I personally do agree with you that Hoenn deserves #1 though. The rest of the list I feel is very well reasoned, and I agree with all of the choices you made.

The Hoenn region always screamed "adventure" to me, from its landscapes, different biomes, soundtrack, and the diversity of different pokemon there, it was always my favorite as a kid and still gives me goosebumps pf excitement as an adult.

A small detail i like about hoenns handling of the (after hoenn) obligatory desert area is that it could make some sense to be there. Like its squeezed inbetween 2 mountain ridges, mt. Chimney and the mountains to the east. the mountains block great amount of rainfall to this area and it became desert/a dustbowl . Supported by the lush rainfalls on the east side (119) and the presence of large bodies of water on the west of mt. Chimney (route 117 after fallarbor) Also supported by the lore that states that Verdanturf sees no Ash because of winds. So wind patterns are likely south north or south east to north west, agan pushing away rainfall from the ocean and bringing drier air from the center of hoenn to this area. Meanwhile in Galar: Jarring Biome Teansitions sometimes mid route

I think hoenn and unova are definitely the best. I think unova especially in bw2 is the best at rewarding exploration and has lots of optional content and dungeons. Hoenn has more mystery. I think hgss also does this well though with lots of added optional locations with a few great dungeons with good rewards

Dugtrio Ramen. Maybe. But still. That first halve of the game was really repetitive. Going back & forth from Petalburg to Rustboro and than back to Petalburg. Onwards to Mauville, Mt.Chimney, Fallarbor Town & Meteor Fall and than back to Fallabar Town and Mt. Chimney. After Lavender Town, it's back to Mauville, Rustboro & Petalburg and than back to Rustboro & Mauville. Headed to Fortree City & leave to the next route. Than you head back to Fortree City for am Gym. Than it's to the route where one takes u to Mt. Pyre, while the other is to Lilycove Town. Until u realized that you have to go back to the route that takes u to Mt. Pyre. And than u have to Fly all the way back to Mt. Chimney to stop Team Magma once again. And the rest of the journey is nothing but surfing through bland water routes. Like seriously, this is just padding in so many wrong ways & u can't even use Fly to take an shortcut until after Fortree City where you have to beat the Gym Leader to finally access it. And combined with the HM issues, it can be really tedious. I just wish they handled the layouts in an better way instead of having us bouncing around the exact same locations in the region all over the place.

@@jjc4924 Ok I see some things that went wrong in your route. Each time you return to a city, you have more hms and unlock another path to a different area. This game handles backtracking really well actually. Rather than make you take the same path back, it unlocks a new path around to get back. Now... It sounds like you missed a major shortcut the game introduced after meteor falls. After the loop around to meteor falls, keep going down into rustboro. From there, head to the whismur cave. By this point you have hm rock smash and you open a path straight to Mauville. From there just go up to mt. Chimney to lavaridge. After that gym, You get the sandstorm goggles now, which let's you go into the desert. The desert is a shortcut to the ash route. It also unlocks the sand tower that gives you a fossil. Then comes the only real backtracking I remember, go back through the cave to rustboro. But now you if you had gotten the fossil, you get yourself a cool fossil Pokemon. Afterwards down to the 5th gym. Even then it's an easy route to here. Now the next part that I think you have missed. After the 5th gym, you unlock surf. So instead of going back to the whismur cave, you're intended to try out surf. From the right of petalburg to where you first fought may, you can surf a shortcut straight to slateport. Then up the bike path and right to the next section of the game. Or you could also go left of the 5th gym. The old man takes you on a boat down usually, but now you can surf yourself. Regiice is on that path. Then if you surf right after that, you get a new optional area, the abandoned shipwreck. After that you can keep going right to slateport, and up the bike and right to the next section. Furthermore, after defeating your dad, you can tell your mom and she'll give you a lucky egg or amulet coin, I forget. Even further, if you go back to mauville, and talk to the gym leader that's standing outside, he'll let you into another optional area, the power plant, which you surf to. The exploration and content in this game is amazing imo. I understand how you may feel about your own playthrough, but the region itself is very well made imo and I would be thrilled if they could make a similar experience again.

