I like The Grisha Trilogy because of the fact that Leigh Bardugo drew inspiration from Imperial Russia, and there are some really cool ideas in the trilogy. However, I think she took her game to the next level in "Six Of Crows" and really swung for the upper decks in this one!

I have read nearly 30 books this quarter. Had to check GoodReads to see what was at the top and the bottom Top 2 would be "the turn of the key" and "all of this I give to you". which surprisingly are both stand-alone mysteries/thrillers?! The least favorite was a novella " the house at the bottom of the lake. " I also read my first Brandon Sanderson this quarter and started with "the way of kings". I know, maybe not the best place to start, but it is done now. I would put it third out of those read this quarter. I just bought your book for kindle (I read everything on Kindle). Ever since I heard about it I’ve been nervous about reading The Kingdom of Back, because I was worried that the way music is written about would be super obscure and flowery and, as a classically trained musician, I find that a lot of times when writers write about a musician character they make the music description overly sentimental, when a trained musician usually wouldn’t think about things in that way. I don’t know if I’m making sense, but I’m glad to hear you liked it!
@ebnovels4 жыл бұрын
You’re making perfect sense-that’s literally exactly what I thought before picking it up (I didn’t think I’d see anyone express that same feeling!). The story definitely doesn’t lean much on being over the top with the music; it’s more about her life and the magical realism stuff :)

I am way too indecisive to actually rank books like this, but I can say without a shadow of a doubt that my favorite book so far this year is Nation by Terry Pratchett. It's a book outside of the Discworld series that people tend to attach to him but still has a lot of his signature witty humor. It does have a bit of magical realism, but he uses it to enhance the themes of defining humanity and society, so I really enjoyed that aspect :)

I 100% agree on All the Light We Cannot See. In regards to Steelheart, I think Sanderson has a lot of fans that came from the YA age-range because his books are a really good intro to adult fantasy. Personally, I think that some fans read it after being sucked into reading only adult fantasy for a time, and then pick up Steelheart because it’s a Sanderson book and find it refreshing compared to adult books. I know that’s why I originally loved it. Since then, I’ve realized I love both adult and YA, I was just completely burned out of YA when I switched to adult, so I had to rediscover YA lol.

I'm actually scared to pick up The Kingdom of Back... I have really enjoyed some of Marie Lu's other books but I recently read Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones and REALLY disliked it and after having read that and then seeing the synopsis of The Kingdom of Back it's sounds like an identical story...even though the synopsis of Wintersong doesn't make that apparent and doesn't mention Liesl's brother Josef, their bond or the fact that this book is SOO focused on music. I also am not sure how I feel about that since Marie Lu read and blurbed Wintersong back in 2016 (her blurb is on the front cover). Hopefully I'm wrong about how similar they are and that the premise is the only thing they have in common. Also since you loved it, Wintersong might be worth checking out for you? My biggest issue with it was the writing (it reminded me of how I felt about The Night Circus; super flowery & descriptive with a non-sensical feeling plot). I went in thinking it was going to be this great adventure type story and it just wasn't at all!

I picked up Throne of Glass series in February and was pleasantly surprised by not utterly disliking Celaena the way I did with Feyre of ACOTAR series (at least in the 2 books of Throne of Glass series that I have read so far). Her saying "Wait! I need to prepare thoroughly before I enter a certain dangerous situation" was kinda a breath of fresh air (even if she has her reckless moments) for me and something I didn't expect from an SJM protagonist. That being said, Celaena definitely has "a special snowflake" feel to me, which is somewhat irritating and I feel quite meh about the plot of the series so far, but, as I was "promised" an interesting, Nesta like character in Manon, I'll continue on a bit further to meet that character. Also, I was thinking during the video: "How can Elle keep holding books up for so long in that seemingly unpleasant position?!" And then I remembered that you're a violinist and most likely used to that position anyway 😁

Honorable mentions: Spellslinger, Nevermoor, Ninefox Gambit. My 2 least favorite reads were: House of Salt and Sorrows (bleh, just bad) and Exit West (style experiment of using 9 "and" in one single very long sentence (as conjunctions, not lists) and doing that all the time didn't work for me. For the Kingdom of Back: I have decided Marie Lu is not for me. I always think I will enjoy a series from her, but then I can NEVER connect to her characters. As someone who can get teary-eyed at commercials, it's a really weird experience to not care so much. I connected slightly more to the Young Elite series than I did to the Legend series. I'm not sure if it's a character development thing or a writing style thing or what. The Kingdom of Back sounds interesting, but I'm weary of picking it up because of that. Do you think you connected more to the characters in this one over her other books, or is it about up to par with her others?

