i feel like all of the other mystery dungeon games get overshadowed by explorers haha, i wish they all got more appreciation. i personally like the expedition society of super more than wigglytuff's guild because you're actually treated like equals with the other members and each member gets a little bit of focus in the story which helps to flesh them out more than the guild members of explorers. gates had a good story and good characters despite it's problems and i like the town management feature with the paradise. rescue team is just nostalgic and fun, and pretty challenging imo. i think they all deserve their own praises

I also prefer the Expedition Society. The guild is so big that most of its members get very little if any spotlight and end up being very forgettable. Plus, like you said, the Expedition Society actually treats you as equals while the guild has a jerkass second-in-command who takes away most of your pay on a daily basis, and their leader is a baby in an adult's body who just happens to be strong. The Expedition Society's smaller size means that each of its members gets more time to shine, and their boss is both amusing *and* competent, instead of a child who throws a tantrum out of not getting their favorite food.

Rescue Team DX does have Megas, better balancing, the reworked recruitment system, etc etc. However, the thing in the game I absolutely hate, is that you can not for whatever reason just do a simple lunge attack. You're only allowed to use a PP move.

Super Mystery dungeon is so slept on. First of all smd has the best partner in the series and you can fight me on that. you can tell He was supposed to be more fleshed out As a character then all the others. He starts off as a impish and somewhat mischievous child But you soon find out that despite him being kind of a troublemaker he cares deeply for everyone around him. so much so that he wants to start an expedition society to explore the world and help Pokémon. he’s A perfect representation of an energetic child wanting to explore the world and though he can sometimes get annoying he aspires to be a better and more reliable friend and you can see him slowly maturing throughout the game. don’t get me wrong I love the partner in Explorers of sky. he was my first one and he will always be very important to me and my love for mystery dungeon. from him being a scared crybaby and wanting to join a rescue team so that he can be a better And more reliable person. his bond with the main character was great as whenever they were near each other felt more motivated and like he could achieve his goals. but on a more emotional level I just seem to sympathize with the partner in smd more. there’s a point in the story where he feels like he’s nothing but a nuisance. he starts to distance himself from the main character because of this but when it came down to it he was the only other person willing to save another Pokémon‘s life. I feel like with this partner there was more depth added to him as a character Not just as your partner. Sorry i spent so long rambling about the partner i just love him so much. This games music is also Top tier. you have tracks like Fire island volcano The school Woods theme The Dark matters boss theme Lively town (ESPECIALLY lively town) Not to mention the partners theme is so Beautiful and criminality underrated. i damn near start crying whenever i listen to it. When i found out the Final bosses theme was a remix of the partners theme i lost it. It’s just so good 😭 This games Characters are Tied With explorers of sky For the best ones in the series. You got characters like archen and buezel who are badass as hell. mawile and Espurr (Literally the mvps At the end of the game) Ampharos Celebi and Jirachi Are Also goated Especialy amphros. and when they all team up with you to fight yeveltal That shit was peak easily top 10 Mystery dungeon moments ever. The three legendary beasts were all goated Especially entei He was badass every time he was on the screen. the nuzleaf Betrayal was a Fantastic plot twist and i can really go on Longer. The story Starts off as you being a regular Pokémon going through school life The school arc is fun and relaxing but the second you step outside the village and you get to lively town The story takes a drastic turn. people getting turn to Stone because of a Powerful threat that can turn several legendarys into stone forcing them to work together. at one point you literally get sent to Pokémon hell and are forced to work together with some enemies to escape And while you were escaping they’re talking about SACRIFICING you and your partner to fix the world. once dark matters defeated you get what is in my opinion The second saddest ending in the mystery dungeon series. in previous games you were sent to the Pokémon world so that you could save the world from a certain threat. once that threat has been removed your role is done and you’re sent back to the human world. in this game it’s the opposite. without you in the Pokémon world the world becomes unbalanced. instead it is your partner that ends up leaving at the end of after he reveals that he was mew the whole time The whole time you and your partner are crying with your partner saying he wishes you could have stayed together forever. this is one of two times I cried during the video game and you might think I’m exaggerating But it’s true. The only other game that had me like this was explorers of sky. Finally we’re at the games gameplay and although I said nothing but positive things about this game there’s really nothing new I can say about the gameplay that can’t already be said about all the other games. in fact this game‘s method of recruiting Pokémon might actually be my least favorite of the four. instead of the Pokémon links I would’ve much rather preferred explorers of sky‘s method or even the camps from the first game. The looplet system was very nice though i’ll give them that. overall I might sound very dramatic and I’m probably over stating how good this game is but I really think that this is one of the best Pokémon games ever made. in terms of i’d say this game is second best only to EOS

