Shaun and Rebecca being downplayed in Black Flag makes sense because while we the player know their significance, the Abstergo staff and by extension the Newbie we’re playing as don’t. We know they’re present on Assassin business yet it’s not established within the narrative until the end of the game.

Honestly I would put origins above odyssey because while the actual modern day story in odyssey is better the pacing of it was horrible (sprinkled in as an afterthought) compared to the quick breaks between targets in origins.

I like the present day in Odyssey. You shift location from the London loft, which does provide shout outs to Syndicate and Rabbids, to Layla diving into the gates to Atlantis and setting up where the Eagle Bearer met Pythagoras within the Animus simulation. Say what you will about the plotting, Fate of Atlantis does make Layla much more of an active part in events rather than just an observer through the Animus as previous DLCs in the franchise had done, she even gets a boss fight against Otso Berg although the deck is heavily stacked against him.

Layla’s laptop contains some interesting stuff in terms of lore and personal character background, including that she used to be friends with Sophia Rikkin and helped design the Animus from the movie. If you don’t go looking through the computer in Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla then you’re missing out. Valhalla has new audio recordings with Desmond.

I agree that AC3 was the best modern day. I still remember the first time I finished the game and was sad that Desmond wouldn't be the protagonist anymore. I wish we could replay those modern day sequences.

Well you can replay the Desmond sequences if you go to a computer near Rebecca once you clear the mission for the first time. Warning: Once you clear the game, you cannot replay the Missions.

I like the modern-day overall as long as it's in 3rd person rather than in 1st person, it doesn't pull the player out of the animus too many times, and actually has a purpose for using the animus rather than just being there. It's a shame we won't see that much of the modern day in Mirage.

I love the modern day and I have hope for it in the future. Especially since it's apart of infinity now, we might even get dedicated modern day missions which will hopefully spice things up.

Unity does have the server bridges, which provide environments set after Revolutionary France you can explore after through the rift activities. But yeah, there’s no getting around that the closest it gets to advancing the modern day plot it that Abstergo want another sage and it turns out the one they’re tracking down was out of reach the whole time.

Robert was one of the Subjects reliving Arno's story. The animus screwed him up and with the help of Dr. Bibeau (the woman Layla kills in Odyssey) destroyed Abstergo's research on Arno. Hence in Syndicate, you're collecting Helix Glitches to put information together to see what Robert destroyed during Unity

This rankings list perfectly matches my own, and you explained the reasoing behind each choice anazingly. In my opinion, an Assassin's Creed game NEEDS a good modern day in order to be a good game, and the Desmond Miles Era is what molded that opinion for me. Combat, stealth, historical setting, historical accuracy, and story for both historical and modern times are what make or break an AC game, and the top games on this list did a better job meeting as many of those criteria as possible. More modern games, however, seem to tunnel in a one or two of those criteria, and tyen leave the rest behind, which makes them extremely underwhelming.

My first game was Black Flag and it was so interesting discovering the modern day assassins and piecing it all together. I really felt like I was part of the world. I can see how starting with other games makes it different

Maybe there should be an entirely modern day Assassin's Creed, because the Brotherhood's headquarter is a ship. That sets the perfect tone for them to go around the world looking for Isu temples and artefacts, fighting Templars, infiltrating Abstergo facilities, there's a lot of potential. I'm thinking of a game structure like in Splinter Cell Blacklist, as Fourth Echelon also used a Paladin as a mobile headquarter and went around the world on missions like the modern day Assassins supposedly do.

The Black Flag modern day teaches me subtle solarpunk scifi architecture, the office of Abstergo Industries Paris is my favourite interior space in a game and is still a core inspiration when I make scifi interiors to this day

While Syndicate is disappointing in not having any playable modern day sequences, I think it actually works really well for the story. We’re seeing Shaun and Rebecca after the loss of Desmond and everything that happened in the previous games. They’re still assassins, still doing what they do, but things feel more dire than when we were playing as Desmond. Introducing a new playable character into these parts would feel like a betrayal of the tone for me. It’s important that it’s only them, that everyone they’ve worked with in previous games is gone, Shaun HAS to get out of his comfort zone if they’re to succeed.

AC 3 and AC Brotherhood had the best modern days for me. For AC 3 we got to do the most gameplay in the modern day and Brotherhood had the best connection between the modern-day and the Animus with going to the Villa from AC 2 and then visiting the place where Ezio hid the Apple of Eden.

I can’t believe that I found people that like the modern day stuff, and Desmond in particular. I thought everyone hated it and him, but I loved it. Could it have been better? Yes, but AC3 was awesome, and for the most part, you don’t have to play those parts if you don’t want to, so why complain? I wish they didn’t kill Desmond off, but I also wish that I could play more as Ezio, so I guess I’m just an old guy.

I mostly agree with this list, would switch AC1 and Revelations. When Ubisoft killed Desmond off and modern day started becoming more of an afterthought I kinda stopped caring about the series.

Taking into account that I haven't played anything after Syndicate, I liked Brotherhood's modern day the most purely from the perspective of gameplay = two assassin tomb-sized parkour sections and no fighting. The modern day combat never looked quite right for me.

It’s a shame that a lot of the modern day storyline is under utilised. I blame mostly on fan’s general opinion during the early years. Most people I’ve interacted with HATED everything about the modern day storyline, with only a few exceptions like Desmond and Shaun etc. Nowadays, people have warmed up to the idea of the modern day storyline after seeing the potential and letting their opinions change and mature (for the most part). It’s sad that Ubisoft is abandoning this idea.
