As a Taekwondo teacher, for those who give this guy flack for his comments about TKD, let me just quickly put into perspective that most of his ranking videos are about the art’s effectiveness in real life altercations, where TKD is notoriously known for focusing on the very rule-based competition sparring, demos, and flexibility/acrobatics. There’s certainly a place for it, it’s a super effective and wonderful art, so understand who Seth is and what he focuses on before saying too much in the comments :)

Well Capoeira got some straight kicks: "Bencao" (a front/push kick where you kicked with the sole or with the heel) usually aimed in the "roda" on the chest or abdomen, but outside the "roda" additional aimed at the head. Its a very strong kick. "Chapa-de-frente" is a quite fast sidekick. "Chapa-de-costas" its a donkey kick, aimed at the knees or abdomen. "Pisao" is a sidekick, where you use your rear leg or a variation from "Pisao" is "Chapa Giratoria" (a "Pisao with an additional front step). "Ponteira" is similar to an teep kick. The straight kicks would be rarely used in a "Roda", because they are meant to end a fight. All this kicks a fast and are tricky for opponent, because circular kicks can be used in that place. They will be trained in the same amount of time and intensity like the circular kicks. But in a street fight a Capoeirista use more the straight kicks and sweeps than the circular kicks. There is a misconception that a "Roda" that is a sparring, its more correct that is an question and answer game that can be held in the public, because they are usually no intent to harm each between the player, just to outdo and hinder each other. It's ideal for demonstrations. But sparrings would be done in the training, but not in a demonstration. But i must admit how much sparring and conditioning take in place depend strongly on the group (especially origin and style), place (Europe, Russia/Central Asia, Brazil/South America, USA/Canada, Japan), the teacher and on the focus (like when lot of womens participate and few mens, sparring done rarely). So a B rank is justified. But interesting note is when you examine groups that are from the northern part of brazil, they often incorporated Luta Livre in their training. You can best describe Luta Livre as a bane to BJJ (they are similar, but their origin is different). In Vale Tudo BJJ-practioners have a hard time, while Luta Livre shine there.For a while BJJ refused to incorporate leglocks, because Luta Livre does it alot. While Capoeira has his takedowns and throws, this isn't the main focus, but Luta Livre strangely blend well in.

The cool thing with roda is that it's all up to the participants on what is allowed and what isn't. I've seen rodas where they could slap, takedown, and knee (body only), but never connect a kick or punch. I think what capoeira really teaches is improvisation, malandragem, you gotta be tricky.

Pendhd - For those particular games, I don't think they were looking to make much contact. That being said, they also weren't intentionally missing. If you watch it again, notice that one practitioner throws the kick at where the other person's head is in space at the outset of the kick and the other practitioner dodges. This is how the majority of games go. I have however seen an instance of a really strong meia Lua de compasso (wheel kick with the hand on the ground striking with the heel) delivered lower than normal, coupled with the dodger leaving his head too high that resulted in a compressed skull fracture and emergency surgery. @@caudillo234 I would have to disagree. Karate styles are well known for speed, within kick boxing and mma it's one of the main advantages karate fighters are credited with Furthermore the speed of tkd kicks in general tends to limit its power rather than increase or help it the high speed comes from the use of a type of snap normally with different striking surfaces like the top of the foot , only using lead leg kicks normally and within wtf and point tkd more flick kicks with are almost straight up and down with no body movement or chambering to give any strength within it The issue is all tkd kicks are within karate but karate has other versions of each that tkd does not it also includes leg kicks with tkd does not Karate makes use of the ball, heel and shin while ignoring the foot top or instep for safer kicks It has a better middle ground of thrust and snap It maintains speed enough to be recognisably different within full contact My main style is wing chun kung fu so I know about speed for power it's one of our main principles and there's a lot more to it, just being fast won't give you the power while increasing the velocity of mass creates force , you need the correct form to use that speed to transfer the force enough

Great stuff Seth! I must say, Muay Thai has the most brutal leg kicks in the game. One of my favourite Muay Thai inspired kicks is to fake a rear leg turning kick to the abdomen and chop it down diagonally into the thigh muscle. You can generate SO much torque and blunt force with that kick, hit the right point on the muscle and that person won't be able to apply weight to that leg for some time! It just requires quite a lot of investment on your behalf due to the need to condition your shins and desensitise yourself towards taking leg kicks in return.