Dugtrio Ramen. I get what your saying. And I have played Emerald before over & over again. And I still don't think they handled it's layout to your progression that well. Even if I did found some other ways to get back without going the normal way, I still have to backtrack at the long ways that just might or might not be longer & irritating to go back. Like let's say after Meteor Fall, I do go down to reach Rustboro City instead of just heading back towards Fallabar Town & head to Mauville City and head to Mt. Chimney, I still have to go all the way back to Mt. Chimney anyway to stop Team Magma & than I have to go toLavaridge Town for an 4th Gym Badge & than I have to going all the way back to Petalburg for the 5th Gym. In fact, from Meteor Fall to Rustboro & Mauville is an little farther there than going to back to Fallabar Town and Route 119 or whatever where the volcanic ashes are & back to Mt. Chimney. And yeah. There's an desert area that I can go at any points & do some side fetch where I required an item or so. But I still have to backtrack there if I wanted to explore more of the ruins. It's still going to be in the exact same destination that I need to progress no matter where I can go for fast travel. So yeah. I gotta disagree on that whole backtracking doing well thing because honestly, it's not. And as an fan of Metroidvania, this game doesn't do it's open ended very well I do like how Hoenn looks in terms of the variety & world map design. But unfortunately; as through the layouts to your progression of what the game tells you to go, it should've done it way better than what we been through. And for region that supposed to be more open ended, it really doesn't do it's open ended that well if I'm being honest and isn't quite as open ended as Kanto or even Johto.

I have to argue this to a certain extent. Yes, the routes are linear, but hasn't that been the case for every pokemon game? I also don't understand the complaint about puzzles, especially since in the older games it boiled down to 'push this rock here, step on this tile to go over here'. I also think that the wild area is rather well designed (apart from the trees). I will however agree with the point made about not being able to fully explore cities. I do think that GF got Galar pretty much spot on, and it depicts the UK rather well.

For me: 1- Sinnoh 1- Hoenn I can't really choose one, i love both a lot 2- Unova 3- Kalos 4- Alola 5- Johto 6- Galar 7- Kanto Just to explain: I love kanto but it is extremely limited, not only in the original version but also in all the remakes, even with everything new that came in the second and third gen, fire red and leaf green continued without much news and this remained even in Let's Go which even bringing some news to the franchise it's still the same game 20 years ago but with 3D models.

How is it limited. I also dislike kanto now cuz all the remakes but I do not think it's limited. After Lt. Surge, you can take on the next 3 gyms in any order. That's pretty generous with freedom that other regions don't have. Also Pokemon variety is great. People forget that this is the region with the most new Pokemon, with 151 Pokemon. You get a lot of options for a party. It doesn't have much environmental variety, but otherwise I think kanto is a pretty ok region. It is just way overdone.

And honestly, galar is slightly better in the nonlinear thing. Pokémon Sword and Shield aren’t as linear as Pokémon Sun and Moon and Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon and Pokémon Sword and Shield aka galar does not have a lot of optional areas, but the wild area is a fun explorable part of the region and the most of the areas in the wild areas are optional and galar does have some explorable place that you can get lost easily like slumbering weald and the glimwood tangle and some mini islands in some routes, etc and I get lost easily there and in my opinion, Pokémon Sword and Shield also have a great storyline and it’s not as bad as Pokémon X and Y and Pokémon Gold and Silver.

Finally some Kalos appreciation, It comes with a great selection of Pokémon, explorable routes like 15, 19, and 22, unique cities like Lumiose and Snowbelle and some of the best diversity out of any region. Unfortunately we didn't get the Power Plant. Really wish Kalos got another game because this region had all the potential to be the best.

Johto just has that cozy homey rural feel that other regions fail to replicate. There's something so comfy about running around route 29 with its music playing, and finding Sentrets, Hoothoots, Rattatas, and Pidgeys. Also, Johto has my all-time favorite pokemon in the form of Ampharos, and my favorite Bug-type pokemon in the form of Heracross.

I feel the same actually. Gamefreak could stand t make a pokemon game that's smaller scale and The Pokemon Company sort of did this to them though GF isn't entirely not to blame. These guys have the budget to get top tier programmers and they just won't. I digress though. They could take from whatever they've learned with S/V and scale it down without it being Let's Go quality. Much like TOTK I think gamers should be done with big boring half baked open worlds. And maybe just maybe we can get a more intimate game out of it that looks better and plays better with tons of content in smaller areas that devs can focus on.

I personally prefer galar over alola, kalos and unova and the other regions as well simply because galar is one of the best regions in Pokémon in My opinion, galar is diverse with the wild area, there’s fewer exploration in galar, but the wild area improved galar quite a bit, there’s some optional islands such as the islands in route 2 and route 9 also has optional islands and there’s an optional area inside slumbering weald and I get lost pretty easily in the slumbering weald during My play through of Pokémon Sword. I haven’t bought the DLC yet and still plans to buy the DLC for Pokémon Sword and Shield.

