For context on the Earthbound song. The beginning is you entering the lair of Guygas. You are walking on basically his intestines. A road of flesh up to his final form. A twisted pained alien fetus. The next phase is you going into battle with him. The next phase is you as the player and the Characters realizing... You are max level and yet you arent doing enough damage. You start loosing. The next stage is your healer character doing the "least" used spell during the game. Pray. You begin to pray for the safety of everyone. For your words to reach everyone around the world to help you fight. Then a cutscene happens that shows everyone youve met on your journey in a spirit bomb fashion, praying to help you defeat gaygus and return safely. Then the last transition is the prayer working. Gaygus is in pain and his form is beginning to twist even more in pain. You can now defeat guygas. What a fight.

Actually, you still can't beat Giygas. The only way to beat Giygas is to continue praying, and each time you use Pray, it shows you a cutscene of someone you met on the journey and their prayer does damage to Giygas, with each one consecutively dealing more and more damage until the very last one deals 65,535 damage and it defeats him. I've tested this with an entirely overpowered group that had stats so high they were glitching (using the infinite Rock Candy glitch) and I tested it at all stages of Pray and Giygas is literally invincible. You can deal a million damage to him at each of the stages of Praying and you will never beat him. It's scripted so that Only Pray works, and you must use it a pre-set number of times. There's literally no point in attacking Giygas once you get to the part you're supposed to Pray.

submerged castle is terrifying to me because of the context. you are playing this funny, kid friendly strategy game and then you see a cave, you jump in and you are greeted by....... that. not the normal atmosphere, but an anxiety inducing track that puts you on edge. And for good reason too, since after a certain time..... "something" starts to chase you. A creature that does not fit into the game. Unkillable, and completely different then anything you encountered so far. All that and imagine how players felt when it all happened again in Pikmin 4. Awesome moment. They actually remixed that track in Pikmin 4, and somehow made it even scarier then the original. Take a listen if you don't believe me.

Some context for the earthbound song: (vague spoilers version): The pleasing song that plays during the middle is part of the fight, so it's more of a cutscene playing and it then changes to the extra cursed song, so it's not just done for a "fuck you" (heavy spoilers version): the mechanical sounds are both giygas being somewhat mechanical and your characters being in robot bodies since they had to surgically remove their souls and place them there to travel back in time for the final fight (organic matter can't travel in time) and the pleasant melody: you find out that nothing is effective against giygas, and the only option left is praying, eventually those prayers reach everyone you've helped along the way and they basically send you their energy, in that moment is when the song plays, and it's actually a song you've been collecting through the entire game (which also does some crazy stuff with the protagonist), also a reference to the first mother game where you also collect a song that is actually the lullyby the final boss's (adoptive) mother sang to him as a baby (the boss is the same as the one in earthbound)

lol it's funny the way the Earthbound music is structured you basically almost went through the final boss yourself. The xylophone part of the Giygas theme isn't supposed to be scary. It's the song called the 8 melodies which in the context of the fight is acting sort of as a beacon of hope.
@mikedacoolnerd788
@mikedacoolnerd788 Ай бұрын
The Theme is structured ingeniously honestly, especially in context with the game. The parts leading up to 8 Melodies embodies a feeling of unease and hoplessness from the character's POV. 8 Melodies itself like you said acts as a beacon of hope; it also conveys a sort of innocence that in context with the fight makes Giygas remember their "humanity". (The song has such an impact on Giygas because while the 8 melodies in Earthbound and Mother 1 are different, they still represent similar things; nostalgia and innocence. All this to say the 8 Melodies in Mother 1 is a lullaby that Giygas's adopted Mom used to sing to them when they were little) This makes them deeply unstable. The song afterwards becomes much more chaotic as it is now supposed to represent Giygas's state of being.

i really recommend listening to Dead By Daylight's chase music. all of the killers have a theme that plays in 4 parts; 3 of them play when the killer is in close proximity, and 1 plays during a chase. i've been obsessed with the music because they all have a lot of depth and character put into them, "The Trickster" is my favourite out of all of them since they're not included in the game's official soundtrack, you'll have to go to DBDLeaks' channel and use the "Chase Music" playlist. some of them were changed before releasing so they're separated by PTB and Live versions

Here's one for the next time you do one of these! "Kyouki he no Kairou (Corridor to Insanity)" from the Higurashi no Naku Koro ni visual novel OST. The visuals of the Giygas fight really help sell the whole thing, just listening to the music you lose a bit of the context. And also some of the text that appears, lines like "You cannot perceive the nature of Giygas's attack!" and IIRC, it even will sometimes randomly cause random status effects on your characters. As the fight goes on, the background gets more and more twisted and distorted to match the distorted noise in the music. The "beautiful kids music" you hear is a cutscene that plays in the middle of the battle and is not part of the battle itself.

