Ranking Barnes LRX bullets

When choosing a hunting bullet BC is generally going to be the last piece of relevant information that should be influencing that decision. If you're at the point where splitting hairs on BC #'s is relevant than you are talking about extreme long range hunting ie 500y+. If you are hunting these ranges you should be skilled enough to work with the BC parameters anyhow to still put BC low on your decision making as you are going into the hunt understanding your specific ballistic calculations and if it's to windy you don't shoot. Choosing whether to have a bullet that is G1 or G7 scale has more bearing than BC. Do not get caught up in the notion that BC is a measure of accuracy. It is a measure of trajectory. Accuracy is a combination of many factors where the primary one is the shooter, and if that shooter believes for one second that BC has a significant impact on hunting accuracy than they are letting themselves be duped.

I don't have an opinion on your rankings, but the only reason I would use any of them would be if nothing else shot good in my rifle, extreme penitration is needed for close range with dangerous game, or California, but i would choose other monolithics anyway if i had the option. With the bullet slowing down faster combined with a need for higher velocity to create as much trauma, I see no reason for them, when I personally have never seen a need for more penitration than a good bonded with higher bc provides. For an example, I shot a huge bodied bull elk right through the shoulder bone angling towards me at maybe 60 yards, with a 110 gr accubond out of the 257 weatherby with a starting velocity of 3550fps resulting in a 1 shot kill. The same combo will exit a cow elk with a behind the shoulder shot easily. That wouldn't be my top pick for elk, but it sure works. I also love the Swift bonded bullet I can't spell. After killing 3 antelope last year with them all between 5 and 6 hundred yards with the 6.5x300, i couldn't believe how well they opened, and made huge holes, which I did not expect at that range on that size of animal. Sorry for the extra tangent lol, but I think those are good examples, of why thinking you need them for exits and all that is wrong in my opinion.

Living in CA copper is all we have. Barnes are the most consistently accurate which is the most important to me and I use the .284s

You could always shoot it as a subsonic 300 blackout on the last item on your list.

For your next video, maybe include minimum velocities for expansion. That's what made the difference for me between the 139 and 145, for my 7 mag. The 139 expands at 200fps slower. But you did have some good information. Thank you for your video.

I really like the 175 LRX, its my main bullet for 300 win mag and RUM. Whats nice about it is it has the same BC as the 180 Accubond so you can use the same adjustments more or less.

Great looking option for the 30-06. Anything helps to increase velocity of copper bullets at longer distances, for expansion purposes.

I don’t think bc matters that much at ethical hunting ranges . The trade off Is the great performance on game . I’ll take a lower bc monometal over a high bc cup and core any day . Great video tho and I’m sure valuable for guys shooting past 4 or 500 yards .

The browning x bolt comes in 1-8” twist in 300 win mag…. I looked hard for a new 300 win mag in 1-8”, not all of their models have it but a lot do!

Dear sir ,just wondering why BC is such a big deal to you, bc does not kill animals ..most animals in this country is killed with in 300 to 400 yards, but today's bullet market has paper thin bullets with high bc's that are meant for targets not meat.

The Barnes website Load data uses a 1:10 twist rate with the 175 LRX in .30 cal not 1:11.

It’s not Barnes, it’s physics. You can always risk and try shooting them on your gun, worse case scenario is your out of 50 bucks

@@ReloadingWeatherby I just got back from the range a couple hours ago. Ran single loads from 53 gr to 55.3 gr. Velocity plateaued at 54.7 gr to 55 gr around 3190 fps. I thought that was kind of high considering the Barnes manual shows the max load of 55.3 gr out of a 24" barrel at 3116 (I have a 22"). Seating depth was 3.30". I'm going to make a few loads tonight at 54.6 through 55.0 and see how it groups.

This is such a cool analysis. I’m sold out to copper bullets for a variety of reasons, and am shifting to LRXs as I can. Currently running it in 6.5 creedmoor, and have the 175 on the docket for 30-06. I’m anxious to run it in my favorite hunting workhorse 270wsm but can’t justify current costs of switching from my current commitment to the 140 TSX. Patience, my son. Lol

RW, interesting video. Personally I am not yet a fan of the all copper bullets. Yes, it's the future, but I am locked in the past. Actually I should correct that, the old A-Square mono solids are my favorite elephant, hippo and 2nd shot buffalo bullet. But I've yet to find an all copper that "hits as hard" as the old Nosler Partition or Trophy Bonded Bear Claw. With that being said, I also don't concern myself too much with a bullets BC. Mostly because long-range shots are easier today than at any other time in history and the performance on impact is more important. At least to me it is. All the best to you. Cheers, Jeff

For some reason or another, my rifle does not like them, but it sure likes Hammer Hunters. I’m confident they are a good bullet but with no cooperation from my rifle, I will remain with AB’s for whitetails and Hammers for larger. Thanks for video. I’m a faithful viewer.