With how mediocre most remakes are these days, I had very low expectations going into Pokemon DX after putting so many hours into the OG games, and I was so blown away by how good it actually was. It genuinely felt like an improvement on all fronts with some amazing QOL additions. Being able to play as any party member during the main story was a game changer, and the fact your recruits earned XP alongside you even when they weren't actively in the party actually allowed you to strategize and bring different party members depending on the dungeon. That feature alone honestly makes it really hard to ever return to the OG mystery dungeon games.

I was grounded but I was completed hooked and HAD to finish the story only for my character to end up 'dieing' I turned off the DS (expecting credits afterwards) was heart broken for like 2 days and couldn't tell anyone why. Got my DS back, played it through and was SO happy for the story to continue

From a personal level, I see Explorers of Sky as my favourite game of all time because of its rather intense story for a Pokémon game, incredible pixel art style and music and a fun gameplay loop that doesn’t get boring overtime. From a more critical lens though, I’d have to call Rescue Team DX the better game since I think it has the best gameplay in the series, which is what I prioritise when judging video games, along with it having one of the most beautiful 3D art styles I’ve ever seen. So speaking purely from my heart, a PMD2 remake with the exact same gameplay and design as DX (maybe minus the forced autosave and random crashes in longer dungeons) would be the perfect game for me.

Super mystery dungeon is my fav in the franchise respects the veterans and fans a like it ended with a bang and honestly gave me lots of memorable characthers and the recruitment was better because we now recruit characthers with actual personality in your party but you can still get your blank slate enemys pokemon in dungeons to name them best of both worlds and oh the ost is just beautiful and the bosses where great sky is my second fav but super did so much right as well adding lots of dungeons the dificulty was hard but forgiving

Gates is by far the worst - Less engaging and felt small. - Dungeon visibility limited to like 3 or 4 tiles ahead instead of like 10. - Much less playable character options. - Limited to ONE quest per dungeon and can't leave the area when u have gate open. - It's the 1st game to introduce the 5 damage basic attack so I'll give that a negative too. I can really go on how bad Gates was its on a whole lower tier or 2 on its own.

