There was once a time in the past when people thought stainless steel looked futuristic. Now the trend is more towards different colors and more unique shapes.

The rolling stock is very utilitarian and lacks character with every line with these stainless steel units. As a New Yorker I definitely liked the older trains growing up.

I love the R68s, 46s, and 143s; I've used them so often to go to school and work. The 68s are starting to get kids kicking down the doors, especially on the D and N trains in the last car, shit is annoying tbh. I feel like they should start putting a transit agent on cars with operator cabs to prevent door kickers.

Really informative for an outsider and a rail fan from india 🇮🇳, interesting rolling stock very different from the one’s we have in Indian metro systems and the whole station/platforms are very different. In Asia be it china, india , Singapore, Indonesia and Hong Kong all have similar design philosophy.

Most new train operators have difficulties operating a R68A because of it's braking system. However the trick is when coming into the station take the break and hold it until the train starts to slow down and stop then release the brake slowly until you come up to your marker. The R68A breaking system is similar to the R62's on the 3. Regardless I like operating both types of trains it gives me a challenge as a train operator. P.S. I love letting it rip on the 3 going express on Broadway. One time I was coming in through 50th street station going towards 42nd and I hit 48 miles per hour!!

Hey MysticTransit! I’ve been watching your videos all day and I have to say I love your work, bro, keep it up! I think I agree your list, although I‘m not from nowhere near NY and I have only been once so I don’t really have much of a sustained opinion. I think I just would have put the lovely R62As further up because, asides from being beautiful and for the services they serve, they definitely are built like a tank, they are also very iconic, even appearing in animated movies like Madagascar. But fir the rest, very good tier list! I really hope you can catch the TOMC next time!

One issue: "Formers", as I understand it, are by definition, strong railfans. Railfans, no matter how extreme, don't vandalize equipment. Foamers are called that by people who work on railroads but aren't railfans and they think railfans get in the way. They don't understand the "obsession" we have with trains. Foamers are not to be confused with vandals. At worse, I think, is they may trespass on Transit property, but likely will not break in and certainly not vandalize railroad/transit property. Perhaps someone will give me an example of what a Foamer may do that even a strong railfan wouldn't?

I agree with this list!! Explains why the R68As get flat spots on their wheels the most often out of all the cars. Although maybe the R68s come at a close second. As for the R142As, you mentioned a mid-life overhaul. I was thinking, what if the MTA replaced the red LEDs on the front of the train and used color LEDs like they did on the R110A Prototype Cars? Red for 7th Avenue, Green for Lexington Avenue, etc… Or, they could use the outside circle as the color LEDs and use the numbers in the middle as only white LEDs.

Despite this, I really think that the R142As are better off with Jessica’s Announcements solely, I miss those announcements on the 4 and 6 lines. I mean yeah there are some stations and announcements on the 4 from Jessica still but not as common as before 2018/2019 when the last of the R142As on the 6 were gone and put on either the 4 or converted to R188s for the 7. While I haven’t rode the 7 too often, the R188s are pretty cool when I do ride the 7(once in a while). I just see them as upgraded R142As.

I was at the 161 street station and saw the special trains. I have taken the R46 most commonly on the R line. I rode the R62 and R62A mostly on the 1,3, 6, and Times Square Shuttle. I also at one point I took an R62A on the 7 line before they were taken off the 7 line. I would take R68 or R68As to 161 street a lot. I once took an R46 A to an R68 D train. The R142 would be seen at my home station which was 66 street Lincoln Center. I used to use the R142A on the 6 between 42 street and Lexington Avenue which was 51 street. I used to take the R160 on the N and W lines and very rarely the R. I also liked R160B. I took the R143 only one time. I haven't taken or seen an R179 yet but the traction reminds me of the M8 that I took 2 times recently and I like it. You forgot to say that the R46 as well as R68/A trains were lemons before they were overhauled. I also didn't get a good shot of the special trains moving because I only got to see them from at least 70 feet away. I was on the street and I didn't have any money for a metro card and I didn't have enough time to see it but I did get videos of R142A 7666 leading a train to New Lots Avenue at 5:05 PM and 3 minutes later at 5:08 PM I saw an R142 number 1175 leading a train to Woodlawn. Departed at 5:09 PM with 1120 at the rear. Holly crap I wrote an entire paragraph.

