Ranking Every Death Battle Episode (Part 4)

Now we will be ranking every death battle episode from season 4. This is not a season that a lot of people talk about. Is there a reason why? Is season 4 one of the worst seasons of Death Battle or is it a hidden gem?
Death Battle season 4 was a minor but important turning point for the show. This was where consistency was prioritized as opposed to trying to make something groundbreaking every once in a while, like in seasons 2 and 3. This was also where Death Battle would start using more characters from other mediums like comic books and anime. Although this did push Screwattack away from a video game-based channel, it reached out to wider audiences to help Death Battle grow further as a series, despite debuting fewer new series than virtually every other season of Death Battle, ironically enough. Ranking every Death Battle episode from season 4 felt like a slog because of how many dull and outright sloppy episodes I had to go through.
That being said, Death Battle season 4 had some stand-out episodes that people still love today, and those episodes were good enough for me to enjoy season 4 overall. When ranking every Death Battle episode season 4 may come across as weak, but admittedly, the revisit was enjoyable enough.
Expect some hot takes though. ;)
To celebrate Death Battle season 10 I have decided to rank every Death Battle episode within its first 10 seasons. Death Battle has always been one of the most well-known shows on the internet. Whether it's praised for its amazing fights are criticized for its poor research, Death Battle episodes have marked their place in internet culture. As someone who grew up with this series, I felt that ranking every Death Battle episode would be the best way to celebrate season 10.

I assumed that Dragon Ball Heroes was another anime adaptation, but it started off as a Japan exclusive arcade game that got an anime adaptation. That's an understandable interpretation and Glacius was definitely trying to do that, but at the same time, Subby turning blue is how he activates an ice clone, and iirc it's the same sound effect as that move. It's still poorly conveyed, so I guess it's not right to blame others for thinking that way.

This isn't even the last time something like this happens. Kiryu incinerates a city block and is now country level. Jake Long blows through some walls with his fire and is now multi-city level. I get that incinerating a city block would require more power than blowing it up and that blowing up walls with fire would require more power than with brute force or concentrated beams, but I'm pretty sure the power output wouldn't be that big.

51:50 During the I am Done Scene, I was always interpreting it as TJ Combo being finally fed up with Balrog and stops holding back. As you mentioned earlier, TJ Combo actually does want to redeem himself which would also involve not breaking the rules/cheating. Aka. killing. For the most of the fight, TJ Combo just held back, referencing some of Balrog’s moments where he no sold his punches. Him only beginning to use his fighting game techniques only after all hell is lose can be interpreted him trying not to dive again into the era which he is shameful of. So when Balrog nearly kills him, only THEN he enters his Killer Instinct and mops the floor with Balrog (which can be connected to the fact that TJ is both stronger and faster in the analysis).

Can I just say, I’m halfway through binge watching your entire Death Battle Retrospective and I am seriously invested! I haven’t watched Death Battle for years but just hearing your elaborate and very thorough analyses is really engaging. You gave the represented series the respect they deserve, even the ones you say you don’t like very much, and you did a fantastic job explaining the backstory and reception of each episode, and it made for a great watching experience even as someone who’s unfamiliar with many of these franchises. Ah yeah, I get dem funni Bragging Rights! But yeah, this is what I call the transitional "Filler Season" of Death Battle. Outside of Power Rangers vs Voltron, Balrog vs TJ Combo, Shredder vs Silver Samurai, Naruto vs Ichigo, Sephiroth vs Vergil, and Scrooge McDuck vs Shovel Knight (imo), the majority of this season doesn't really stick out to me that much. It's just... there. But hey, we got those 6 episodes and the addition of Therewolf Media onto the show, so that's _something_ , I guess. EDIT: Okay, that ad break joke got a good laugh out of me.

My biggest problem with Lara croft vs Nathan Drake is the comparison between lara's arrow wound and Nate's Gunshot wound. The episode tries to act as if the wounds are similar when theyre done under vastly different circumstances. First of all, A gun shot and Arrow wound are different kinds of wounds. Secondly, Lara was able to cauterize her wound, stopping the bleeding while Nate was bleeding the whole time. Also Nate was in the cold, climbing a train that was falling off a cliff, and im pretty sure got into a gunfight afterwards WHILE STILL BLEEDING.

Digimon in the tamers era have shown the ability to Digivolve without a partner, it became harder to do so after Culumon was personified into a Digimon of his own. Culumon is the force that drives digivolution itself turned into a Digimon.

Mugetsu was animated before, its what he uses to beat aizen. what ben was mentioning was Ichigos true Shikai and true Bankai, which were only in the manga as the anime was no longer in production. So this was one of the first times this form would be animated, only seen offically later in Jump Force and then the current anime continuation

I completely agree with everything you said about Metal Sonic vs. Zero. It's especially painful for me, though, cause that was my absolute MOST wanted matchup when it came out. So, seeing it turn out so... Metal Sonic vs. Zero made me drop the show for a few months back when it dropped. It’s weird. I some how like Metal Sonic VS Zero than a good amount of episodes in Season 4. I honestly don’t know why. The Sound design doesn’t really bother me since it gives off a retro vibe to me, the 3D Close ups aren’t that bad since I do like how some of them are animated, and overall, it’s a fun episode to me. Probably my biggest hot take of all Death Battle, but I think it’s good. I would take it over than Smokey VS McGruff, Lucario VS Renamon, Lara VS Nathan, and ESPECIALLY Venom VS Bane. But then again Opinions are Opinions. I just wanted to get this out of the way because I usually hear it’s a bad episode. And while I understand why people believe it, it’s the fact I hear the constant issues over and over and it just got old to me. But I do appreciate Jonathan going actually in depth with the episode and talk about it’s entirety.