@bentinho4 жыл бұрын
Capoeira has loads of straight kicks. I taught and practiced for many years and can tell you those kicks are practiced about as much as the circular ones, along with the requisite counters, sweeps and takedowns for them. Of course, it depends on the group and teachers, how much of that you will see in a roda... Some groups are much more aggressive than others, etc. Therefore, you may see straight kicks more often in their rodas and games. Also, there are different types of rodas/games and more public facing rodas tend to de-emphasize the combative aspects. The most confusion probably comes from the roda itself... as it isn't straight up sparring but contact can and does occur...it's usually reserved between mid to higher level practitioners (I've been in some pretty rough rodas myself and have seen straight up fights in the roda... lol). There's an etiquette to the game and straight kicks are generally seen as aggressive and can be interpreted/misinterpreted as an invitation to "get rough" or even sometimes disrespectful. You have to really be able to read the other person's intentions, the feel of the game and the environment of the roda. A roda is also, typically, a multi-ranked and age affair...you can have someone in their first month playing someone with 30 years experience with kids/teens mixed in...so that adds a whole different dimension.

As a genuine request. Please do an in depth video on the differences between TKD kicks and Karate. The arts seem extremely similar. They both stand in the very side ways bouncing stance, they throw snap kicks and spinning kicks. They just seem to have very minor differences.
@8unlucky82 жыл бұрын
The biggest difference having done both imo is time taekwondos system is a kicking focused system the one minor difference I tend to feel though is if muay Thai is a bat and tkd is a whip karate lands somewhere in the middle like tkd everything we do how we turn our hips to how we stand everything is built on the ability to rotate or hips to generate velocity. Karate tends to be a bit more rigid and based than that I grew up doing ITF tkd and now I do olympic and we sparred karate guys alot our sister school was tsd and they'd bring karate guys around. We'd always joke that they were slow they were but there defense wasn't movement based and they tended to be able to hit harder closer. Now the karate school was shorin Ryu so old-school Okinawan karate and karate and tkd nowadays have so many offshoots and branches this could all be a school difference
@hpm1014 Жыл бұрын
Search Karate Kyokushin and you'll see a massive difference. We fight and kick in really short distances, including low kicks and knee attacks. And we don't bounce at all. So this specific karate style doesn't look at all like taekwondo. We also compete with bare knuckles and no shin or feet protections, BTW.
@Jaseran3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sensei Seth, thanks for this interesting and fun video. I'm glad to see some savate in here for once (but please, try to watch some more recent videos rather than old 90's rip ;p) :) I've done Savate for years and I'll try to give you some feedback regarding your judgment. First of all, B tiers seems legit to me. Savate kicks specificity come from its core rule set: we boxe wearing shoes. So in Savate, you can kick with any part of the feet but only with the feet (not with the chin). This means that Savate kicks aim much more for speed rather than power. They are more stinging rather than choping. The best weapon in kicks savate is the toe kick. Since you wear shoes and you aim for speed first, you can deal pretty painful damages without breaking your foot. After 2 or 3 kicks to the solar plexus, it can become very difficult to breath and this kick is very difficult to stop. Send a short punches combinaison, side step and send a body snap kick with your toe in the solar plexus. Your feet will sneak between your opponent boxing guard while he is blocking the leg. Very legit tactic with shoes. Push kick descending on the thigh is also sooo painful and can stop the opponent attack in a nasty way. And the hook kick to the head with shoes man... It does hurt even with no power... But the main problem with savate kicks also comes from its core rule. You can only kick with the foot, not the chin, so you are very limited with distance management (kicking from too close would result in a chin kick). More over, the rule set also adds artificial limits such as "no vertical kick" and "all kicks must be chambered". All these rules make savate kicks elegent to watch but a bit limited in variety I think... And our side push kick is very similar to the karate kick you hate. I'm not found of it either when sent to the body but if you rather aim to the thigh then, like I said, it becomes a bit slow but really efficient.

Yes. So there is two types of Tang Soo Do Practitioners. You have the sport practitioner where you see the point sparing. And then you have the traditional practitioner who focuses more on the self defense side. I do not put much stock in point sparing but that’s just my opinion. @@Abluemoon9112 I can’t speak for every Tang Soo Do Association but ours use to be much different on the sparring side. We use to be able to punch to the face and contact the body. Sir, I was actually interested in hearing how you would really rank TKD kicks. Then you just quickly just put them in F then moved on. Since TKD is actually a spin off of Tang Soo Do I was looking forward to hearing your breakdown. Then was curious if you were going to break it into the WT, ITF, and ITF pre sine wave styles.

