Your ranking is as I expected based on your reactions, we knew 3 would be at the top, although I thought 7 might have come before 6, but based on your scores and reactions it made sense. Have you watched night of the doctor yet? Paul McGann is fantastic in the big finish audios, John Hurt also did a few before he passed away.

Glad to hear you saw The 8th Doctor Paul Mcgann Doctor Who Movie, did you happen to see "The Night of the Doctor" mini-sode with him, you'll see his regeneration into the War Doctor? If not, make it a reaction video as you go through the Wilderness years.

My Doctor ranking is: The Doctor. To me, it’s the same character the whole way through. I will happily watch any story with any Doctor and any era (classic and modern) has had really good stories, good stories and clunkers. But even in those clunkers, there are gems (scenes, characters, quotes, costumes, settings, effects, etc.) to be found. Alas, the advise that Patrick Troughton gave Peter Davison about doing three years and getting out, seems to have become a persistent “rule” for Doctor Who. I understand why Patrick wanted to leave the show (type casting, plus the number of episodes per year being filmed in the 1960s, but can you imagine that rule applying to any other TV show? That rule didn’t work for the Davison era onwards (and Peter regrets that choice), because each Doctor since then has less episodes and less stories than the first four Doctor eras (William Hartnell through to Tom Baker), so we get less time with the more recent incarnations.

Your rankings are exactly the same as mine, and I developed my love for them before we got to see much of Patrick Troughton at all. But even after I had decided that third and fifth were my faves, the second Doctor just snuck into the #2 spot the more and more I saw of him. I also agree with you about the sixth Doctor -- with the exception of his first story, his others are AMAZING, some of the best the show's ever done.

He copped a raw deal from the production team, that’s for sure. His run definitely improved but the Trial season is still a bit of a hot mess and doesn’t make a lot of sense. He’s excellent in it though

21:55 In the words of RTD's "Queer as Folk", "Paul McGann doesn't count!" (If RTD ever thought that himself, he changed his mind long ago.) Lovely video. I could accept just about any ranking of the Doctors, because different eras appealing to different people is one of the show's great strengths. 4 will always be my favourite, because he did so much to make my pretty crummy, introverted adolescent life worth living but in the end, the Doctor is the Doctor.

The first three were a complete giveaway. I also suspect that if you'd done a whole lot of Big Finish audio that your sixth doctor ranking would be surprisingly higher. My personal rankings are all over the place and they change with my moods, so I won't list them. One final point ... and I've made it before. I wasn't overly impressed with the Silurians when I first watched it but I love it more and more each time I see it.

They say people who grew up during the classic era usually have the doctor they grew up with as their favourite. That sort of applies to me, although my earliest memories are from the Tom Baker years (roughly the Romana era 1978 onwards), my favourite has to be Peter Davison. I was 8 when Castrovalva was broadcast on BBC1, and I was able to record episodes on video so that helped make my memories of the 5th doctor much stronger as I watched every episode several times before having to wipe over the tape with later episodes. Having been introduced to some of the earlier doctors through the BBC Video releases during the 80s (and the Five Faces / Monsters repeats) I'd probably say my 2nd favourite is Patrick Troughton, as The Seeds of Death was the first video I bought. Not sure if I could rank the others but either Tom Baker or Jon Pertwee would go in the next 2 positions.

That was true for me until recently. My fave and first Doctor being Peter Davison, my second favourite being Colin. I noticed that whenever I'd watch Doctor Who on DVD or bluray, it would 8/10 times be from season 22 or 23.... Then I met Peter Davison and he was so utterly rude, dismissive and indifferent to me and other fans that he was knocked off the top spot. Colin is now and always will be my favourite Doctor. He was hilarious, feisty, bombastic and wonderful and Colin Baker himself has always been lovely, warm, kind and attentive each of the three times I've met him.