This is my ranking: 1. Explorers of Sky 2. Gates to Infinity 3. Red/Blue Rescue Team 4. Super MD Sky being my number one is pretty obvious. Gameplay-wise, it’s my absolute favorite of the whole bunch. While the Rescue Team games were interesting but clunky, Sky (and Time/Darkness) streamlined a LOT to make the gameplay loop as enjoyable as it’s ever been for me. The story is great; it splits the mid to late narrative pseudo climax present in all Mystery Dungeon games between Fogbound Lake and the trip to the future, before buckling up for the final adventure. The soundtrack is great, the writing is tight if a bit simple. My only gripes are the constant flashbacks to scenes from two seconds ago, the over-interpreting your partner does and the guild not being quite as important as I assumed they would be. And this comes with a heavy side of nostalgia from me. This one’s controversial, but yeah, upon recent replay, Gates is my second favorite PMD game. It’s story rivals Sky in my opinion, despite the weird push and pull of lots of plot events happening all at once and then dead spots for in game days at a time. But once it gets going (Umbreon shows up, pretty much), it’s super enjoyable. I actually hated Gates as a kid and was contemplating selling the game, but I don’t know what the heck I was thinking. Gates was the first time PMD did a physical manifestation of negative emotions, and I think it did it best the first time around. Words can’t express how amazed I was with the frisms, or how hype Keldeo’s records were. It’s sometimes heavy-handed, but it’s also a kid’s game so it gets a pass. The gameplay is fun; a step down from Sky, but removing the hunger system and making the dungeons much more like tunnels with tiny rooms connected to them every once in a while was really fun. The soundtrack was beautiful, aside from the fact that there are a few reused dungeon themes. They’re great, but not having individual themes for every dungeon was a massive downgrade. This one’s anti-nostalgia, and it managed to come out on top for me. The Rescue Team games come next. I lump DX in with them for the most part, since I’m actually not a huge fan of the gameplay of either. The original is fine, but rough. Sky did a lot of cleaning up for sure. DX shares a lot of issues with Super, like pushing your teammates and enemies automatically, having too-big rooms and too-small hallways and more. Their stories are identical, in that they’re fairly slice of life until the Ninetales rumor gets out and you and your partner are on the run before Groudon shows up and then the climax happens. The soundtrack is nice, I prefer the crunchy GBA music better because I’m a sucker for that old synthesized machine singing. The first PMD game (Blue Rescue Team) I ever actually beat, but not enough to hold out in first place. Finally, another controversial pick, Super in last. I loved Super when it came out. Everyone was praising it as a return to form for PMD after the travesty of Gates but it collected a lot of dust after my initial play-through of it. I picked it back up a little before I replayed Gates recently, and wow, I did not like it very much at all. Super and the Rescue games do this thing where they set up these mysterious things that are happening across the world, then don’t bring them up for hours, and then suddenly have them become relevant again at least halfway through the game. Rescue Team does this with the natural disasters, and Super does this with the pokemon turning to stone. You could argue Sky and Gates are also guilty of this, but they show the rise of dark-hearted pokemon through personal experience (Drowzee and Gurdurr). The first half of the game is a giant tutorial where you’re forced to attend an early (K-2nd grade or so, if I had to guess) grade school, the partner is lonely and sad yet simultaneously an obnoxious brat who doesn’t care about anything besides adventure (to your own detriment) and like another comment pointed out, the player character has zero agency in the story. This isn’t your story - they try and make you think it is, with the Beheeyem, but that plot point wraps back around to the main plot, which is the partner’s story through and through. Most of the side characters are gimmicky, and not in the charming way the guild members were, but to an enraging degree. Why should I care about Swirlix turning to stone? All he cares about is eating everyone’s food and literally nothing else. I could go on, but to summarize; the opening is too long and tutorial-ridden, I don’t care about the partner when I should, I have no agency in the story as the player, the plot is generally unfocused and paced poorly - oh, and there’s plot-holes galore. The big amnesia plot-hole is the worst by far and actively ruined the story for me even back when I played it the first time. Just… really sloppy all around. The gameplay isn’t fun to me, it’s frustrating. It’s not egregious, of course, but Super is clearly operating out of the same gameplay structure as Gates with one massive change. The rooms are huge and the hallways are usually really small. This is fine on it’s own - Rescue and Sky both did this and were fine - but the game is balanced around Gates’ approach. Pokemon easily overwhelm you when it’s almost all rooms, whereas you can position them and strategize better with the long hallways of Gates. Most of my fainting in dungeons was from bad luck and having too many pokemon all in one room, usually with long-range moves to kill me from afar. It gets better as you go along, but around the time you and your partner leave the village was peak frustration for me. The soundtrack is good. I’m not crazy about most of the tracks, but they’re all a good listen and well-composed. I was surprised to find the roles reversed between Super and Gates, but some time has drastically shifted my opinions on both.

