Looking back on this game; I've grown to appreciate the reskins and repeats. In previous From games, you were traveling to diverse kingdoms and lands with their own history and monsters; but it Sekiro you never leave Ashina. All of these areas are just parts of a single country, so it makes sense why you'd see the same monsters and solders throughout. It's one land with one history that you're doing a deep dive into. Each Headless was once a great warrior, for which the sugars were named; so it makes sense there would be 5 of them scattered throughout the land.

I loved the gun fort! Something feels really epic about storming the area under fire of bullets streaking brightly through the blizzard, with the enemies immediately firing on you the moment you enter their sight from like 200m away. The only thing that became a bit annoying is the big enemies with cannons, since in a big gauntlet they were difficult to take down quickly, and also getting overwhelmed by multiple enemies close up can feel very frustrating. Oh, and also the snake eyes’ perilous grab is extremely frustrating. I’m not saying it’s hard to deal with, it just feels like such a soft movement yet it has such a long lasting hitbox, and also it executes so slowly you just feel like shouting “sekiro MOVE OUT THE WAY OF THE FUCKING GUN”

Sekiro’s combat, setting, lore, bosses and (most) mini-bosses make it my favorite fromsoft game (tied with bloodborne and DS3). That said I’ve always thought the game’s one weak point was the areas themselves. Of course there are exceptions but in a general manner they do feel either generic or plain not interesting at times. Though I don’t think lackluster area design is enough to ruin a game (hence it still being my favorite), if there is a sequel I’m hoping they improve on this aspect. Your video nailed it as always demod, honestly puts other overly done ranking content on youtube to shame, keep it up my man.
@botondkunos17744 жыл бұрын
You're wrong,the areas are the strongest part of the game,what you are referring to as "weak area design" is in reality a more complex problem.And that is the clashing of the new gameplay and progression with the old fashioned From Software area design.Good areas,but not much reason to actually explore them.
@haydeng33164 жыл бұрын
Very interesting because I think Sekiro has the most consistent area quality of all the from soft games
@lopeshick96074 жыл бұрын
Botond Kunos well I can’t possibly be wrong when I said “I’ve always thought...” as in PERSONALLY the areas aren’t very appealing to me. Also notice how I’m not talking about level design, I think the level design is very smart with cool verticality and good enemy placement. What I’m not crazy about are the environments themselves, I think you spend way too much time in regular villages and it feels generic compared to fromsoft’s more out there areas. There are caves and illusion forests but overall I feel most the environments you go through fail to be nearly as interesting and creative as foutainhead palace and senpou temple for example. Minor complaint tho, didn’t ruin the experience in any way for me. As a reverse example, I think DS2 has good area design, but terrible level design, iron keep looks cool, but its placement above a poison valley makes no sense, crown of the old iron king dlc looks amazing, but some enemy placement there is downright atrocious.
@scottbecker43674 жыл бұрын
I think almost all of sekiro's areas are pretty average, though consistently so. None of them are particularly bad, but only a couple are really solid. I would say fountainhead palace and ashina castle reach the great area level, but only senpou temple and maybe hirata estate reached the good area level. All the rest are average at best. They're consistent which is nice, but few of them really stand out.

Another thing I truly adore in fountainhead, is the moment you enter the Nobels (red robes) area. It is small but puts a twist on the area typical to from. @Igneous013 жыл бұрын
I actually really like Mibu Village mob design. It's like the developers challenging themselves to create an enemy that is super weak, yet challenging for the player. Well when you have 6 ghosts attacking and chasing you while also being leg trapped by those underground ghosts, it's easy to appreciate how even the weakest enemies can be extremely dangerous when they are also undead like you. It was an interesting challenge clearing the entire village of all the enemies in one run.

Snake eyes Shirafuji and Shirahagi are easily some of the hardest mini bosses in the game. I think in your mini boss ranking you put the end game seven ashina spears as the hardest, but I beat him on my first try. The snake eyes killed me the most out of any mini boss I think, their gun blast comes out so fast and is hard to read, it has to be deflected or dodged and can’t be blocked otherwise you take damage. Their perilous attack absolutely melts your hėalth bar. O’rin messed me up too a handful of times before I got good enough at deflecting to beat her. The only thing holding it back is the palace nobles are not my favorite enemy type, and the actual above ground level could’ve been a bit better. I wish it was larger with a bit more variety of buildings you can explore. In total though it was an absolute pleasure and they saved the best for last. Ashina castle is a close second though, and even though you return there a few times, they managed to make it good enough that it doesn’t feel disappointing going back there

was so damn happy when i found out a way to only kill one cannon man and still get a stealth blow on snake eyes in the depths, made that fight infinetly less infuriating

Personally I don't mind reskins ! I struggled a lot on the Shigaraki guy in the swap on my first playthrough, and when I encountered him the 2nd time I was first very triggered but after trying to fight and win easily, it re-enforced my feeling of progression and getting better !!

