TBH I was surprised to see that Kotlin only have that much of job requirement (since it's the best candidate to replace java because of his ability to run on the JVM). Thanks for this instructing video ! I think languages like Go and Rust will be mainly for side hustle for the next years but will become kings in the future

As a Java developer, it's always funny when people who like other languages realize how much Java code is out there. Also, with the most recent changes, I think Java's popularity is going to grow.

Lately I got back into Java and I must say the language is not that bad. My issue is the tooling around it. You either use a full fledged IDE or you are in for a lot of pain. Tried for almost a month to have the helix editor (similar to Vim) to work with Java but I just managed to waste a lot of time. Wished Java was a bit more Unix friendly.

You have to divide by number of people you're competing with. Hypothetically if there's 50 jobs for something but 25 people applying you are likely to get a job despite it being unpopular. Hard to get that data for that side of the equation though

The GO number is GOing to be inflated by all the ads that just happen to have the word "go" (unrelated to the language) so it's gotta be even lower. Also, the amount of experience and other skills required will vary. Java jobs are generally pretty senior. "Python" jobs often require that you have another language too, and sometimes Python is listed as a nice to have for other types of developer. When Python is the only language required the job will often require a math or science degree, although hopefully the word "developer" will exclude many of those. However, the overall recommendation at the end of "Java, Python, C#, Javascript" is a good one for any jobless beginner who learns at least two of those instead of putting all their energy into Go, Rust and Kotlin.

I'm sort of surprised by the number of PHP jobs, but if I had to make sense of those numbers based on my intuition and recent experience on my national job market... I would argue that either the PHP jobs are being offered through private offers (not by posting the announcement publicly on a website) or are already covered by developers with a stable position maintaining legacy apps. Of course, those metrics are much more difficult to obtain.

It would be very interesting to see the trends. For example, Java may still be first, but remember that there was once a time when it was simply ubiquitous. So maybe the trend is down sharper than we may expect, but still living off legacy code. If that were the case, would you recommend Java over JavaScript? 🤔

jobs market in Russia almost the same as in US, but C++ , java and js are dominant. Also I really enjoy new tendency that many big companies in my country started to use GO a lot and hire new GO devs. I am still a student and not yet get a job, currently learning java to get hire easily, but in the future I would love to switch to GO. I genuinely can't imagine how to get first job with GO or node.js or kotlin. With these 3 languages they never hire a junior, only people with experience. Unlike the languages I mentioned at the beginning. Better to pick up something popular with a many job offers to get hired.

No way Javascript is 3rd place, simply because it seems most startups use javascript in the backend, and startups are the majority of tech jobs. This is not to mention the web. I think the problem was you used the term Javascript developer. I believe a lot of job postings specify which libraries or frameworks they want someone to be good at in the job title. Like Angular Developer, React Developer, Vue Developer... etc. On top of that some just say Frontend Developer, and good luck passing the technical interview if you don't know Javascript. I would say the number for all Javascript encompassing jobs would be at least 3 times the stated number.

sucks for backend? I agree that python being a universal language usually is a bad choice for most tasks. But for backend python is really good. It's memory consumption is higher than go (30-60% more than go) but cpu usage is not far from go. Latency is usually higher but latency from the db is much worse. Also python is good for prototyping especially with tools like micropython (for arduino and esp). It's also great for bot development for businesses and gathering statistics. And it's even better for not programming tasks but i think those job vacancies must be in ML, data science and other filter searches. But I must admit, to make python performant and good for development you must use other stuff like poetry, mypy, ruff, numpy, pydantic but it's also true for other languages except go (go std and compiling time is the best i've used).

ok im a minute in but i see kotlin and not java and am wondering how many kotlin jobs there could really be. i would have guessed actual java should be there over kotlin. i'm sure most android apps are kotlin or something but it feels like the same vein as dart/flutter. i think a job as a kotlin developer is probably going to be a more enjoyable experience, but i know for a fact there are many enterprises who are 100% java for almost all their backend (and even frontend 😢) stuff.

The only one that surprised me was PHP with how low it was. The rest were as expected. Some people might be surprised how low Kotlin is, but it was expected -- any older android projects will be in Java -- any newer more modern android projects would be in Flutter or maybe React Native. There's just not an awful lot of pull towards Kotlin. The reason Java is so popular is old guys in suits. They won't replace Java with Kotlin. Melkey was surprised by C# but again it was expected. Some people forget Microsoft is still kinda a big deal lol. I think for us more, what's the work, geeky? Tech focused? people we usually dislike a language owned and controlled by a large corporation, but a lot of large companies will use it because it's microsoft. Again, old guys in suits.
