For context with the Skylanders lore, in that universe there exists this entity called “The Darkness”. The Darkness is one of the main villains of the series, originally introduced as just a dark cloud that covers everything that exists, but in later games, gets more personified and intimidating. Through a number of different circumstances, some Skylanders characters end up being exposed to dark magic/dark energy created from/by The Darkness itself. When the Skylanders absorbed this dark energy, they turned into dark versions of themselves. Through spells and training, these characters learned to control the darkness within themselves, combining its power with their own. Now, they can harness that energy when they need to and turn into their dark counterparts on command. As far as how DK and Bowser actually ended up in the world of Skylanders, you’ll have to read the IDW Comic Book “Unexpected Allies”, which is a tie-in to the game those figures released for. You can read it online or purchase a copy from third-party sites like eBay.

As well, back in 2015, Nintendo partnered with Activision to create these “Skymiibo” hybrid toys-to-life figures for the game Skylanders: SuperChargers. Typically, a Starter Pack for Skylanders includes a copy of the game, the Portal of Power device which is what reads the chips, and a small handful of figures to start you out. For Starter Packs released for Nintendo consoles, the figures included would be the Nintendo characters. For this game, there was a heavy focus on vehicle gameplay sections within story mode as well as a Mario Kart-style racing mode. Each character on the roster for this game had a signature vehicle, which when paired together on the Portal of Power, would “SuperCharge” the vehicle and allow for different gameplay attributes. In the Nintendo starter packs, Donkey Kong was included alongside his signature vehicle, the Barrel Blaster, and Bowser was paired with his signature vehicle, the Clown Cruiser. For most games, Activision also released a Dark Edition Starter Pack, which included the Dark Edition Skylanders figures in place of the standard versions, as well as the usual Starter Pack goodies. The game copy included is identical to the standard version of the game. The standard DK, Bowser, and their vehicles were also released outside of their Starter Packs, for those that got the Dark Edition Starter Packs and wanted the standard versions for their collections. As well, it should be noted that the Skymiibo figures, as well as their vehicles, are only compatible with copies of the game for Nintendo consoles. If you ever wish to try playing through Skylanders, I do recommend playing through the games starting from the first release (Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure), but if you are only interested in playing the games compatible with the Skymiibo figures, do make sure you grab the Wii U copy of the game, instead of the Wii or 3DS copy, as those versions only include a racing mode, which to be honest isn’t that fun.

I don't know the exact "lore" reasons for the Dark Skylanders, but since Skylanders Swap Force they made a "Dark Edition" of the game which gives you extra Skylanders with a dark pallet. The game itself is the same.

As someone who knows skylanders I shall gracefully share my knowledge on why Bowser and Donkey Kong are Dark. It’s because they were in the Wii U starter pack for Superchargers, yup that’s it, that’s the only reason. From Swap Force onwards every game has a special “dark” starter pack and all that means is that the normal starter pack skylanders you get are black and silver (some games change some of the skylanders you get in the dark starter pack but superchargers on Wii U didn’t so that’s unimportant.) So yeah, there is zero reason you’re welcome, I accept card or debit.

I’m so happy the skylander amiibos are included The dark DK is one of three amiibos I ever owned, the others being yarn yoshi and the smash bros cloud amiibo Dark skylanders are only cosmetic in the games, though there is apparently some lore reason I do not know unfortunately. What’s really cool is that they function as skylanders AND amiibo which is awesome because I can play broken DK in superchargers and train a dark DK amiibo in ultimate Also the reason the bases look so weird is because all the superchargers have that base design, I assume it’s supposed to look like an engine of sorts because vehicles is the whole gimmick of the game. The little icon in front is the element of the skylander, with bowser and DK being fire and life respectively.

I bought too many of these things back in the day, and kept them all in the boxes too, thinking I'd be able to sell a full collection one day. I then moved somewhere with awful post and all that world shutting down stuff happened, and I have been unable to sell them since. So now I'm just stuck with over 100 of these things in boxes taking up so much space and I don't want any of them.... (the world's most first-world problem). The Ice Climbers amiibo is peak though; I'm keeping that one.
