Ranking Every Episode of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Part 1: The "Worst"

I decided to rank all 61 episodes of my favorite TV show of all time, the CW's Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, co-created by Rachel Bloom and Aline Brosh McKenna. Which songs rise to the top, and which ones are "My Friend's Dad?" What plot points make me cry, and which ones are about Darryl's new baby Hebecca? And could you possibly guess that my favorite character is White Josh?

Please Please don't switch to talking to a camera instead of a voiceover. I love this style of a show video-essay, but when it's a person sitting there staring into the camera with occasional clips, I feel no desire to watch and it's so boring. Keep doing voiceovers please. Also thank you for pointing your phone at the TV for this, it was worth it and I enjoy the slight visual distortion on the screen because of why it's there.

Definitely agree that many of my least-favorite episodes are in season 4. The increase in episodes definitely makes it feel like there are some filler episodes. It's possible to love something as a whole, while also recognizing weak, silly, or even frustrating parts about it. I can't imagine trying to put all of these episodes in an order though....that's an impressive task.

Ok, so actually Nathaniel's romcom episode is my favourite in the whole series and the one i've probably watched the most. It's a great parody of the genre and the karaoke song is, for me, really on point and catchy. Though of course, Nathaniel beeing my favourite character may be the reason xd

Season 4 was largely full of misses for me. I wasn't really into bringing Greg back as a different actor and while I think they gave a neat in universe reason for it, Skylar's portrayal just doesn't work for me. I think -- in general -- my personal enjoyment of the series diminishes a bit with each subsequent season. My favorite is season 1 and that's where I feel like the writing is sharpest and the premise is working the best. Seasons 2 and 3 are just way too short and the development for each character happens way too quickly and inorganically because of it. I think all of the seasons would have benefited most from being about 16 episodes long tbh.

I think Skylar had the cadence down that Fontana had put into the character but the chemistry just wasn’t there. Fontana was irreplaceable and I wish they just would have never brought the character back. I was really Hoping to see him in the live performances and while I’m glad they didn’t have Skylar perform any of Fontana’s songs man it suffered cutting them out because his are some of my absolute favorites 😢

I appreciate the mini-analyses of each episode as you list them. I'm pretty bad at picking up the more subtle things the writers do, so I wind up looking at plotlines I didn't like very much with new eyes, and I think it makes your choices make sense.

Think you were unfair on "i want to be here". I think it was meant to show that taking accountability doesnt mean needlessly punishing yourself. Its meant to be centered around other people, not you. It falls a bit flat because its an intentional anti-climax in order to make a point, which allows you to feel what rebecca feels and mirrors the process of trying to grow as a toxic person. I really resonated with it when i first saw it, so i love this ep. I also think it is thematically relevant to rebeccas journey because she often focuses on self harm of some kind when she feels bad rather than helping others. So i think this anti climax was really clever and meaningful. I agree about "whats your story" though! Great video x

I absolutely agree! Each call back joke was hilarious, and they sometimes make me think that this show is about Rebecca looking back on the last few years of her life. It certainly explains why characters have numbers without her there

Gosh, ok, I'm on my period, so maybe that is why but I literally started to cry when you talked about "Getting Bi". I tried to hint my newly-discovered bisexuality to my friends but no one seemed to get it. I'm 36 and have been in an opposite-sex relationship all my life but in the last couple of months I have been slowly realizing that I am definitely attracted to women, too. I guess that some "older" bi-people may have grown up thinking that they were straight just because we did not have much bi role models in media. Looking back at some of my teenage friendships with girls I realize they we crushes. To sum up - we need such representation as Darryl! Edit: One of my aha! moments on the self-discovery journey was watching Donna Lynne in "His status is preferred", so yeah :D

I saw this video three times already, and one thing I realized that I haven't before is how White Josh is portrayed in the musical numbers. Rebecca didn't connect that much with him, and it's reflected in how awkward he looks. The only time it looks like effort was put into him was whenever he was beside one of the love interests. It really does support your theory on how Rebecca's imagination impacts the musical numbers

A lot of autistic cxg fans say that Rebecca is very clearly autistic coated. And as an obsessed fan myself, now I can't unsee it shining through her character. (eg. taking things literally, always the extreme action, very black and white thinking, hyperfixations on west covenia, lack of social ques etc) Curious about what you think?

