It feels like you're really in a sword fight, your reactions and decisions have to be pinpoint and each and every boss fight gets the blood pumping. Speaking from my own experiences I'd find two or three mechanics in souls I'd rince and repeat for my entire playthrough, sekiro had me using 5/6 on most bosses. The world was phenomenal too, the right shade of light and dark throughout

My ranking worst to best. 6) Demon Souls. It's the game that started it all and it was the last game in the series I played, even after Sekiro. The graphics and atmosphere are good, but I hate the level designs and the enemy designs don't look that great. Their placements are really annoying too, I never beat this game. I might try it one more time before I retire it from memory. 5) Dark Souls 2-- I hated it for a long time, but once I tried the dual wielding build I became a badass. Just gotta say there's parts of this game that sucked so bad, I won't be playing it again. Also, a T rating? I prefer the visceral blood of the other games. I did have more fun playing this than Demon Souls. 4.) Dark Souls 3-- I really liked the graphics, enemy designs, the placements were pretty good, the bosses were the best part. I didn't like a few of the locations, like one of the dungeons, the catacombs, I wasn't a huge fan of the bog either but I liked that better than Catacombs. 3.) Shadows Die Twice. Beautiful game and one of the hardest final bosses in a game I've ever played period. Beating it gave me a rush none of the other games came close to. I'd say I like Dark Souls 3 more, but I liked the level design in Sekiro much more while I slightly preferred combat in DS3. 2.) Dark Souls Remastered. This is just the ultimate adventure game in my opinion, in my mind this is what I wanted combat in Zelda games to be like when I was younger and playing the games with 3 hearts to make them harder. This game has some incredible bosses, amazing sights, and all my least favorite parts are skippable or cheesy. Blighttown? Use the master key! Bell gargoyles? Firebombs! Ornstein and Smough? Solaire of Astoria! The level design is my favorite of all medieval fantasy games. I like the armors, the weapons, the weight, I've beaten this one four times. 1.) Bloodborne. It was my first Fromsoft game and man did it kick my ass until I started kicking back. This is the one game where I can remember how bad I used to be, pop it in and be like "damn, I got good." I've beaten this game over a dozen times, even tried casual speedrunning and beat the game from a fresh character in 6 hours. I'll never play the chalice dungeons again, period. But it's nice having the platinum. Before this game came out, my favorite game was RE4. This game basically had everything I liked about RE4 without the guns which sounds weird but it's true. It had the gruesome monstrosities, the horror atmosphere, tense and gripping combat. Playing through Yharnam always reminds me of the village in RE4, just compare both ganes villagers side by side, how they point and mock the player, welding torches and pitchforks, the forest even has ones with exploding heads which reminded me of the parasites. This is my favorite game ever, over 300 hours into it and I still wanna do "one more run."

@Thegoodhunter96 They improved a lot. 1. There's omnidirectional rolling like in Dark Souls 3. 2. Backstab and Ripostes animations are different for most different types of weapons and much better/brutal all around. Also the world tendency adds a lot to the game IMO. @@josueh5831 true, aremis and the dlc are incredibly designed areas. I actually read somewhere that the painted world was one of the earlier areas to be developed, which makes since as the level design is so tight and well thought-out. but I don't consider them as part of the second half of the game when you are hunting down the lord souls. areas like the catacombs, tomb of the giants, dukes archive and crystal cave are a bit linear compared to the first half of the game, and enemy variety is lacking. each area is limited to a few key enemies. I do like new londo though, that area is full of shortcuts and opens up a path to the darkroot basin bonfire through valley of the drakes. but I personally cannot stand tomb of the giants and the crystal cave. they are linear sprints to the boss and are severely lacking in enemy design.