Something that is really important to these tracks (and any track) is also the visual side of things, like with submerged castle you're in a dank and dark cave with creatures out of this world, then out of nowhere a giant humanoid creature with two large rollers drops from the sky and you are told that there is no way to kill it, you have no choice but to run, lest you get crushed by the thing. For me that's what makes the submerged castle so frightening, knowing that you gotta get to the next floor as quickly as possible or it'll appear and make your life hell. I would say you could put the relevant footage of these levels/parts alongside the music so you can get the full effect of each track but what you're doing now still works well as it lets you fully focus on the music itself. Also I know a bunch of disturbing vgm songs I can suggest for a part two to this video, just let me know and I can type them all out. : D

I want to add! Because, of course I do. One of my most favourite unsettling video game tracks will always be from Illusion of Gaia "Signs of the Past" because it's haunting, somewhat unnerving, but beautiful. As a bonus, it's not just lovely by itself but fits the scene melancholically well the first time it plays in the game. Sure, in the game it might be more mournful and sad than really scary, but have it loop into your ear for a few rounds and the shadows in your room will move differently. Also, low-key unnerving but not overly bad: "Magus's Castle", Chrono Trigger. Basically the complete OST of Shadow of Memories. I couldn't find a playlist with actual track names, but the ones I have in my "unsettle" playlist are: "Track 6 - 2000A" and "Track 26 - Time Traveller". Honourable mention: "Spain" and "City of Lost Souls" from Terranigma. The "call to action" mood is a bit too strong for them to be really scary but there's still something unpleasant-in-a-good-way about them, especially if you have been there. "Barran Land" is a good one, too, but sounds a bit "thin" to me in its 16-bit-area glory, I think it's similar to "Magus's Castle" but falls a bit short of being as impactful to me. I think I listened to a remix or orchestra version before which gave it what it needed but since it's not original in-game music, it doesn't count. And now my top most unnerving, unsettling tracks that I do not listen to and have always muted in the game: Secret of Mana, "Ceremony" and "The Oracle". Similar to Terranigma, they aren't quiet and subtle, but where Terranigma gives me this "Come on, let's do this!" push that JRPG tracks from the 90s loved to put in their tracks, those two Secret of Mana tracks tell me to get out of there, or else...! They're more scary in a threatening, terrorising way than giving the creepy chills way. Sorry, I'm not a musician, I do the best I can to describe it in my layman's terms.

Has Marco heard the scary Minecraft music discs? Some parts of them are not music persay, but an assortment of unnerving and uncomfortable sounds put together so they can vaguely tell a story. But I love the idea that Minecraft, this game most people have probably viewed as a 'kids game' at some point in their life, has some of the most terrifying series of sounds in the form of music discs, that I've heard. For anyone unaware, I'm talking about the numbered discs - 5, 11, and 13. Also apparently, when you play them all together each at a specfic delay, they match up to tell a story through these sounds.

The interesting part about video game music is how context-based it is sometimes. A track that’s not all that scary on its own might me absolutely fucking TERRIFYING when you’re actually playing it. Though, it does speak to how good some of the tracks really are (looking at you Submerged Castle) when they make a chill go up your spine without ever even HAVING the context. Also, some recommendations if a part 2 is ever made: First, Not Safe from the Off OST is wonderfully terrifying. And the Wraithmarsh Theme from Fable 2, while more context-based, is just a wonderfully spooky track.

I'd like to tell you more about Giygas battle theme in Earhbound (although someone might have already done it). It's not just scary and disturbing but also very sad. You enter to a big place that looks like flesh, like the gutts of someone, or maybe a uterus. You found a strange red creature you've just been told is the embodiment of pure evil with no mind. You can hear some weird and disturbing music, I think that it sounds like you've just encountered something incredibly dangerous. As you keep going on the battle, Giygas calls out your name, you can tell that it has some innocence and thinks that you are friends, but keeps on atacking, it's like if it did it unintentionally, but its attacks are brutal. You and your friends are about to die. As you struggle to survive, Paula (the one who has the strongest magic powers) prays from the bottom of her heart asking for strength. That's when you can hear that variation that sounds like an organ. She does this many times, and the friends you've met along the journey have an uneasy feeling and decide to start praying for your behalf, and that's what actually hurts Giygas. The music gets more intense, you can tell Giygas is hurt, but it says things like 'I'm happy', 'It's not right', 'I feel good', 'I'm so sad', 'It hurts, Ness', you begin to think that you are doing something wrong but you have to do it anyway. And finally, Ness's mother (your mother) has the same uneasy feeling, and starts praying for her son and his friends. That's when you can hear the nice melody, that melody reminds you of your mother and your home. That causes Giygas great damage, and so starts the final part of the battle, where the music gets more erratic. In this last part, Giygas gets huge damage and is defeated, but I think I shouldn't say how that happens because it's a big surprise. I can't recommend this game enough. It was a big experience for me and made me feel things that I can't put into words. Just listening to this music made me feel really sad, at this part of the game you've been through a lot of things, being just a child with his friends exploring the world.

If you want another song from a series you think wouldn’t be scary, try World of Drawcia from Kirby Canvas Curse! Also, Giygas’s theme combined with the story context and the atmosphere and that fucking dialogue result in Giygas being the scariest final boss in any video game ever and it’s not even that much of a debate. The series director of Mother mentioned how Giygas in Mother 2 was meant to be a representation of his own childhood trauma (hence the Giygas dialogue taken straight from a r*pe and murder scene in a horror movie he walked in on as a child), as well as a controlled space where kids could face horror in a game themselves

Would love a part 2! One that comes to mind for me is the "Corrupted Dragon" theme from Breath of the Wild. I remember being chilled and transfixed when I encountered it in the game for the first time; the feeling of wrong-ness is so palpable, even if you've barely encountered the normal or "purified" dragon theme. Like most things in the game you just sort of stumble upon it, and it immediately feels like you've found something far more ancient and devastating (devastating in the sense of potential danger, but also in the sense of being unspeakably _sad_ ) than any other encounter in the game.