That's really interesting! I'm not sure since I don't have a huge depth of knowledge about autistic traits or how autism compares to BPD with differences in thinking or behavior-- I'd love to hear from some other commenters about this!

BPD has comorbidities with ADHD 20%-40% of the time. ADHD has comorbidities with ASD ~90% of the time. It's very common for women to get a BPD misdiagnosis because feminine ASD/ADHD symptoms are extremely similar to BPD symptoms. Not to mention when CPTSD and ADHD/ASD mix, it looks absolutely similar to straight up BPD. I'm a diagnosed borderline who wonders if they have ADHD/ASD with CPTSD and hyper focuses on information gathering.

Pretty interesting to hear "What's your story" from another perspective. It shows Rebecca to be indeed out of touch of reality of these other women, and indeed makes Rebecca incredibly annoying after filling our hearts with love. This can feel this way if you have no complains about Rebecca till then on this topic. As a woman of color that came from generational poverty, I always found Rebecca annoying for how clueless she was about her class and racial privilege (remember how she used to talk to people who asked her for money on the street, a scene from earlier seasons? Her mocking response "I have money, i made it by working!") To me, it was satisfying to feel this addressed even if only 1% of the audience is smart enough to get it. To those who don't get it, there's a good call out that comes towards Rebecca from Valencia that explains what's wrong exactly with the behaviour that the Prison Tango is making fun of. It was satisfying to see, especially coming from Valencia. Got no other comments, just wanted to bring a perspective from a different social background. loved your video!

I actually really love the start of Season 4. I'm a big fan of the "realistic person reacts to sitcom shenanigans" trope. I feel like the judge's explanation of the end of Season 3 was really funny without taking from the impact of Rebecca's speech.

Great list. Something I noticed with The Group Mind Has Decided Your in Love is that the aspect ratio changes, which may be because of how the aspect ratios were for films of the day (not a film buff just a thought). But more importantly it narrows as it mimics the narrow-minded thinking the characters (and many audience members had) of White Josh and Darryl being together. I love that number even though I'll admit I wanted White Josh and Darryl to end up together.

While I agree with many of your observations, and even when I disagree still respect and understand your rankings, for "Oh, Nathaniel, It's On" - while Nathaniel definitely refused to rehire and also fired Rebecca because she dumped him, he does have a leg to stand on in that 1) she resigned and 2) even if she can prove her resignation was not her own idea nor was she in her right mind to make such a decision, she no-showed at work for a very long time. So even if Rebecca brought a wrongful termination suit (which would probably be the most logical action here), he could still probably prove that he had justification to fire her. Just nit-picking. Love your video (and also LOVE THIS SHOW!)

I keep bringing myself back to this video, because it's that good, and hence another comment. One thing I noticed about the episode with Rebecca's friends moving on is that they all went on to do things that Rebecca herself did at an earlier age, like moving across the country or pursuing a career. I'm glad it was her therapist that helped put things in perspective, but I can also see commentary on not comparing yourself to others, especially given how Rebecca already reached those milestones but was too myopic to notice.

I have a playlist with all of the songs, and I “Gratuitous Karaoke Song” is the only one I don’t have on it because it really doesn’t feel like a song and more like a pure gag. I even have “Duh” on there and I can’t stand that one.

I don't blame season 4 for being season 4. The middle of final seasons are often pretty rough. There's that weird point where you're sort of stuck halfway between ramping up to the ending, and trying to do business as usual, while also cramming in the pairings that haven't been done yet, trying to hit the highlights, wrap up smaller stories, tell a seasonal arc, it's a lot. I generally give final seasons a pass. The good ones are still good, but I feel like you have to relax your brain a little to enjoy them generally. And I don't have that hard a time doing that with CXGF because even though most of the best moments are behind, and the pacing and ideas just aren't as strong, it's still CXGF and it's still a wonderful show

I skipped out halfway through the second season. Most of the characters took turns I didn't like and Rebecca's personality and choices just became unbearable to watch. I started to feel bad for Donna Lynne Champlin for being trapped in the show. She was amazing.