Just finished Dark Souls 1 for the first time today. To say it’s perfect would be foolish. It does have many issues in level design in the late game and it’s very alienating when not explaining key mechanics very well like back stabs, parries, or the humanity system. Maybe it’s just me but the game felt a little bloated with choices however that could just be my inexperience with western rpgs talking. However the world building and achievement you get for beating tough moments is so rewarding that I totally understand it’s masterpiece status. It’s a shame the other games don’t follow that interconnected world building style so much. Anyways my 2 cents here is turning into a whole dollar bill so I’ll just say that I’m excited to play Dark Souls 3 next and hopefully I’ll get a PS5 on sale next year to play bloodborne and Demon Souls. Your comments on DS2 really encapsulated why I love it so much. Such a melancholy tone throughout, and the lack of hyperfixation on DS1's lore in comparison to DS3 made it feel like ages had passed. The old gods were forgotten, reincarnated, and forgotten again. Scholars can only recount barely remembered legends of lands we knew were once great, such as Catarina. And the ending with Aldia, where you've only managed a *treatment* for the curse, yet unsure of what may be coming, choose to forsake the cycle to seek a true cure? Great touch.

A lot of the time it seemed way beyond me, as I wasn't used to the hardcore gameplay aspect. I won't lie that I sought out "guidance". But it was also one of the most memorable gaming experiences ever, and felt like a real accomplishment. I think about it all the time. After a while I tried DS1, and got a ways into it before burning out I guess. I was enjoying it, but struggling more than I thought I would. The fast paced combat of Sekhiro was something I got used to, and the slower combat of DS was difficult to adjust to. I'm guessing it would have been better to start with DS. Anyway. Personally I don't agree with your list, and that's fine. However if you don't like Dark Souls 1 as much as the others because its "challenging in the unfair kind of way" I don't think you truly understand what the spirit of souls-borne games hold in general. The gameplay can call for what may be "unfair" as with the Tomb of Giants as there is limited vision, multiple enemies, and difficult terrain. But there are mechanics to overcome this, such as holding a light but losing your shield or continuing to suicide to learn the layout of the area. However the beauty of this is that areas such as this are always difficult and offer greater replayability as of such.
@bruhder58544 жыл бұрын
I honestly don't necessarily agree with either. To me, ds 1 had some major gripes that made me not finish it multiple times. I'd play it upto to a point with a build and drop it. The reason would boil down to these things: 1. Lack of trinkets/chunks. Compared to the successors, ds 1 had a very low amount of upgrade items that you could get without grinding which put me away from trying out different combinations of weapons. You're always forced to have a build in mind with the specific weapon before you start the game. Otherwise it'll just punish you for experimenting. 2. Some sections definitely have issues. Bed of chaos, ceaseless discharge, the catacombs, etc. I appreciate the game trying out different stuff and the variety of atmosphere it gives but yeah it could've been implemented a lot better. 3. The combat just didn't age well imo. Compared to the successors where they refined it so well, ds 1 combat feels janky at to the point where it can be unfun.

