specific way in a bigger more chaotic server setting.

How exactly would you fix CtF? The critical issue is that the attack and defend portions of the game mode are disconnected, and each team may as well be two teams in two different games. What if teams could only score with their briefcase secure in base, and a player carrying the enemy's briefcase could speed up the return of their team's taken briefcase by standing near it, with Scouts having a boosted rating?

That sounds to me like it would help at the very least, and could even go a long way. Sometimes it just takes a simple adjustment to nix the overplayed stalemate strategies. A different, random idea - playing around with the concept of seperating the briefcase spawn and the cap point, so players with the enemy briefcase have to do something other than just return to their own base. Variants that come to mind: a) The briefcase spawn is not the cap for each team (place to bring enemy briefcases). Instead the cap is located in the *enemy's* base, far from the briefcase spawn. This means that each team's cap force would face the challenge of moving back and forth repeatedly in the enemy base without easy breaks or respites. Leaving the base for a respite could increase the window the enemy has to hunt cappers or set up a defence around the cap. Perhaps the cap could be movement-restricted until someone has taken its respective briefcase. b) The briefcase must be taken through a series of caps at a time, ala the bomb in MvM or really just Baseball/Rounders. This could then replace or diminish the need for multiple briefcases per round. Obviously this overlaps with normal CP and Payload, but then those gamemodes work well for a reason. Subtypes vary whether the briefcase spawn changes place on subsequent caps, or if the briefcase will return to the very beginning if lost and a whole round must begin. Another subtype could overlap with: c) Multiple briefcases allowed, but if dropped they return almost instantly, or return the moment the briefcase's owning team touches it. Combined with b), CtF really does turn into Baseball/Rounders, with each team dividing resources between getting more briefcases and helping to ferry the existing briefcases along the chain. On its own, the number of caps needed would go up, and teams could play to an advantage (eg first team to have a lead of 3 briefcases wins) rather than a set score.

In the two months since I made that post, I've come to the understanding that CtF works well for the casual game mode. An effectively optional objective, one that allows players to drop in or out of pursuing it or countering the enemy's pursuit of it between going for random kills, the main appeal to casual. I'd still like to see a more comp-patible CtF, but I'm more appreciative of the mode as it stands with a view to its purpose on the casual scale of play.

I wouldn't mind seeing some PL or A/D maps in comp but the problem is they would have to design new maps just for that player size. The current maps that use that game type are even more boring then dane claims 5 cp is. if you lose a few players on offense in PL then you just sit around waiting for your team to get back and nothing happens and on the other end if you lose a couple players on defense you just lose 1-2 points because of the spawn timer. I think if some new maps were designed around a smaller player size this would be a great game mode to watch. From a spectator point of view I enjoyed prolander the most. It was always action packed and allowed teams to adapt to eachothers strategies. It also didn't have quite as much action as HL so it was a bit easier to follow.

Perhaps the issue of bad players taking over an important class in prolander could be negated by letting other players take control of the class of those that are dead/have been in the spawn for 15+ seconds. This isn't a perfect solution either and it would require some modification of game code, but hey. It's something.

so just as a sort of off the top of my head thought. what if for class limits base it off the types of class? so say if. medic engi and heavy were a group thered be a limit of 4 of them. to work as effectively a 1 per class but it could help with the people who wont play a different class. not sure if it would help with the greifers. just a quick thought so sorry if too rough of a convept.

What if he got highlander in casual mode? It seems fun but there's no way for a casual player to get into one. Not only would this introduce a larger community to it, but it would also teach newer players how each class has a roll and who they counter and positioning to avoid each class they incounter

I think comp mode should have a class limit of 2 and pubs should have default a class limit of 3 with a vote option to make it unlimited again and another vote option to toggle random crits.

Valve left this game to die a long long time ago, along with all their other games when they decided there was more money in steam than in games. TF2 could have been so much more than it was, but it's much too late for that now, all that's left is to have fun in some casual games while it slowly fizzles out.

~5:50 there could be a solution for that , simply do the old LoL thing , join Match , have 3-5 Minutes to discuss who takes which class ( like 2 Friends could say they are premade Heavy + Medic ) or everyone Queues up for 2-3 Classes , he can switch if its needed , but most of the time he has to play that class

I think you're completely wrong about 5CP maps having bad chokes, people turtling and points to near to spawn, because 1. Übers exist and 2. That's why killing (nearly) everyone before capping last is vital. However, this doesn't not happen on pubs because the 1-3 players who actually know the game and are playing the game have completely no way of making sure all 12 players on the other team is dead at one time for them to cap. (Edit) as for the lack of class diversity, I do agree with you that quite a few classes are just not viable on 5CP, but those classes are usually what people like to call "no skill", like heavy were the only thing you do is shoot people, and engineer, which can be played with skill, although it is not vital for engineer to work.

Know it's 2019, but also I think it's a problem that valve comp doesn't allow fps configs. Literally like 90% of 6s players use fps configs for better performance so why on earth shouldn't it be allowed here? I mean it's allowed in casual even. This is something that confuses me and I think more people would give it a try if it wasn't so restrictive.

If I could work at Valve, I'd work on TF2 full time and play it for fun regularly. Instead of VOLVO PLZ for every single issue you could just DAVID/BLIZ PLZ me in a pub match and we could discuss the issue in game as it's happening. I could ten boot up my PC the next morning and fix it (with proper documentation both in the code and in the patch notes which is a nonexistent Valve practice). For example, the way I would handle ProLander class switching would be for Player A to choose a Class that Player B is already playing. Player B would then get a notification on their screen asking them if they would like to switch classes after they die with Player A. If yes, after Player B dies and if Player A has not respawned, Player A respawns with Player B's former class. Player B then chooses a new class upon respawn. If Player A is forced to respawn and Player B still has not died as the same class that A wants to play as, then A can choose to either spectate the match and wait for B or play as a different class until they die as that temporary class and respawn finally with the class they wanted to play as. See, look Valve, I did your work for you. And I'd even volunteer to fix all of your other issues while you focus on selling hats and keys. Of course, this is assuming they'd let me take charge.

How about we add a larger Map pool and also have something similar like in Overwacht were when ever you enter a map ot tells you which Character are good on this specific map. This would also help newer players hiw dont now what to play.