I was thinking you would rank Seven higher and Four lower, based on your reactions to their eras, but otherwise your list was largely in line with what I expected. Fans will naturally have very different views on this, and that’s fine as variety is the spice of life and it would be a boring world if we all agreed, but for what it’s worth One and Four would probably top my list, as not only did they both have more than their fair share of superb stories and great companions, but I also like the very alien, unknowable, element that is such a feature of their characters. I also have a very soft spot for Five, as he was my first Doctor and I just think Peter Davison is a great actor anyway. I do agree with you that the fourth Doctor stayed too long, and many would agree that his earlier stories are generally superior to the later ones, though I really like his last season. I also think that Three had the strongest initial run of stories of any Doctor, though things became a bit more inconsistent after Terror of the Autons. Interesting that you have given your view on Eight here before posting your TV Movie reaction, though I can understand why because, as you say, we didn’t get enough of him on TV to be able to come to a considered view of how he measures up to the other Doctors. I liked what we saw, though.

100% agree, Nyssa is the girl top two for me, there's Sarah Jane then Nyssa. Leela is next for me as well, she was a great companion and bodyguard. Plus her and Roman 2's relationships with K-9 are adorable. Doctors for me it' s 5, 4, 2, 3, 1, 8, 6, 7. While Tom Baker was my first intro to the show, Peter Davidson's era is the one that sits with me most. Just wish the music has been better during his run. Too much long notes on the synth for me. But that Cyber theme from Earthshock, Muuuha.

I think some companions are quite forgettable especially given the missing stories perhaps unfairly would downgrade the impact of certain companions. So a top companions list for me: Ace, feisty perhaps the original Spice Girl. We also get a lot of her backstory in season 26. She learned a lot especially about dangerous anachronisms. Tegan, longest serving companion by stories (not episodes) described herself as a mouth on legs. Very compassionate and believable. Turlough, a very interesting route to becoming a companion you don’t really trust him and he’s very well acted, he’s quite self centred. Peri, wrongly labelled a scream queen, Dilemma is a very strong Peri story which most people skip over. Went toe to toe with the Master and didn’t just accept the Doctor was always right, not scared to criticise. Unfortunately later became a bit of a damsel in distress. Harry, the stories involving Harry are all very strong but with only 1 season plus 2 stories we didn’t get enough of him. Written in when they thought they would cast an older lead, the likes of Hartnell then written out when they realised TB could do all the things IM had been brought in for “Harry Sullivan is an imbecile!” Never gets tired. Ian, Ian was Bill Hartnell’s Harry, the action man quite fearless and protective of not only the female companions but he knew that if anything happened to the Doctor then they’d be stuck where they were. He also stood up to the Doctor which not many companions would. Leela, like ACE Leela obviously learned a lot during her brief stay, she’s another one season (and a half) wonder, her impact is greater than her participation which is the tell of a great character. She had some incredibly strong stories and paired up with K9 very well. Jo, the main companion for arguably the best Doctor. Jo was equally at home in the U.N.I.T family or creeping along a ledge as a Princess on Peladon. I think the Doctor saw her as a daughter or perhaps a student and he was genuinely upset when she chose to stay on Earth. Romana, she was a Timelady before Nu Who messed with everything. She was obviously a higher grade than the Doctor and had far more control over her regeneration than he did. (Remember when 2 regenerated he was given options but didn’t choose one) Romana 1 we didn’t get to see much of at all but Romana 2 had a very strong presence of her own and a great chemistry both Romana and the Doctor (and Lalla & Tom) but also with K9, there was an opposites relationship with Leela & K9 but a very different great minds relationship with Romana and K9. Sarah-Jane, I’m not quite sure how Sara-Jane has endeared herself to so many Dr Who fans, perhaps being the bridge between the 3rd and 4th Doctors who most classic fans would put one or other as their favourite Doctor might have something to do with it. Sarah-Jane has the journalist’s nose for trouble and it does get her into sticky situations. Looking back though Sarah-Jane is a bit of a scream queen. She has a great double act with every companion, both Doctors and Harry especially. She’s not under the Brigadier’s command so she’s a little cheeky with him. There’s just something about Sarah-Jane and I can’t quite get it but she’s just great.