Also plenty of explorable areas and activities that more people should really go to and do. Like I think the reason why they even remember the ruins of alph exterior is because it's the only place to get Natu. Honestly I think it's because people play through it in the same way they do with every other pokemon game, which doesn't really encourage the slow playstyle of the reigon. Like if I played through Galar the way I played through Johto I'd be called a newb, taking 3 and a half days between Gym 4 and gym 5. But in Johto in that time I could, rematch Schoolkid Alan and see how he has both gotten stronger and added a Natu AND a Quagsire to his team, good for you kid. Catch myself both a Scyther and a Pinsir in 2 different bug catching contest, losing once to freaking Cooltrainer Nick, but winning a Sunstone the second time to evolve my Sunkern, getting up early to make some money off of the Bargain Shop, get a rare candy from paying attention to Buena's passwords, get myself a few free pokeballs from kurt, develop a gambling addiction and get Fire Blast for my Togepi, and finally use that Fire Blast Togepi, along with Pinsir, Bayleef, Lapras, and Eevee, to kick down Pryces door and claim my 5th badge, causing Togepi to evolve from happiness. What can I do in Gen 8? Wait for the right weather to catch some more pokemon and do some raids? I'll pass.

@@showmeyourmoves8551 But BDSP pretty much fixed the SLOW PASTE and REMOVED HMS. Surfing is faster here rather than the OG. BDSP are god tiers, better than ORAS. BDSP At Least Are Better Remakes Than ORAS since ORAS are too easy, BDSP is quite hard and some of the Gym Leaders are hard to beat, the Champion remains hard, Don’t Get Me Wrong, ORAS is a Good Remake, But in My Opinion, BDSP are better because of many new features such as the Grand Underground, Pokémon Hideaways, Ramanas Park that features Legendary Pokémon from Generation 1-3, Pokémon FOLLOW You and many more.

@@Its_SaberHG I love sinnohs story. It's not in your face like XY. You're not hand fed the information. Details like Cyrus's (or was it Volkner? I forgot) grandfather talking about how he felt so guilty about his abusive upbringing and not helping him. Cyrus not wanting to destroy the world, but instead being so emotionally detached that he believes a world without emotion is what's best for everyone. He had motive, twisted as it was. Tell me anything interesting about Lysandre. He's a walking stereotype and the game pretending he wasn't the villain from the start is laughable. I am fine with people liking XY, but claiming it's story is better than sinnohs is just something I can't understand. I don't even like sinnoh very much anyway.

8: galar (the equivalent of shiny paint job, poor functioning) 7: johto (like you said, boring, repetitive, and lacking overall) 6: kanto (again, same as you said, shares faults of johto but improves upon them) 5: kalos (it's a nice region, it's just that it honestly isn't memorable, and when paired with the other faults of XY, it sadly underperforms) 4: sinnoh (really nice general design and diversity, but THE CONSTANT HM'S!! Paired with slow pacing, Sinnoh is enjoyable yet tedious at once 3: hoenn (i'm not a fan of the water abundance, but hoenn is memorable and plays nicely, connecting to itself well) 2: alola (people hate on alola and their games but i loved them, it felt really immersive without so many drawbacks like galar has) 1: unova (very linear, especially in BW1, but being locked to an area makes you explore it to its fullest extent, the areas are I'd say some of the most diverse the series has to offer, and being chock full of postgame where you aren't locked makes unova quite well-rounded and enjoyable. Besides the one-path storyline, unova has in my opinion the least faults out of the main regions.)

So kalos more is like a game where you can enjoy it and it’s locations and explore but have it be super easy vs sword and shield which is just go through super straight routes and get interrupted every second.

@@leohaddad9225 I agree but it's still in the worst generations. Like one guy said it's X and Y that are the problem and not Kalos itself. Kalos was meant to have sequels like Black 2 and White 2 but it was scrapped after GameFreak and TPC saw the low sales on Black 2 and White 2 so Gen 6 was just abandoned. I really enjoyed the anime and I like the characters it's just the games are too linear but still much better than Galar will ever be.

I think BW2 helped the design of Unova a lot. The original BW really made Unova feel like a series of roadside attractions more than an explorable region even if there were some neat secrets to be found. Though I don't think any region other than Galar is bad and they.all have their own highlights that really make them standout. I could just as easily see Johto, Alola, or Kanto, as top 3 regions.

You 100% nailed the issues I have with Alola's linearity. Also, even though Kalos had less new Pokemon than Alola I felt they had a better presence. I regularly encountered a good mix of new and old in Kalos, whereas I was always running into old mons in Alola and it felt like the new Pokemon weren't even native to the region it was so hard to find some of them (I literally never even registered a Bruxish despite it being one of the first new Pokemon revealed).