Tang Soo Dõ is very much a close cousin to Taekwondõ, as the both have a strong Shotõkan Karate base, but Taekwondõ has the strong native Korean taekkyon influence, whereas Tang Soo Dõ has a bit more hand use since the founder also trained in various styles of Chinese martial arts, combining that with the Soo Bahk Do the founder studied. So if you're going to give Tang Soo Dõ a B rating then Taekwondõ needs to go in that slot as well. Also it greatly depends upon which type of TKD you are referring to, as (based upon my personal experience and opinion) ITF Taekwondõ is a bit closer to the version originally used by the Korean military, thus a bit more self defense oriented than the WTF/WT Taekwondõ that is heavily involved with the Olympics and the Kukkikwon. Even though if Taekwondõ in either organization in being taught fully and with equal emphasis on all aspects of the curriculum, then both of these types of Taekwondõ are good. As far as other Kicking styles you did mention, that are known for their kicks due to the Korean origins or influence is arts like Hapkidõ, Kuk Sool Won, and Hwa Rang Do; and you could have even included the native Korean art of Taekkyon despite it's rarity. And Ninjutsu also has a decent array of combat oriented kicks. And if you were going to mention Muay Thai, you should have also included it's parent art of Muay Boran. And also since Jesse Enkemp did a video on how Japanese Karate wound up with high level kicks that were not originally in Okinawan Karate, is that Funakoshi's son was also a student of Savate having been exposed to it when Japanese was trying to become a bit more westernized. And since there are over 150 styles of Silat, penjak/pencak silat is just as deadly as any other style of Silat and it's practitioners fight differently in sport than they would in a self defense situation, if they are trained properly. Just like any art that has self defense capabilities.

I have been hoping Tang Soo Do would come up more in these videos, since lack of hand use is one of the main weaknesses ascribed to TKD.

Tae Kwon Do has a history younger people don’t know about. Karate was known as the point system that stopped after a almost hit and it lost some of its steam that has came back today with MMA. Tae Kwon Do then started with full contact sparing in the 80’s with no headgear and to score a point the rule book actually required “trembling shock” and a competitor in Florida got killed in a Florida state championship in either 86 or 87 then they made head gear mandatory. As it’s popular Olympic side developed things became more sporty much like Judo after it became an Olympic sport and that’s what people tend to criticize today but underneath it there’s a hard style martial art 🥋 if they embrace it.

Why is TaeKwonDaycare considered a TRADITIONAL Martial Art ? The name TaeKwonDouche was created in something like 1959 I believe. And no, I'm not talking about Soo Bakh Do or any of those. Some arts from the 1920's are considered "Modern" , that always confused me.

Kyokushin is less of a hybrid, more of a focus on one aspect (when it comes to the sport), sanda over wing chun
@michaelterrell50614 жыл бұрын
Well I mean all of karate comes from different styles of Kung fu and native okinowan styles, and soon Japanese influences in things like jujutsu, judo, and aikido. So all of karate is basically a bunch of hybrid styles. And kyokushin directly comes from Goju ryu, shotokan, judo, taikiken(Yi quan), shaolin Kung fu, and some other things. So yes. As for sanda vs wing chun. Sanda just means sparring and there a GREAT deal of wing chun practitioner who do it. As a matter of fact a lot of wing chun schools(in China) work with sanda to conduct sparring and produce great competition. As a matter of fact Yi long happens to have won a wing chun tournament and we know how good he is in sanda.

As a kyokushin karate student, I'm actually surprised for his opinion on the side kick, I personally love it because I constantly like to make myself a smaller target by standing at a 45 degree so I'm not completely sideways, but I'm not an easy target either, and the side kick is the easiest for me to perform to push my opponent back whenever they try to step in (if I want to make space). I personally really like the side kick.

@IsaacLausell4 жыл бұрын
Love these videos, also the ones you did with Jesse Enkamp are awesome. I think it was a good list. Yoko Geri Keage can be quite awkward. As far as I know it was one of Funakoshi’s changes to the Shorin-Ryu or based katas such as Itosu’s Pinans. In the older forms of these Kata they would do something that looked like a front kick except that it was done to the side usually from a back stance. The motion itself does not allow for a lot of on the fly adjustment, you are kind of committed to the motion whether as with the keage version you got the kick out faster. Unfortunately Funakoshi’s writings does not seem to address with enough clarity the role of the supporting foot nor the whole kick. For example traditionally it is taught that you cannot twist your supporting foot however when kicking high with this kick depending on your level of flexibility you might hurt your knee if there is no give on your supporting foot. Then there is the issue of setting the kick. In older versions you would point at the target with you knee, later people would just pick up the leg like with Kekomi or go right into the kick. In its older context these katas depict an engagement that is much more at close range hence there Yoko Geri was more meant as a somewhat low kick to the groin or stomach due to the proximity to the implied opponent. The intro of the keage motion changes somewhat the context and distance. I have seen many substituted it in katas for Yoko Heri Kekomi which has a thrusting trajectory nonetheless it is easier to get a nice high kick out of it which folks who like to compete in katas tend to favor. As for the mechanics of it It certainly packs more power as well.

I don't know, but this has probably already been mentioned in the comments. The Karate Yoko geri keage that you mentioned is the version of the side kick where you don't lift up your knee before executing the kick. In yoko keage you just keep your leg straight all the way through the kick. In ordinary yoko geri, you lift your knee up first. It's the same thing with Mae geri (front kick) and Mae keage. I don't want to come through as an wise ass, but wanted just to correct that "keage" term. I'm a big fan of your KZbin channel and I really like your humble way of explaining things. Osu no seishin!