Honestly the first two areas are just my favorite, the ashina outskirts and the first ashina castle. Were just simple, nice and best with multiple bosses. And runner ups for some of the best quests. Then my third favorite has to be ashina castle first invasion and then the second invasion, basically I love the castle in all three ways. I also love senpou temple, I hate the sunken valley and the mibu village tho.

No surprise with #1. When I first walked in with that music and sunlight reflecting in the water, I was just overwhelmed with the atmosphere and otherworldly beauty of it all.

I think you got Gun Fort wrong. Yes, there's a thousand snipers with infinite aggro range, but that's the point. You're MEANT to run through the area as fast as possible, and the Gun Fort's design actually works really well in allowing you to do that with multiple branching paths and generous grapple points. In this video, I can see footage of you literally stopping to block and trying to see the snipers from afar. That's clearly the wrong approach, as you know you'll get pelted by bullets if you stop. You also make it sound like you're desperately trying to dodge shots as you go through the area. As long as you keep moving, you WILL NOT get hit. The snipers don't lead their shots at all, so as long as you're grappling or making use of your infinite sprint, you'll be fine. You WILL get hit if you stay still, which is what you did. I love that FROM designed an area that encourages speedrunning, as it's a tactic most players use in their games anyway (when making their way back to bosses and such). Everything you complained about was an intentional design decision which works well in Gun Fort's context. They only become negative points if you try to trudge through it like any other area. No wonder you called it a "frustrating slog"

I've always loved that moment when you exit through the window in ashina castle and see the battle going on below you, with it being taken to the rooftops and beyond as you make your way to the outskirts

Nah DS3's color pallet is perfect. Giving it more color ruins the mood of the game. It's supposed to look lacking in color due to the world being even more sickly and waning than any of the previous games.

theDeMocracy: Number 10 is an optional area with optional lore. Church from RVB: You know what? You could bitch about anything, couldn't you? On a serious note though, this is a really solid vid. The Guardian/Headless Ape is one of my favorite bosses in that entire game. Very Bloodborne/Soulsie.

Great list. I honestly agree to all that. Although this isn't a specific area but I believe that poison swamp where you have those annoying monkeys and giant snake in the cave is the worst. I hate those white monkeys and f***ing wall monsters. Abandoned Dungeon held up to it's name. It was abandoned by people, monsters, gamers and game developers. I honestly forgot about abandoned dungeon in my second playthrough. Took me couple of minutes to remember how I got to Senpou Temple.

Something about Senpou Temple that I don't think was mentioned in the video. This place, combined with relatively early point in the game where you can access it, is a perfect farming location for candies. Each type of monk has a chance to drop one of these consumables, and you can easily stealth kill a number of them thanks to the bushes. Considering how close the statue is, relative to the number of monks you can find on the hill leading to the temple itself, this place allows you to be less paranoid over wasting your consumables on lesser fights, as you know you can get them later. It definitely had an effect on me, as in my first run I pretty much never used candies, outside of few bosses. But the second run, I would munch on them regularly when facing tougher enemies.

It is relatively common

I mean once you’ve 100%ed the game and have nothing to spend it on then sure, but lump of grave wax is by far the limiting factor in the prosthetic upgrades. Even more than lapis. You have to late game grind for the grave wax to get all prosthetics, there isn’t any other upgrade material that’s like that

I absolutely love the Fountainhead Palace and believe it deserves its spot in the top 3. However, those 'Enfeebling' enemies really pull down its ranking for me. As you say, they are fantastic at forcing you into a stealth mindset and testing those skills, which is amazing for a first playthrough. On subsequent playthroughs, however, those enemies slow your progress down to a crawl, forcing you to repeat a stealth section you've already mastered and by that point is just tedious. That single section on later playthroughs, when I just want to sprint through and get back to the dragon boss, really pulls the Fountainhead Palace behind my personal favorite area, Hirata Estate (solely because of the Owl Father boss. Best boss in the game)