Alola had too many legendaries+ultra beast and non evolvable Pokémon. The latter may be a subjective thing, but one of the things I like the most in the games is to see my 'mon get stronger. Honestly, I feel I didn't have many options when I first played it.

Hoenn Will always bee #1 in my book. From puzzles to catch the regi trio, to climbing sky pillar in emerald to catch rayquaza ( and soft resetting so many times to fall through the right tile), to going to the weather institute to track strange weather conditions to find kyogre and groudon. Not to mention navel rock, and birth island through events . It always felt special and I still pop out the gameboy sp and emerald from time to time.

Can we just acknowledge some of the horrendous biome distribution? It has always bothered me that there is deserts just placed in the middle of Hoenn, Unova, Alola (Ula’Ula island) and Galar. While I adore Desert Resort in Unova, it would’ve been cool if GameFreak instead extended Castelia city, or added an area reminiscent of Central Park. With Alola it does not make sense that the ruins of abundance and Tapu Bulu’s grassy terrain sit atop a cacti filled wasteland. Also, Snowpoint city on the map sits at the same height of the resort area but somehow the resort area is a tropical rather than cold. Other than this Sinnoh’s geography makes a lot of sense.

I'm a Kalos supporter, so I'm just gonna drop everything I love about this region here: I think Kalos' routes still felt like classic Pokémon with allowing you to explore, and more branching paths. It really isn't as linear as it might seem at first glance. Sure, earlier in the game the routes are linear, but there are some nice open ended area's like the giant water area that comes right after Shalour City. And aside from Glittering Cave, the other caves all have a few alternate paths. Reflection Cave and Terminus Cave specifically are nice and big. I also enjoy the unique locations in the game. Forests, caves, cities, deserts, swamps, mountains, it's all here. This also applies to some caves. Glittering Cave and Reflection Cave look quite different from your standard Pokémon caves. I know some people think it's unrealistic that Kalos has a desert/wasteland area, an autumn-ish area and a snowy area all pretty close together, but honestly I don't mind that. We are talking Pokémon here, a game where kids are arguably more successful and heroic than adults, fish turn into octopuss, and mice can shock you. It's fiction, so it really doesn't matter to me, but thats just my opinion of course. Having Lumiose City as some sort of hub was also a cool thing imo. It truly was a big capital that connected the region together, with lots of things to do. A bunch of restaurants, clothing stores, some sketchy dark alleys to explore, Taxi's driving around that you can use, Gogoats to ride, and my personal favorite, the Pokéball shop. Speaking of cities, I really like how different each town felt. Laverre City, Anistar City, Ambrette Town, Snowbelle City, Coumarine City, and Dendemille Town all have unique set pieces and visuals. Unlike what I assume is most of the Pokémon community (sadly), I found these locations to be very memorable. The Pokémon selection is wonderful. Like you said, a whopping 450 different species to find is great. Don't really have anything to add to what you said about this, except that maybe a few more legendaries would have helped (though idk if those are considered part of the regional dex). Something else I noticed is that every route actually has a name. For example, Route 16 is actually called Mélancolie Path, and Route 7 is known as Rivière Walk. It's a small detail, sure, but it adds to building the world of Pokémon, which is a plus. There is definitely some more things but it's currently 3 AM here so I'd better get some sleep.

I live for Pokemon reviews like this because one of the big reasons why I love to revisit old games and buy new games is literally for BOTH tourism and exploration experiences of each game's region. I agree with you 100% for the Galar's last placement. While Sword and Shield gave us the most beautiful scenery in routes and cities than ever before, but this game is (in how I see things) is just STRICTLY tourism. There's 0% exploration. Players are basically not even allowed to enter or go beyond places where it clearly meant for privacy, or naturally inaccessible to a normal person. Because of this, the most better regions land up to Hoenn, Sinnoh, and Unova. My favorite has always been Sinnoh. It's home for me, and I am excited with the remakes in the future.

HMs never really bothered me that much. Sure it definitely was annoying in the endgame because you had to lug around your HM slave to navigate, but I still think its better that it's YOUR pokemon helping you out instead of just some stock pokemon that everyone gets like in alola. Having your team help you navigate made the journey more personal. It's hardly important compared to the myriad of other problems pokemon has though

Controversial opinion I actually prefer HM instead of a bike on water or a flying taxi, they make your team useful even outside of battle and as you progress in lvl your exploration skill also progresses. BUT, I would change them so they wouldn't take up a move slot. Meaning I would have them as, outside of battle, abilities that they unlock as you progress. A blastoise is able to swim and is big enough to ride it etc.