In my [humble] opinion, the disadvantage with nearly all of the rolling stock is that some railcars were damaged permanently by fire or derailment. New York City Transit cannot afford to lose any more rolling stock. You were thoughtful and right to mention that no one should enter transit property, [including transverses (crew cabins), and other places that are closed to the riding public. Please do not say a swear or bad word with the name of [Great] God. I type to you as a railfan and a long-time subway buff.

The R62's and the 62A's are some of the best rolling stock introduced in my lifetime... Always solid, seldomly ever had a problem riding one, they had the best air conditioning in summer of any stock when introduced back in the 80s and still seem to be holding up. The R142As are great for 21st century cars. Probably my favorite cars next to the non converted from r142, r188s.(Though the new build r188s are nicer than the retrofit 142s, the front or back car is usually a new one... Better lighting) The R68 is also a favorite, those were introduced at a time they were replacing some filthy, graffiti covered unreliable ancient stock from the early days of the IND. They were a breath of fresh air, especially when riding over the Manhattan bridge or to Coney Island with those big picture windows. Great trains.

My favorites are (I don't list the "A" suffixes since the designs are basically the same between models with slight differences): R44/46 (since they're essentially the same design with small differences) R160 (with SIEMENS SITRAC propulsion) Honorable Mentions: R68 R142 R143

I liked the R44 more than the R46 because they kept the plexiglass where the seats at the doors are. At some point they were removedon the 46s and you had to protect yourself from getting an elbow in your face during rush hour if you sat there. I also thought the 44s transmissions and braking system was slightly less noisy.

Interesting ranking of the different series of NYC Transit railcars. There are a number of factors that go into reliability of a subway car. Let's say the engineering/design of the car is the first (it can be modified as flaws are discovered in train service). After that you have maintenance (& you listed the shops that maintain the various R series) and parts availability - no parts = no fix. If you maintain a car (train, automobile, etc.) properly it will function as designed. If it is poorly maintained (because of sub-par mechanics) then you will have failures on the road that were not anticipated. Some shops have a dedicated workforce (Car-Inspectors) with a supportive management team & some shops have too many under-performing workers mixed in with the dedicated ones. The availability of parts is another important issue. At NYC Transit if you don't have the right part in stock you have to "borrow" it from another train car. The electronic components for the New Tech trains (R142, R160, etc.) that are repaired at the Electronics Shop can often be hit or miss. They have bench-test equipment that is suppose to determine if the controller/module was repaired to specs, but there are some faults that elude the bench-test equipment. In those cases it makes more sense to "borrow" a know good controller/module to make a repair to a train that has to go into service. In most of the Maintenance Shops the midnight shift is responsible for getting their trains ready for the next day. The mid-day shift (called the PM shift) works on the trainset that was inspected by the day shift. Their main focus is on repairing defects that were found by the day shift that could not be repaired in time, instead of the more sensible approach of helping the midnight shift have a number of trains already fixed for them. What happens is the midnight shift runs around trying to make repairs to trains that have to be Pre-Serviced (looked at to determine if there are any faults) as more trains are being brought into the train yard. It is a lop-sided system that comes out of the stone-ages! In addition to that most of the Stock Rooms close from 2AM--7AM! So you cannot simply blame a certain set of train cars when they break down. It's the workforce behind them that typically makes the difference. It is amazing that a of these train cars have lasted for so many years. Since they have not rusted out a smart Transit boss would simply modify/retrofit these cars to be more reliable. Save a lot of money that way!

The Redbirds, R32s, R27s/R30s, R38s, R44s R40 Slants and Mods are always my top favorite subway cars, sadly I was never a fan of the R62s from childhood through now (although they were my Grandma's favorite subway cars, RIP). As a passenger I love the R46s because of the window seats and the warm colored interior that reminds me of Fall, but as a Cleaner I don't like cleaning it's floors because it's way too much work and fatiguing to clean at times when we're understaffed at a terminal. Sadly the R46's propulsion sounds tired and their floors are in very bad condition, they are reaching their final lives. From the New Tech trains I am 50-50 with the R143s but the R142 Bombardier, R160 Alstom and the R179s are also my favorites. The R211s my comments are pending for now til I hopefully ride it when it enters its 30 day revenue service.