Hey Austin thanks again for your superb hunting bullet coverage as always! So, turns out that my two eldest adult daughters chipped in and presented my wife and I with two Chital (Axis Deer) hunts for her and I this year! I am doing cartwheels over this since it has been our dream to bag a couple of these animals for over a decade! So, I think your rankings came in good time here. I think I will end my long exclusive Nosler Partition usage with this hunt right here and I was thinking along the lines of bonded bullets for her 243 and my 270. But now, I see some good monolithic options that might be worth a closer look. Based on your data, I am probably going to try out a load work-up for the 270. My 270 barrel is a custom 1:8 and really does pretty well with long-for-caliber bullets. I am going to get some 155gr bullets and see if I can get em to print. Got lots of time...

Nice video I will be reloading the 129gr Lrx in 270 Win. but my research tells me the .277 110 ttsx should shoot more accurately. I live in California so Copper is the only way to go. I do not see the point of retooling and following all the sheeple and switching to a 6.5 Creedmore when I have the brass, powder and bullets all lined up in 270 win. My best reloads in Barnes so far have been 120 TTSX, 7x57, 2850 fps/est. .373 BC. I get nice groups under an inch @100 yds. Doing research I realize on average a 140 7mm lead core bullet is the same length as a 120 barnes bulet in ttsx or a 130 .277 lead bullet is equivilent to a 110 copper for length so from blogs the 270 Win shooters have been getting consistent accuracy. Also of note people are getting good results with 130 ttsx which is the equivillent of a lead core 150 in bullet length. BC is not critical to me it is accuracy 1st! I never have shot over 300 yards for a deer especially where I hunt and Barnes are HUNTING bullets not target bullets.. I tend to be a stalk hunter never seem to get set up for those 700 yards shots. When I find a good bullet that is reloading accurately I find it shoots accurately at all powder charges from the low to the max charge. Nosler book is the best but since I load only Barnes I go off the Barnes reloading manual sometimes they will put a diamond next to the best powder charge and usually that is a strong suggestion to go with! Going off popularity clearly the 6.5 Creedmore 127 lrx, then .308 175 lrx, .277 129 lrx, and 7mm 139 lrx. The huge heavy bullets you talk about are for the new 300 rifle magnums that have come out on 1-8 twist very rare and expensive foe long range hunting of elk. The Browning Hells canyon rifles. I know a lot of hunters shooting across canyon and the bullets land all over the place. Everything works great in a youtube video. Funniest thing I heard was some guys shot across canyon kicked up the dirt five yards below the buck and the buck got up to investigate the kicked up dirt. So the hunter got the buck on the 2nd shot:)

I want them to list the optimal velocity range for every copper bullet. for ex 2200- 2900 f/s. So that I can choose a bullet that can be driven to that optimal speed from the cartridge im using. The high BC only helps with maintaining speed and direction. I think that one should be careful not to trade expansion for bc. But if you like shooting weatherby speed might not be an issue 😅 I like my grendel 🙏😎

Just about any 200 gr is going to have a higher b.c. and the 190 LRX basically has identical b.c.

Great video with some good information i tried the 250 lrx last season in a 338 rum at 2950 fps it done ok till i shot one with a ttsx in a 257 weatherby and it did way better than the 338

You have to compare these to other all copper bullets. Some people can't shoot lead.

After handloading for over 30 years, my new go-to load for 270 Win is 130 TTSX over a very full case of Superformance powder running in the mid to high 3300+fps out of a 25.5" barrel. I have a 280AI in process for the first time. I have the 139 LRX to try in it. Right now my 280 Rems are shooting 140 grain ballistic tips in the mid 3200s with Superformance and the 150 ELD-X around 3100s with IMR4831

I left a couple comments a week ago about the 300 wby. I bought one and shot maybe 15 rounds last weekend and my shoulder is literally still green purple and brown from it. I love it. Once I found Hammer Bullets, I got away from Barnes Bullets. I get more velocity and none of the copper fouling with the Hammers. Good luck and stay safe!!! 😉😉😉

LRX are cool and all but badlands bulldozers are better in my opinion IF you have rifles with faster twists BUT 30 cals have an exception with the 195 or 180gr. I have my 300wby loaded with 195gr with a BC of .675 shooting at 3120fps. This things are long range killers!

Ranking based solely on BC is misleading and not very useful. At REASONABLE ranges, i.e. under 300 yards, BC is the least useful data point to consider. More useful information would be bullet construction, ideal impact velocities, useful range per given load, etc.