I played Sekiro next and it's not in my all-time list, but still loved it. I'm roughly 40% through Dark Souls now and enjoying it, but not as much as I had hoped. For me Sekiro is the easiest if you've played all the games multiple times. On a first playthrough basis though, I would say sekiro is the hardest. I thin DS3 gets too much dislike and criticism from the community, especially hardcore fans. I think the exact opposite, but probably bc my first souls game was DS3. But when I played 2 and 1 afterwards, I was greatly underwhelmed. They are good games, but they just lacked that extra spice that really made DS3 awesome. A gritty, grey and depressing atmosphere, yet still many different and sometimes even beautyful landscapes; lots of hidden items and things to explore. Very detailed and well-created areas that even outclass Bloodborne in my opinion - the abandoned cemetry of ash, then the weathering hights of the Lothric wall, discovering the secrets of the Undead Settlement and the stunning, yet frightening beauty of Irythill were all refreshing and a different experience. No bright colors and cartoon-like ligting like in Dark Souls 2. Also the enemies felt more unique and creative in 3. Finally FromSoftware took the bravery to break up with the usual zombie and dragon creatures. While there are some cliché monsters like hollows, skeletons and dragons, we also have the wretch, the monstrosity of sin, sewer centipede, deep accursed and many more horrifying and creepy-creative creature designs that all shiine from unique ideas. The entire combat system is fast and intense. After playing DS3, DS1 and 2 can feel like you're playing as a 60 year old struggling with every single sword swing. In DS3, you also have a much boarder weapon roster and a ton of options for infusion and builds - and they're actually viable in both PvP and PvE - there are many possibilities to go, and the multiplayer combat doesn't centered around a single build or dumb mechanic like backstab. I think DS3 came closest to a good (still flawed) multiplayer experience from all FromSoft games. And while may people say "Dark Souls is not a multiplayer game", and that's perfectly true, all games have multiplayer features, and in that area, not even Bloodborne can come close to DS3, which still has an active multiplayer community in 2021. In comparission, DSR took a little more than 6 months to almost completely die, because tha mulitplayer system is centered around two things: heavy armor and backstabbing the enemy's two meter wide hitbox. And lastly, the bosses. DS3 has the highest quality bosses out of the trilogy. Many different phases, epic entrances and even the weaker and easier ones had that special, memorable and frightening atmosphere, like Vordt or the Deacons. The music plays a huge part in it, of course, which is uniquely designes for every single boss encounter to fit the mood of the battle - not just a few boss tracks recycled over and over again (looking at you, DS2). Also the bosses actually feel like bosses. They have epic attacks, loads of different combat moves and sometimes they come with a whole arsenal of destructive weapons, like the Soul of Cinder. In DS1 and 2, most bosses are just simple enemies with 5-6 moves and a healthbar. Even some basic DS3 mobs like Lothric knights can have a more versatile moveset than some bosses from DS1. I always felt like DS3 is more of a direct sequel to 1, than 2 - and not just a sequel, but an entire amplified version. Everything DS1 had, DS3 also has it, just better. Abyss Watchers are a much bigger adrenaline rush than Artorias; Oceiros is a more creepy Seath; Midir is a much higher level of challenge than Kalameet; and the Soul of Cinder outclasses the ridiculously easy Gwyn bossfight in every possible way. I don't want to dash on DS1 too much, since 2010 was a long time ago, and tehcnical limitation didn't made today's extremes possible then, and also I enjoyed the game still - but the horribly simple remastered version didn't made the entire world better in any way, and that game suprassed DS3 with two years. After that, I can't say DS1 is better than 3 with an honest face.

Great video. While our lists dont match, i could understand your reasonings. One thing stuck out to me, though. When you said that vendricks reveal in ds2 was a moment that ds1 couldnt top. I find that strange, because ds1 literally did the same thing first with Gwyn. Vendricks reveal was almost the exact same as Gwyns reveal
@JohnnyVector4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! I guess the moment didn't hit me with Gwyn because he comes rushing out so fast and is kinda tough if you're not ready for him. The piano music helps to create a strange atmosphere but I didn't really take stock of his degraded appearance fully either at the time. I think that's why it didn't hit me as hard.

Great video dude, you thoroughly explained the placement of each game so well, and gave each the credit they deserved. Bloodbourne is the "souls formula" at it's best in my opinion. Unlike any other soulsborne title, each and every weapon was a gateway to a whole new style of play, while all simultaneously pushing the player toward that lightning quick combat style you mentioned. Bloodbourne placed a massive emphasis on quality over quantity, giving each weapon layers upon layers of unique attacks and options, rather than simply identical movesets with higher numbers. I felt like an entire playthrough could be devoted to 2 weapons, and would still leave room for mastery after the credits rolled. 11/10, couldn't agree more. Personally, I would switch Dark Souls 1 and 3 around though. I've played the hell out of both games, but something DS1 always does right for me is that it really feels like a gruelling, insurmountable adventure. Maybe it's the lack of warping initially, or the interconnectivity of the world, but I just don't get that same feeling with DS3. It's a close call though, Dark Souls 3 undoubtedly boasts the greatest boss fights and the widest range of customization, but Dark Souls just never seems to lose that first-time magic for me. Again, excellent video!