I love sharing the same top 3 as you, even if in different order: I go 5, 3, 2. It means we go for the Doctors with more humanly bondable reassuringness and good nature about them. We connect less well with the harder alien takes on him. You said your fourth + fifth places were close, and on any days when yiu swap them round we wiuld have the same top 4 too. Though Colin's reputation is very unlike these top 3, his arc of personality crisis headed in the right direction and he was a morally serious Doctor

Your top three are as we expected, which is great, it was nice to see how you ranked everyone and your reasons for doing so. I have four Doctors that I rank number 1, I find it difficult to put them in a definate order as I find it varies depending on who I am watching. But I do love all the classic Doctors. For me my favourites are 5,3,4,2 then after that in joint second place is 1 and 6, third place 7,8. That might seem that I am chickening out or placing them 1 to 8 but I find it really difficult to do that.I think it would be great if you could do a Companion ranking.

Here is my list of favorite doctors (including classic & New Who) although disclaimer, I do like all the doctors: 1. Twelfth / Peter Capaldi While I started in 2005, it wasn't until Capaldi was about to take over. He was the first doctor I watched as he was the current doctor and with every other doctor I've met, I see more brilliance in this performance. He is and forever will be my doctor. 2. First / William Hartnell Starting my dive into classic Who during the Chibbnall era, the first really captured my heart in a way I never expected. He started it all and is the Doctor... the original, you might say 3. Third / John Pertwee This is where I started to really like the classic series. I loved Hartnell but with a few stories being exceptions, I didn't really like it. Pertwee was the action hero I never knew I needed and I wish I got more from him... this classic Doctor is possibly the one I'll be revisiting the most. 4. Ninth / Christopher Ecclestone The revival was something to be loved and before watching the show live, this was my doctor. He captured my heart like none before could. I just wish he got more stories (thank you Big Finish). 5. Tenth / David Tennant Put down the pitchforks. I love Tennant but a lot of his stories felt weak. I would say S2 was the weakest series of NuWu and has the most episodes I skip on a rewatch. Not a fan of the romance stuff. But S4 was gold and proved my issues were with the writing more than him as a Doctor. He deserves the praise he gets... but I can't put him higher. 6. Fourth / Tom Baker If your still with me, I have a similar opinion on the 4th as the 10th. Except I felt he had too much time, I feel like he could've given a season or two to other doctors and cut off dead weight. Tom Baker has amazing stories and truly embodied the role of the Doctor like none until Capaldi. He just had a rougher finish and thus him being this far down. 7. Sixth / Colin Baker I feel like this is the first doctor, who was a victim of the writers. I also want to say, I am including Big Finish projects (I've not heard them all, obviously, but I've seen a lot). I would say Colin got a lot more defined in the audio form and I truly believe, should she decide to do it, Thirteen will be revived a lot in this medium. Also, entries 7 - 12 could be switched in any order. 8. Seventh / Sylvester McCoy Again... I feel like he's a victim of writing. Maybe it's sad that he was the doctor when it got canceled. Although, he is the doctor I'd like to travel with the most. There's just something about him that appeals to my soul. 9. Fifth / Peter Davidson I don't have much to say... he was a fine doctor... but nothing really elevates him higher for me. 10. Eighth / Paul McGann This is why I'm including Big Finish. I love McGann and would love for him to get his own series. Unfortunately, a lot of his work comes from the audio form. He deserves better and given the chance, I think he could be near the top of this list. 11. War Doc / John Hurt Another reason I'm using Big Finish... maybe it's because I love exploring the time war, but I also love the legend brought to us in the 50th anniversary. 12. Thirteen / Jodie Whittaker This isn't going to go well... I have a lot of issues with the Chibbs era but they all come down to the writing. Jodie has moments that truly show she could be a great doctor but the material wasn't good. For those saying it's too woke... Doctor who has always been political... I just hope she does Big Finish and gets the redemption she deserves. 13. Eleven / Matt Smith I think this is another opinion which won't go well. I don't like the more comical Doc's, as at times it can feel like it's for children. Smith has some darker elements, which I loved but they were watered down by the energy. I also dislike the companions... Rory was decent but... long story short, there's a reason he's this far down. 14. Second / Patrick Trouton I disliked Smith's energy but I can see his origins here... considering I wasn't into the black-and-white era but Hartnall saved it for me... I don't want to end on anything negative but this is probably the Doctor I'm going to revisit the least.