Oh yeah, to me it is meaningless if a book is in a top list of "highly regarded/respectable people" or how many awards they get because, if we're being honest here, publishers make up those lists themselves and even top selling list are not a representation of actual top selling books but a mix between good sales and whatever the NY Times editors liked or something like that. I prefer to watch individual booktubers with similar taste as mine, like Elliot, and check out some of those. My ratings are: 1) The Final Empire 2) The Count of Montecristo 3) Skyward 4) The Well of Ascension 5) Children of Time 6) And every morning the way home gets longer and longer. Backman 7) Dracula. Bram Stoker 8) The Final Empire 9) The Wolf in the Whale 10) La primera profesía de Morgan Fay 11) Starsight 12) The Martian 13) Radio Silence 14) King Lear 15) Metamorphosis by Kafka 16) Cruel Prince 17) The End of Childhood by Arthur C Clarke (I hated it, felt like reading a sci fi version of the communist manifesto)

The problem with ranking Steelheart is that it is part of a trilogy, although I agree it's not his best work.

Favourite and least favourite books I've read so far this year, eh? Favourite would probably be Warchild by Karin Lowachee. Least favourite probably Doctor Who: Deadly Reunion by Terrance Dicks and Barry Letts.

I do agree with you on The Lies of Locke Lamora. I was rather disappointed -It was really slow and those vignettes!!!!! Ugh! I did it as a buddy read and we both were kinda 'meh'. I felt like if one liked Six of Crows, you'd like Lies, but I really wasn't a fan of either.

That’s interesting, because I liked SoC, but not LOLL 😅 But they do both center around criminals and heists. I think I just preferred the execution for SoC more :)

@@ebnovels I have Ninth House and I am going to give it a try. I felt Six and Lies were both 'capers' and maybe I am not into sub-genre. But I want to give her another try....Six was one everyone seems to love and I thought it was okay. In general, are you a fan of Bardugo?

I literally cheered out loud when you named Kingdom of Back as your favorite! I absolutely loved it too, and was sad to see it ranked under 4 stars on Goodreads. For me, it was a perfect book and an excellent escape from today’s world. 👏 🤗

My least favorite was a hard sci-fi called the Three Body Problem by Liu Cixin and my favorite and out of nowhere, my favorite was Miracle Creek by Angie Kim.
@ebnovels4 жыл бұрын
Oh, what’s that one about? I’ve heard of the other, the Three Body Problem, and usually I hear it spoken of with praise, so I’m sorry that wasn’t the case for you!
@astellus4 жыл бұрын
@@ebnovels Miracle Creek was written by a lawyer and centers around a group of people all struggling with a terrible accident that occurred. You spend the whole book switching perspectives, never quite sure who ultimately was to blame, all the while the court case is playing out in the background. I was surprised because it really isn't the type of book I normally gravitate towards, but her writing was just top notch. As for my least favorite. I really wished I could have liked it more based on all the praise it received. The core ideas were really neat, but the execution and the math explanations and the characters all just fell flat for me. Maybe it's the translation that takes away a bit, but ultimately I was just disappointed!

I completely agree about Alina from Grisha trilogy. I would never expect a young, poor orphan to understand that people in court are mostly using each other for power. Especially if she is so insecure and just wants to fit in for the first time in her life. Quite the opposite - I would never believe if she would understand these kind of things immediately. So I think her decisions and actions (which were more like just enjoying life which was so good for the first time) was completely ok. Besides she was very wary with the Darkling in the beginning, which I appreciate.

You expressed my thoughts exactly! It’s funny, I see people complain sometimes that characters are too good at everything, and then with Alina, people hate that she’s not very good at things 😆 I get not loving her, but hey, I don’t hate her!

For the Grisha trilogy : It wasn't Alina that I hated, but Mal. He is a whole asshole. And better not talk about the Darkling, everyone's praising him and the dude seems completly absent throughout the entire serie lol, he's just an old man, not even that charismatic. I hope the netflix show will do him better!

I like Ben Barnes a lot (loved him in Punisher) so I’m hoping he’ll really bring the character to life. I don’t hate Mal-I kinda wish we had his perspective sometimes, but I haven’t reread the third yet, and I remember him being a bit much in that one 😆