My ranking is: 1. Dark Souls 2. Dark Souls 3 3. Sekiro (i think sekiro is better than 3 overall but the lack of replay value for me pushes 3 above it) 4. Bloodborne 5. Dark Souls 2 Don't have a ps3 for demons souls

@@JohnnyVector I don't see what everyone else sees in bloodborne. I think it's a very good game but nothing about it blows me away like the heights of dark souls 1 and it doesn't have the boss quality of dark souls 3 or sekiro. I played it last and it was so hyped up and I was really let down

@@muhammadzariff7075 Certainly part of it. I just don't find the game nearly as enjoyable or interesting to me as the others (except ds2 which sucks). I thought maybe it would be fatigue from the series or something but I just played demons souls recently and loved it. The combat in bloodborne just isn't my style and I really don't like any of the base game bosses either

I agree with you. I’ve recently finished Bloodborne and now I’m playing Dark Souls Remastered. Well I really hated the fact that in Bb you literally had to farm the blood vials and how the gameplay forces you to play. I just feel like DS1 has something more special to offer. Also the level design here is stunning. Furthermore the camera in Bb just sucks, it feels more outdated than DS1

Dsrk souls 3: best lore Bloodborne: best designed Sekuro: best gameplay
@geraltofrivia74484 жыл бұрын
@Dutch Plan Der Linde it seems to me you prefer bloodborne, and thus your opinion is biased From a logical point of view, dark souls 3 has the best lore, as it was built upon the course of 3 games, and it's much bigger in terms of scale, complexity and importance Bloodborne has the best design, as it's areas and enemies somehow perfectly represent this type if souls like game. Dark and somber, even grotesque Sekiro has the best gameplay, as it forces you to focus on high action gameplay instead of being more passive. The dozens of skills, prosthetic upgrades, excellent traversal and fast movement make it easily the best gameplay in the series. Bloodborne lacks that variety, and the traversal is extremely limited. It doesn't hold a candle to sekiro
@Filianore__4 жыл бұрын
@@geraltofrivia7448 idk about you, but I see Bloodborne's lore to be more rich than that of all Dark Souls trilogy. Dark souls revolve around the defeat of the dragons, rekindling of the fire, lord, humanity, demon and dragons' timelines, and then all the branches spread all over the place, some are unknown, some are well hidden, some are given via item design, in which if you're not trying, you'll never know, plus almost all of them are incomplete(with few exceptions such as Artorias' lore and some few dlc's like ivory king dlc). It is indeed vast and complex, but it doesn't meanc it's better. Bloodborne on the other hand is very rich in terms of lore design, it revolves around one major lore and everything goes on with it, the only thing incomplete is that one chalice dungeon part, I can't remember the name, all the npcs have purposes, they progress very well, the lore that these npcs have is very decision and game progression dependant, which you may not get all the possible outcome in one run, you will still feel the weight of your decision. Then there's the lore, it is so good BB's playerbase is divided into whether they want a BB2 or not, coz the game feels complete, BB2 is for the people who just want another masterpiece in flesh to enjoy.
@geraltofrivia74484 жыл бұрын
@@Filianore__ the dark souls lore is much deeper than just the games It's confusing and hard to understand, much more complex. Bloodborne was just too straightforward to me. I got it all in my first run Whereas in ds, I'm not yet master of the lore
@Filianore__4 жыл бұрын
@@geraltofrivia7448 i doubt you got the entirety of it in your first run. But ok, supposedly it is what happened, then you should know that the way it is designed is much more rich that the entirety of ds's lore. Dark Souls lore is complex, but not good enough for me, the kingdoms that sprouted other than Lothric, Profaned Capital and Lordran seems lacking of lore. Especially in Dark Souls 2, it's kinda, all over the place for me. While in Bloodborne, you have the whole Yharnam, Cainhurst, the nightmares and Dlc, that binds the whole lore together. Which is not very straightforward for me, but it makes sense when you finally get it. I won't into an in-depth explanation because it is still very long of a lore. But definitely gravitating towards BB's lore than DS
@Filianore__4 жыл бұрын
@@geraltofrivia7448 but in the end of the day, it's a matter of personal preference. So we should settle it this way, in my opinion: Best Lore: Bloodborne Best Design: Bloodborne Gameplay: Sekiro And yours is will remain as such, coz it's your opinion.

Late to the game here, but this is one of the best series of reviews I have seen. Having said that, I don't think anyone can review Demons Souls adequately unless it was your first. The sense of wonder and exploration was unapparelled for me and you couldn't achieve that if you came from Dark Souls. I still remember putting that game (used, of course) at Gamestop and the clerk looking at me and saying, "You sure you want this? It's very tough."