KZbin refreshed on me and I lost my prediction, but I was expecting 4 to be a little lower, and 7 to be much higher. 8's incredible in the audios and I highly recommend that you go through them like you would seasons of the show. My personal ranking (taking into account a ton of expanded universe stuff, and also it changes massively and regularly): 8 and 12 (yes I'm tying rankings, yes it's cheating, yes I've done it for the whole list) 3, 6, and 7 (some days these are all tied with first place too) 2 and 9 1 and 5 11 and 13 (I'd argue the best material for both of them is in the comics, if you can find those) 4 and 10 (but obviously they're still great. The thing is, they're so iconic, they've become the default, so they've become the standard, so they've become boring. I much prefer deviations from the norm)

McCoy Edit: Clearly I'm surprised how low you put Hartnell on the list! I remember how strongly you felt about him toward the end of his run, but I agree with your reasoning for having him so low in retrospect. I don't think there's been a bad Doctor -- they all brought their own nuances to the role. I didn't have McGann in my guess for you because, as you said, there's not enough to go on. Interesting list, and each to their own. It’s always fascinating how people view stuff, for me I can’t really separate the Doctors from the overall story quality. The writing, directing, atmosphere etc is to me as important, probably more important, than the Doctors & companions. I’m just not that heavily focused on the personality aspects of Who…… Unless they annoy me….. which is why I always rate 7 last. I just can’t look past McCoy’s hammy acting. I can see why people love 3. His first season is great, the rest not so much. If you love that jokey, very English Unit family atmosphere, and Pertwee’s charm, you’ll love the era. Personally his Doctor is just too establishment for my tastes, and he’s too bloody rude and arrogant at times. Baker was in the role too long. His first 3 seasons were the absolute pinnacle of Who, unmatched in consistency, quality of writing, atmosphere and mood. He had the best run of companions (well until Adric). The next 3 seasons are very up & down, but his last season builds up brilliantly. He and Troughton are the best, for mine. I do really like Peter Davison and his time though, it was classic Who’s last gasp of success to my thinking. I didn’t enjoy Who again from his demise till the 05 rebirth. Paul McGann would’ve been excellent. Such a shame he didn’t get a run at it. Even his final scenes done in that short for the 50th special were fantastic

To be honest I could not Rank the Doctors for various reasons. The First Doctor had Aliens that no other Doctor had. All of them had some really good stories that no other Doctor could have done as well. For me I loved them all the same.

My top 3 are (in best first) 4th, 2nd and 7th. I do think if 6’s era was more consistent he’d be in that top 3, but to me, no one beats Tom Baker. He *is* the doctor. I usually rank 5th as last out of the classic doctors, he feels a bit meh.

Never been keen on the first doctor myself, despite growing up with him. He's not a BAD doctor but the character really came into fruition with Troughton for me. The fourth doctor has never been at the top of my list either (although he'd be way above Hartnell) - as you say, the latter half of his era is dull in places and he just isn't quite as likeable / relatable as some of the others in my opinion (I know it might be mad to label a doctor as TOO alien, but I kind of do here).

Pausing as requested! My rankings are a little different from yours, and I'll admit it's swayed by Big Finish 1 Sylvester McCoy 2 Colin Baker 3 Patrick Troughton Joint 4/5 Tom Baker/William Hartnell 6 Peter Davison 7: Jon Pertwee If we're including Paul McGann though, he goes right to the top. As you've seen the TV Movie, I don't mind saying that. But by no means is Jon Pertwee a bad Doctor, I hold them all in such a high regard, but someone has to be at the bottom, and I guess as you said about story quality, that's what does it for poor Pertwee for me. Though he never had a shot at Big Finish in his lifetime, so what it does to boost 6 and 7 for me can't work for him, which is a bit unfair.

