I think Hortensia's quotes definitely could have benefited from doing something like Yunaka's where she drops the front and shows how she actually is but instead they use three quotes that fit with how she acts and then throws in one that gives insight into her backstory but has it delivered in a way that just doesn't work :/

It's a lil' something called "JP voice", her crit quotes (and almost all her lines in general) go hard in JP. Rosado, Merrin and Amber also get a massive JP buff, with Amber honestly being a contender for S tier imo. Unfortunately there's also a JP debuff for units like Louis, Goldmary and Yunaka (though still easy S), but that's a tradeoff I'm willing to take. edit: holy shit you have to let alcryst cook in JP

You said it very well, Yunaka's lines are basic as hell (except for one, a bit on that in a moment) but the delivery is so astronomically amazing it gives you chills. The way her attitude changes on a dime, letting her core show for just a second is captivating. The line that sticks out is "Look what you made me do" and anyone that knows about Yunaka's whole character shtick regarding her past and her bubbly "personality" will understand exactly why that line hits different.

I feel like the direction they went with hortensia's English voice somehow made nearly the entire fandom hate her as a character, I played with JP voices first and I really don't mind her character, she's bratty and stuck up but at least her realistic screams and crying during the tragic moments made her feel somewhat real, especially since (according to datamines) she's about 13

Honestly I think Amber got shafted. Yes, his lines are oddly delivered and cringe - but SO IS HE. It took me a LONG time to come around on him because the whiplash I got when I first heard his voice (and also realized WHAT he was saying) was so jarring, but I think his crit quotes perfectly encapsulate his character and are at least funny. Whereas most people in C and D are just boring.

Characters like Ivy, Diamant, Etie, and *especially* Yunaka really show just how important the voice actor's delivery can be on how good a crit quote is. Yunaka is also a great example of fully utilizing a character's backstory into their crit quotes as well. This video having her dodge the attack going "nope!" 😊 directly into the "dropped your guard" 😶 is just peak

Have you thought about doing any tier list based on heroes? It has a lot of potential with death quotes, special quotes, etc. There are a lot of units but you could condense them to smaller groups or do an entirely different format since there are so many of them. You could pause at quotes that go hard for example

Framme’s “steward attack” is probably my favorite in the game, because she’d do the engage art crit animation, which is just this silly finger jab, and to me that all together is really funny. It also encapsulates the energy of training Framme, a unit who’s the epitome of 0x4 (her speed growth is good lol, she does need to level it before she doubles anything though.) into a unit that can actually do anything, which I enjoy. I made her a high priest too, so she’d get the arts crit animation of high priest which is just a special move from a fighting game. I love bouche but he is C tier, at best. Also imo Louis’s quotes are very overrated here.

A year late to this, but damn I never knew how much people hated Amber's quotes 😂 I made him a swordmaster in my game, and I fucking died laughing the first time he crit and said "I hope this looks cool!" Immediately became part of the 'never bench' squad. Goofy wannabe hero + over-the-top anime bs class = perfect fit. It's practically parody material. Imo he should have been the Brodian sword fighter retainer. No shade to Lapis but Amber's shtick is so much better on a swordmaster than a lance cav. And I mean come on, surely somebody obsessed with becoming a hero like Amber would pick a sword, the most stereotypical FE protagonist weapon? Would be hilarious if he brought it up in a bond conversation too like "did you ever notice that most of the emblems wield swords as their signature weapon? They even have cool names! When I become a hero, I'm gonna call mine the Alpacablade!"