My opinions on the rolling stock: SMEE units: R46 (1975-78): I think they’re pretty nice, but they have been breaking down a couple times from what I’ve heard. They have indeed reached the end of their service life, and as sad as it’ll be to see them go, the R211’s will definitely be an improvement. Verdict: B Tier. R62/A (1983-85; 1984-87): They’re ok I guess. IDK, maybe I’m just not impressed with them running on the 6 again (A sets). I’m more used to seeing them on the 1, 3 and 4 than I am with the 6. I was also used to seeing them on the 7 before the R188’s came along, but, well, yeah. Maybe for the time being, before the R262’s are delivered, few of the R62A’s on the 1 and 6 can be transferred to the 4. More on that later. Verdict: B Tier (both sets) R68/A (1986-88; 1988-89): Personally my favorite SMEE fleet. Love the interior lighting. Really adds to the charm. Not a big fan of the breaking on the A sets though, and that’s probably why most of the A sets run mostly on the B, as the D uses only the traditional 68’s. I think when more of the R211’s are built, we might see the sets transferred from the B and D to the A, C, N, Q, and W trains, as the B and D are in need of NTT’s after all. Verdict: Godly (Traditional sets); D tier (A Sets) NTT units: R142 (1999-2003): They’re pretty great, though the only few downsides are the Alstom ONIX propulsion (not a big fan of the screechy violin sound), and the unnecessarily loud HVAC. The flickering LED’s are pretty cool if I do say so myself. Hopefully during their mid-life refurbishment, the loud HVAC and Alstom ONIX motors will be replaced. Verdict: A tier. R142A (1999-2004): When it comes to IRT rolling stock, I ADORE these trains. As a young boy, I loved riding these trains both on the 4 and 6, especially the 6 since I mostly took that line when on my way to grade school. Sadly nowadays, they’re only used on the 4, as most of the 6’s R142A’s have been transformed into R188’s in order to be used on the 7. As I said with the R62A’s, I wish to see a few of them be transferred from both the 1 and 6 to the 4 when the R262’s come along. I wish to see both the 1 and 6 use R142/A’s transferred from the 4 as well as a few R262’s. The 4 should use mostly R262’s alongside the 3. The 2 and 5 can continue using only R142’s. I hope that during the mid-life refurbishment, the trains can keep using the Bombardier MITRAC motors, because they just sound wonderful. If not, hopefully they replace it with something similar. Maybe a Siemens propulsion with the same Bm pitch. Godly, 100%. R143 (2001-03): Like the R142A’s, I friggin ADORE these trains. It’s kind of a shame they were only built for the L, but at least the MTA is having them run on the J/Z line as well. I love the LED display that tells you stuff about Access-A-Ride and a couple other things, as well as the little art of a city skyline at night. Now if only they can update it so it can say stuff about OMNY instead of the MetroCard. I would hate to see the little LED screen go, because the little art of the city skyline means so much to me. I’ll start a campaign to preserve to the LED screen if I have to! Verdict: Godly. R160 (2005-10): I really like the R160’s. They’re sleek, pretty modern, and have an awesome FIND display which I really like. They looked pretty unique and futuristic when I first rode them on the N back in 2007 (I was only 8 or 9 at the time I first rode an R160, in which I believe was an Alstom set), now they’re the norm of the system we have today. The one downside? A majority of them use the Alstom ONIX motors, in which, again, I’m not to big a fan of. However a couple few use the Siemens motors, which I truly think makes them more unique. I love the whirring noise the doors on the Alstom-built sets make, but sadly, the Kawasaki-built sets have the whirring noise silenced. At some times when filming the trains, the LED’s on the front of the train make a nice flicker effect which I think is pretty cool. I have yet to see it actually happen with my human eyes if possible. Verdict: A tier (both sets). R188 (2011-17): My love for the R142A’s is the same for the R188’s. I don’t want any changes with their assignments whatsoever. They were built for the 7, and the 7 only. It is not like the R143. The R143 can run on both the J/Z and L lines, and the M if possible. The R188 is to stay on the 7, and I don’t mind that. In fact, it’s perfect.👌 Verdict: Godly R179 (2015-19): I love how they use the same door chime synth as the R142/A’s, and their unique Bombardier AC propulsion. They had a couple hiccups in their first few years, but as of now they seem to be running just fine. My only problem is the announcements. For some reason, there’s a small pause between what line it is running on and the next stop announcement. Speaking of the next stop announcements, whenever it says “The Next Stop is”, it’s only Kathleen Campion’s voice saying the line. Why they programmed only Kathleen’s TNSI line into the train and not program in any of the ones from Catherine Cowdery, I really don’t know. It just kinda feels like an oxymoron to me. Verdict: C tier.

What's so special about the 32s? A lot of rail fans say this but they were never my favorite. I loved the slants. The R38s didn't last as long but they were similar to the 32s. The slants were dramatic with their huge original letter signs, low belt lines and extended windows (which the rebuilds standardization messed up).
