When you think about it the Wind in the willows has a bittersweet ending. Yes Toad redeemed and got his house back and lived happily ever after with his friends Rat, Mole and Badger but unfortunately he was still a wanted fugitive for escaping prison. And I highly doubt despite being rich, he managed to pay a top lawyer that cleared his name. And even if he did apologise for his actions he would still had been put back in prison on a longer sentence. And it is possible the girl and engine driver were also exposed for helping Toad too and face a prison sentence because escaping prison is a very serious crime. The only assumption I can think of is that either Toad hid till the heat was off.

I don't think this was a fair trial, for one thing Toad doesn't have a barrister, and the fact that the jury is singing in harmony with the judge should be cause for question as to their impartiality.

At this point of the story, I think the trial was finished and this was the sentencing of the convicted defendant. The jury were simply witnessing the end echoing their previous decision. Also consider the judges first words in the video: 'To my mind, the only difficulty is how to make it sufficiently hot for this rogue'. In other adaptations, this is followed with a statement that Toad was already found guilty on his crimes.

There were a lot of clever musical moments in the score to this cartoon (which also does its best to meld the MIlne adaptation with the difficult parts of the Grahame original). But this? It's not quite set to the same tune as Dominique (Singing Nun etc) but it's very close.

You know looking back on it today, I found Toad's sentence far too extreme. 20 years in jail for grand theft auto, reckless driving, and for calling a cop a name. What the fuck?! In reality, he should've got 6 years and 4 month jail (16 months for grand theft auto, 5 years imprisonment, and a fine of up to $4,000 for reckless driving, and nothing for calling a cop a name). 20 years was far too harsh, especially since no one was killed or even hurt as a result, and is without a doubt abusement of authority. I don't know if it was like that during the early 20th century, but if toad was in today's court, he would got 6 years and 4 months with $4,000 fine, instead of 20 years.

Insulting the police earned him 15 years. Add that to the 12 months for stealing the car and the 3 years for reckless driving. Of course that would've brought the total up to 19, but the judge decided to add one more year just to be on the safe side.