I’m weird. My ranking is as such: 1. PSMD 2. RRT/BRT 3. EoT/D/S 4. GTI 5. Adventure Squad Explanation (spoiler warning): Super-I like the story the best out of all these games. I really like how your partner is written with a clearly defined personality besides “wants to help people,” and they go through a clear arc alongside you. It’s very obvious that the story is about them, not you or your role. All of the other characters are well written, too-the village kids especially, but also the village adults and the Expedition Society. I got really attached to the group of misfits I went to school with. I’m also a big fan of the Looplet/Emera system…Barrage is busted. Also…I’m a Gen 6 kid. Got into the series in 2016, so… Rescue Team-This game has, imo, the worst written partner and story. Your partner has no personality or depth, and the story is poorly paced, shallow, and full of missed opportunities. Coming off of the last explanation, this may not make any sense-but vibes are powerful, and this game is strong in them. The gameplay isn’t super easy to work with-items can’t be used on your teammates without giving them to them, no physical/special split, Spite (tell me I’m not the only one who absolutely abhors Shuppet because of Sky Tower), etc. But I’ll go straight to the bottom of hell if I don’t love me some X-ray specs. I love the spritework, too, even though it’s mostly the same as Explorers (real ones know that chunkier is better, and lower graphic quality means more chunk). I actually enjoyed the weird story pacing because it really entrenched in my experience that I was a rescuer. It was my job to do rescues, and I had to do that every day, even if I’d rather be fighting Groudon at the moment. This wasn’t even my first Mystery Dungeon game, so nostalgia doesn’t have a lot of influence. That game was Explorers (of Sky)-I didn’t know too much about Mystery Dungeon when I started playing this game. I knew what it was, I’d watched a couple playthroughs, but I was altogether inexperienced. I LOVED going through Beach Cave. The simplicity of just…learning how to play. I’ll never forget that (song flashbacks lol). Your partner has an arc in this game, and it’s obvious the devs put some effort into the story. It is…immaculate. From the storm at sea to the return on the beach, very few flaws and the ones that are present can be easily overlooked. The one critique I have is maybe the devs could have extended your partner’s arc a little-maybe past the Future part, and maybe dealing a little with it right before Temporal Tower could have been valuable. As it is, your partner gets over their fear problem right after you get through Waterfall Cave, or if you wanna be generous, after Fogbound Lake. As for gameplay, massive improvement over Rescue Team…because it has Imprison AND Whiffer Smokescreen (iykyk (but most people here do so)). Items can now be used on your teammates without swapping their held items, and the IQ system has been vastly improved with the addition of Spinda’s Cafe in Sky (although it’s not perfect and never will be). Physical/special split doesn’t really matter for your own character because their stats are so high that either will do about the same amount of damage, but at the very least it’s nice that my boi Shinx doesn’t have to rely on special STAB moves the whole game. Overall, great game but not chunky enough. Gates-I actually like Gates quite a lot, which I guess says more about the series than the game itself. It is pretty securely the worst game in the series, but that doesn’t mean it has no redeeming qualities. To start with, 3D graphics! Yay! But Super did them better, so it doesn’t count. Instead, let’s talk about…music! To be very clear, all of these games have incredible soundtracks. But…Gates might have my favorite. I could talk all day about how I love Holehills (5/4 time signature, amazing harmonies, thematic fit, you get the idea), but I’ve probably already done that on the actual song, so I’ll just praise the whole OST. The beginning songs, like, the first 5 or so on the soundtrack, all have the Hope leitmotif hidden somewhere, and leitmotifs are absolute juggernauts of game music. The other big one in this game is Desperation (or Despair, it’s the same thing). Each is interposed in the soundtrack at relevant times to add a punch of familiarity to augment the moment and connect similar elements across the plot. And then there’s the farewell. There are, like, 12 individual tracks for this scene, each one roughly as good as the last, building to the climax in The Frism, which is kind of like a mix of the themes of Hope and Despair and it’s just perfect (not really but close). There are so many good tracks-Withered Savannah, Come on in to Post Town, Sympathy and Sincerity, SKYDIVING (?? how), Crags of Lament, Inflora Forest, the Magnagate dungeon suite…I could go on. Unfortunately, the plot doesn’t really live up to the soundtrack. It’s similar to Rescue Team in that it builds to the climax at the Glacier Palace…and then you go back to being a team for a hot second. Every Mystery Dungeon game has a sort of middle climax-Mt. Freeze and the Legend of Ninetales in Rescue Team, Fogbound Lake in Explorers, the first Glacier visit in Gates, and less so in Super, but there are a couple small ones (i. e. Ancient Barrow, departure from Serene Village, and the whole Entei thing). Gates has another one, though, at the Holehills-although this turns more into a darkest hour type thing. The thing is, the energy level across the story spikes in several places with really low action in others. This is common in a lot of games, but Gates emphasizes it really weirdly and it doesn’t really work. We could analyze the flaws in Gates’ writing for days, though, so…Gameplay is fun. The introduction of the Team Attack foreshadows Alliances in a small way, but the bigger issue is the ability to use orbs in boss fights for the first time in the series. This changes the game immensely, because you can just bring an All-Mach Orb and an Evasion Orb and there’s very little any of the bosses can do to you. The devs knew this would make the game easier, though, so they made all the boss fights hoard battles (Okay, not all of them. Kyurem, the Bittercold, and that one against Gurdurr and that’s about it). This isn’t a novelty for the series, but most of the Mystery Dungeon games have mainly single opponent boss fights, and Gates doesn’t. I liked it, though, so bite me. Adventure Squad-ima be honest, I don’t know anything about these games except they were Japan exclusive, there were three, they had the visual style of Pokemon Rumble, and they had much less actual story than the other games in the series. Also you weren’t a human. I’d still like to play them someday, though. A note on Rescue Team DX-I love the visual style and the updated move sets for the starter mons. The adjustment of the main Kec shop to have actually useful TMs all the time is awesome too, as is the ability to freely switch your leader FROM THE SECOND DUNGEON IN THE GAME ON and being able to take more than four mons in a team. Wands, updated gummis and the addition of rare qualities, Oddity Cave, dojo tickets, the starter selection system from Super (quiz that you can overwrite), even the Diglett tunnel to the Pelipper Post Office, the quality of life improvements here are through the roof. They should have gone with Alolan Ninetales, though (you can’t convince me it wouldn’t fit better). Tl;dr: Well, for one, I don’t blame you. Basically, I like all the PMD games, but I like Super’s story the best. Also I prefer chunky, Gates is weird (good music tho), I’ve never played the Wiiware games, and DX is great.