Pokémon Sword and Shield aren’t as linear as Pokémon Sun and Moon and Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon and Pokémon Sword and Shield aka galar does not have a lot of optional areas, but the wild area is a fun explorable part of the region and the most of the areas in the wild areas are optional and galar does have some explorable place that you can get lost easily like slumbering weald and the glimwood tangle and some mini islands in some routes, etc and I get lost easily there and in my opinion, Pokémon Sword and Shield also have a great storyline and it’s not as bad as Pokémon X and Y and Pokémon Gold and Silver.

Pokémon Sword and Shield aren’t as linear as Pokémon Sun and Moon and Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon and Pokémon Sword and Shield aka galar does not have a lot of optional areas, but the wild area is a fun explorable part of the region and the most of the areas in the wild areas are optional and galar does have some explorable place that you can get lost easily like slumbering weald and the glimwood tangle and some mini islands in some routes, etc and I get lost easily there and in my opinion, Pokémon Sword and Shield also have a great storyline and it’s not as bad as Pokémon X and Y and Pokémon Gold and Silver.

I really wasn't a fan of Pokemon until I played RSE. And it was the Pokemon designs and the landscape that made me fall in love with the game.

When oras came out I decided to pick it up for Christmas as a kid. I am so glad I did because I've never felt so immersed in a world before constantly exploring and progressing to find these new areas and finding new pokemon. I'm so glad my first pokemon game was Omega Ruby and it will always have a special place in my heart with its beautiful world.

I think that the reason the 3d regions are more linear is because of the camera. The perspective makes things a bit more difficult to navigate. Hopefully the free camera will allow for actual dungeons in the next games.

Even more simply, designing in 3D takes 10x more work than 2D. And with yearly releases there’s no time to really improve on it.

My top three would be 1.Hoenn 2.Sinnoh 3.Unova If I could live in any pokemon region I would totally go for Hoenn, a tropical region just like my country Brazil, there are beaches and places to explore.

I actually agree with the rankings on this list, call me bias because I started with gen 3 so that's one of my all.time rage and top regions (not just for nostalgia's sake) but the other entries on this list o think deserve their ranking. I'm currently replaying BW and one of the things I love about unova is that it feels like it's alive and bustling compared to some, Castelia city is a perfect example with actually vehicles driving along the bridge, boats sailing when you go across the sky bridge and all the NPC's walking through the city streets, it ACTUALLY felt like a city and not just 7 buildings that typically denotes a city in Pokémon games

Hoenn has always been my favorite!!! Played Kanto on gamboy color. And sapphire on the ds. Literally played it 20-40 times back to back making new teams. Re catching all of the legendaries. And the music was top tier!! Love how cool they make Steven and its so satisfying to finally beat him in the end. Also blaziken was the start of the fire fighting starter trend by giving him the overpowered high jump kick. That game is literally gold!

I do like the slow tempo of dppt a lot. It comes with great jazzy pace with the gorgeous ost, it is just relaxing to go through Sinnoh. Definitely my rank 1

Sinnoh is my favorite region as well. I actually like, that the region itself is a huge challenge. I can understand, that it's annoying to rely on your HM slave so much, but to me it's a great aspect. When you've made it successfully to where you wanted to go to, it makes you feel like you've truly worked for it and deserve to be where you are now. One more thing I adore is how easy it is to have a well-functioning team. I'm playing the diamond version at the moment and from gym 1 to gym 8 I only needed 4 pokémon for fighting (I chose Turtwig as my starter and then caught a Starly, Shinx and a Ponyta) + one Bibarel as my HM slave. The only reason for me to add a Gyarados and Dialga to my team is how hard the top 4 and especially Cynthia are. But until now it was really easy just with Torterra, Staraptor, Luxray and Rapidash.

i like that pokémon is linear. let’s me focus on main game and then i can explore/ do everything else post game. Plus the main point is collecting all gym badges and becoming champion. then when ur champion, u can basically do whatever you want

i do agree for the most part and galar has really beautiful places but your right they just end so quick i was really dissapointed by how short all the paths are feel like they only gave it like 30% when they could of added so much more and theres no real reason to go back and look at these places too would of been so nice to go back and explore places you couldnt go to earlier on in the games

I love sinnoh and I think it making itself more challenging to get through makes it worthwhile while keeping a variety and each location being unique. If they remake it I pray they keep an emphasis on difficulty and the region feeling mysterious and lived in