I think that it's simply because Bi-Han's MK3 design closely resembles Kuai Liang's MK2 design and Kuai Liang's MK2 design is more iconic and recognisable than his MK3 design and can be better used to convey Kuai in his entirety as a character, whereas Kuai's MK3 design depicts him in a very specifoc part of his life. And an MK3 sprite was chosen over an MK2 sprite possibly because of the bigger moveset and better graphical detail and fidelity.

Sub-Zero vs Ryu only makes sense when you consider it next to Scorpion vs Ken. And yeah, it's still a fighting game rivalry there, but now you look at it as a "fighting game *character archetype*" matchup. Ryu and Ken are your starter characters in a Street Fighter game. They don't excell anywhere usually, but they're a jack of all trades meant to teach you the fundamentals of the game. Scorpion and Sub-Zero to a similar extent fulfill this role in Mortal Kombat. (Less so in MK12 now but that's not quite relevant at the time of this season) Ryu, Ken, Scorpion, and Sub-Zero (also Terry and probably a few other fighting game characters) all fall into the category of a "shoto". Story wise, Ryu vs Scorpion makes sense because it's two guys with a similar goal but taking different paths. Scorpion was all about revenge and vengeance and taking it out directly. Ryu wanted payback against Akuma and Bison but ultimately solved that with peace within himself. Scorpion eventually does too but that's, again, after the matchup. This is less important with a Ryu vs Sub-Zero match considering there's like 3 Sub-Zeros and none of them story wise really match to Ryu, especially at the period of time this season was happening. (Again, MK12 adds to this matchup) Edit: On Lucario vs Renamon, yes, there is evidence to Digimon evolving on their own. This is due to the entire nature of the Digital World being survival of the fittest. Consume more data to get stronger and reach a higher form. Natural Digivolution in this state is /usually/ permanent, and a Digimon will only devolve if close to death or some other grievous wound. Digivolution via a partner is somewhat more powerful because of the bond, but also means it lasts way less time due to the nature of the evolution being artificially triggered instead of a natural growth. Mega Pokemon in the wild is just.. eh? I guess in Pokemon universe it *could* happen, but you'd just end up with a berserker Pokemon liable to self destruct under the energy. Smash in this case is really not a viable source. Mewtwo did it, in a movie, and before we even knew it was Mega Evolution, and so should be discounted. Ergo, this logic for Lucario doesn't really track.

Mecha shows have a track record of not being listed on streaming services due to them being more of a niche genre compared to shonens and isekais these days. 1:17:41 As someone who has watched Bleach, I'll help explain "Mugestu" Ichigo. "Mugestu" or "Final Getsuga Tenshou" is a form Ichigo has only used ONCE because for one simple reason: Ichigo LOSES his powers after he uses it. In the series, after using Mugestu, Ichigo lost his powers a few months later and had no way to get them back (until the end of the series but y'know!). So seeing him use this form (kind of at random, in my opinion) is super weird despite how cool it is. For me, it is cool, but it should've been saved for a better moment. Perhaps when both characters have no other options so they unleash attacks at the same time. But that's basically Mugestu in a nutshell.

narutos moveset is really limited. his entire moveset throughout the whole anime is just clones and rasenshurikens. which is why his attacks feel so repetitive in that deathbattle

It's nothing too deep. I just don't vibe with the gameplay and the animations make it less appealing to me. I also think that the fatalities have been actively hindering the narrative and are obnoxiously excessive for no reason, but that's also a personal thing.

As a SUPER Shovel Knight fan, I loved seeing SK in Death Battle, but the episode could've been done better. To answer a few things you were wondering, the guy who uses hats as a power was a based reference, Mr. Hat is a fun salesman character who obsesses with hats, to fill his collection and see what power they'd give him. Second, yeah, the whole SK being dumb was dumb, it was fair to assume that she died, she didn't but I won't spoil anything, but based on the story, it's very reasonable to assume at first she was dead. And third, yeah, SK was characterized weirdly, SK is all about being an honorable warrior and hero, so him stealing treasure from someone and fighting them like that is not like him, and no, he doesn't get hired by anyone, he's kind of his own adventurer with Shield Knight. I'd like to see him brought back and done better next time, as he's also gotten two new games with new feats, relics, and more, and other characters have gotten their own campaigns too, giving him comparable stats. Great video btw

@@MidnightPhantom yeah, Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon and Shovel Knight Dig. Pocket Dungeon is a puzzle rougelite with many modes, characters and challenges, while Dig is a 2D platformer rougelite that has you going downwards digging.

@@MidnightPhantom He can drop from super high distances without getting hurt, can dig miles underground without taking a break, was smart enough to figure out a puzzle that took a knight who's thing is puzzles couldn't figure out for years. He also has new relics and accessories, like the a rod that can freeze enemies solid temporarily, a locket that can turn him into a spirit for a few seconds to go through walls, rings that can make him immune to fire, electric, ice, explosion and wind attacks for one hit before it needs a 5 second cool down, can throw his Shovel like a boomerang, do a super Shovel drop that makes him go down faster and catch his Shovel on fire, and so many more I could type for 10 minutes.

Don’t really have much to say about the season funny enough. I am glad I am not the only one who likes the Venom vs Bane match up… too bad the episode wasn’t that good. Zero vs Metal Sonic in the other hand is a match up I never really was a fan of. I mean, if it was a sequel episode to Wily vs Eggman, then I think that would be cool but it really wasn’t and the episode ended up being crap anyways so I don’t even see the point of the episode in the first place. Meta Knight vs Zero when indeed. (Meta Knight vs Zero is my most wanted match up ever since Season 1)