Idk but super mystery dungeon has me hooked! I played blue mystery dungeon and explorers of sky. But for some reason SMD and the emeras made the game always refreshing and even made me want to 100% it

GTI is super slow with the plot and dialogue you can only take one job per day The limited selection of starters and Pokemon in game was mainly gen 5 The story was lame tbh Post game was locked behind a paywall

While the rescue team remake added a lot I enjoyed, I really didn’t like what they took away, especially being able to go into the friend areas, which was most of my incentive to keep playing the original. Also didn’t like that they took away the neutral attack, and iirc having a set projectile also changed. I’d say if you can, still try and give Blue Rescue Team a shot over the remake.

I’ve replayed explorers of sky so many times and haven’t got sick of it. It’s also one of the few games that’s made me cry, got so connected to the game. Definitely one of the best of all time imo

12:36 I see how it is, praising the OST of that game but not even acknowledging or even mentioning the OST of Super is blasphemy and that automatically makes this vid not relevant, sorry but the Super OST is by far the best PMD one. Best example is the theme of the Sand Dune of Spirits compared to the Great Canyon. Both remixes of the og Great Canyon but Supers is just leagues better. I really don’t like the DX remake OST, that every theme has the old GBA sounds in it just does nothing for me, I want grand and amazing music like in Super and Gates. Or another way is would they have done it like in ORAS that would also have been nice. Like the Primal Reversion Battle theme there is one of the best in the game because it is a one and only callback with GBA sounds thrown in in some parts while the rest sounds bombastic and epic. The rest of the OST meanwhile was made on XY Standards which is they way to go. So yeah I like remakes that remake the music in a good way, not just nostalgia pandering. Xenoblade DE, Mario RPG, Paper Mario TTYD, the Mario Kart 8 remake courses, Legends Arceus, Fire Emblem Echoes, Pokemon Masters and Links Awakening are other games that do their remaked music justice.