The worse part of the 7th doctor was his first season. It was originally written for the 6th doctor. Where McCoy shines is his 2nd and 3rd series He was only going to do one more series then regenerate. Unfortunately the series was shelved

I never like to rank any Doctor I think their great in their own right. I have to say though i totally disagree about Tom Baker staying too long I liked both him in the Philip Hinchcliffe and the Graham Williams era both the darkest and comedic sides I grew up with Tom Baker and he was my first I could have handled another season with Tom and was devastated when he left if Tom hadn't had stayed longer I don't think Dr. Who would be the icon it is today it's because you started with the first three is probaly why you don't feel that connection with him or use to seeing the Doctor showing human emotions Tom was the most alien out of the Doctors and I like that I like when the Doctor acts alien I never warmed up to Peter Davison, Colin Baker or Sylvester McCoy I think Dr. Who was reaching it's peak when the 1980's hit I also love Jon Pertwee those two men were the golden age of Classic Who in my opinion but to me Tom Baker will always be the defintive Doctor he "is" The Doctor the definite article you might say. I have to say also and this will be controversial but I never really connected to Sarah Jane Smith she was ok but loved Harry, loved Leela, loved Romana both versions and K-9 I love that he had non human companions. I loved Hartnell and Troughton as well but not as much as I love Pertwee and Baker.

1980s producer John Nathan turner worked on the show on Patrick troutons last few episodes the sadness of Jamie and Zoe having their memories erased and then jon peewee and Tom baker doctors never felt so emotionally attached to their companions as the second Doctor yes they are upset with Jo Grant and Sarah Jane left but not so emotionally the 1980s producer then decided the fifth Doctor will be the first doctor to have a strong relationship with his assistants as three of them were orphans or four if you include turlough sent to public school they all had a relative killed when they joined the tardis crew ,they all went through A emotional story and all left in tragic ways adric dies , nyssa going off to help those with lasers disease and Tegan leaves in despair as so many good people have died and turlough having to come to terms with the fact that he’d been a prisoner of a boys school so the fifth doctor then decides he’s going to have a emotional relationship with peri and yes the whole point of the fifth Doctor worked better was Peri was why it was so good to see the 6Th Doctor with Peri and of course the fifth Doctor then gets himself killed so the 6Doctor doesn’t get on with Peri that the doctor trying to make a good friendship with peri as he then ended up with her dying although ret conned she didn’t die she married the king the six doctors decides to form a good friendship with Mel only for him to regenerate this time with mrl the seventh Doctor gets on very well then he takes ace on an emotional journey as she develops into a better character for the record if you include companions who Appeared in 2 stories does that include kameleon does Mike and Sergeant Benton count as companions and for the record will , you say does Grace count I hope you watch the night of the Doctor another eighth Doctor, story , you were right about the rankings of course the eighth doctor returned the power of the doctor Jodis last story Trial of the time Lord is a classic story it also raises the question does the valeyard count as an incarnation of the war Doctor or John hurt or Jesse Martin A companion rankings yes

Totally agree with the third doctor he only had a couple of weak stories compared to the other doctors most people go for the 4th doctor because of his fantastic first 3 seasons but a lot of his later seasons had bad stories and cgi. But my ranking is 3, 2, 4, 7, 1, 5 then last 6 ps i agree about the cybermen after the black and white era the only good cyberman story was earthshock in colour classic era

Well…I screwed that up 😂. My biggest surprise is Hartnell so low…(Steven! Ian!) and im pleased u put Davidson as high as you did…my memory was that you were enjoying the stories but you didn’t seem especially enamored of the him as The Doctor. But then again my memory could be off. So that was another miss on my part. Anyway…it’s a hard list to make and I don’t think I’d ever attempt it!!! (It would change a lot)Though I did once do all the companions new and old and am still sort of pleased with it.