Lets be totally Honest, the only reason we saw people camplaining about Gates is because it doesnt have all pokemons they want and simplifies the main mechanics of the game. But if you take your time, as i did, youd notice that the main reasonn we as fans love this spin offs, the story i mean, is the second bext, or even the best depending of you, of the series. The first game has a simple world and story, but also feels pretty random with stuff such as Gardevoir as some kind of spirit when she never was that. The last game, Super Mistery, feels more like a Rescue team 2.0 wich means it enhances the world and narrative but still has painfill pace wich doesnt work if all characters arent that complex to begin with, charming of course but not that deep to take too much time before the first twist. An between Gates and Explorers, many people doesnt eeven played Gates and you have them complaining, absurd i would say. Gates has the most human narrative showing you flawed side characters with conflicts, fears and redemption arcs. Something that Explorers lacks pretty much, but of course Explorers has the best companion of all series with a huge character developement. But you have to consider that in Explorers we never know about the side characters in the town during actual gameplay, they just... exist, and maybe have some funny interction but just tgat. Also, being a game foe the 2000s Grovyle is kinda a edgyboy with a mysterious past and a mental breakdown in the middle. And even though it feels into character, being honest he doesnt have a huge range of emotions as other characters in the same vibe like Jak or Spyro in the 200s. So we could say Explorers has what Gates doesnt and Gates has what Explorers doesnt. While Explorers is more like an epic story with hitting hard scenes to impact whoever play them, Gates is more human and calming focusing more on more grounded characters and reflexive momments-

PMD is my favourite of the Mystery Dungeon series but if you enjoy the format I always recommend Shinen the Wanderer as well, same team, same game style, with a feudal Japanese, Yokai heavy aesthetic.

The only pokemon storytelling that comes close to the pokemon mystery dungeon series is the two colosseum games, which are also spin offs. That's also not counting the many fan games and rom hacks that can do better.

Explorers of Sky adds a new shop in town, a new dungeon in the post-game with it's own short narrative and, most importantly, it adds 5 Special Episodes which you unlock through the game. These Special Episodes tell a story from the perspective of another character, oftentimes expanding upon their backstory. The fifth Special Episode in particular is told from the perspective of Grovyle and is an absolutely must-play if you liked the story of the main game.

@@savitarr1162 Physical copies of Explorers of Sky stopped being produced some time ago and the game still is relatively popular, so buying a physical copy is very expensive and unfortunately there is no legal way to adquire a digital copy. I played EoS through a PC emulator myself and I can say that I very much enjoyed the extra content it added, especially the Special Episodes. I very much recomend playing through Sky over Time/Darkness, so either pay the price to buy an official version if you can afford it or emulate it is my advice. I hope that helps.

@@savitarr1162Imo you’re fine. The base and post game is still the same, and there’s not enough different to make it worth paying for Sky. If you were looking without Darkness, I’d obviously recommend Sky, but since you have Darkness, it’ll be mostly the same experience, only missing the special episodes and Spinda’s Cafe, which is tertiary anyway. The biggest difference is there are more starters available in Sky, some of which are kinda fun to play as, so if you wanna be Phanpy, Shinx, Riolu, Vulpix, or Eevee (most of which are, like, the PMD starter poster children (rip Phanpy)), you’ll need to get Sky somehow.

I couldn't stand Super Mystery Dungeon, you had to find an item to save your game! And the difficulty was way too hard, you had to grind so much and basically just fill your bag with reviver seeds and you couldn't even go to Pokémon square despite going to the same area!

Only one complain about Super: No board missions, only missions given by an orb with specific Pokemon giving you one specific mission to then unlock another part of the branch allowing you to recruit this Pokemon at 100% if you complete the mission. This system isn't that bad since it guarantee to recruit the Pokemon at 100% and also introduce nice references like having Wigglytuff being the one of Sky and unlocking mission for Chatot and Chatot giving link to all Guild members, even Team Skull is there. But more cons than pro since you can't really decide the mission, some of them are insanely painfully hard and worst, you can't replay them, meaning once done, you have nothing to do, it's a downgrade in term of replayability since the main point of all Explorers was that the game doesn't really end. Even Infinity have the board mission, so that's why for me I will place Super last and Infinity 4th (oh and Infinity get rid of the belly and hunger mechanic, personally I hated it because I don't have time to carry 50 apple in my bag at least it only applies to your character, in Sky I have the IQ ability that fill the belly more no matter what I eat while in DX I simply have the ribbon that completely removes it). I completely agree with the rest of the ranking however, I'm still playing Sky to this day on my DS, doing dungeon with my level 100 Lucario and Ninetail, I also play DX but if I have to choose only one, I will definetely pic Sky. That's my taste and choices, please respect them ^^

I have a personal grudge with skunkkank they successfully made child me hate him.
