I'm probably one of the few people I know who would say that BTO is in my top 5 of favorite rock bands, but here's why. They rock just as hard as anyone, but their lyrics are CLEAN, a novel idea for the 70s! They don't waste time singing about Satan, drugs, and alcohol--you have AC/DC and other heavy metal bands for that. They also didn't get bogged down in politics and mystical adventures. They were all about working hard and having good clean fun, simple d,own-to-earth living like I live every day. They were certainly not the "prettiest" band in rock. Groupies probably avoided them like a plague, but that kept them safe from all the STDs that all those pretty bands in the 70s and 80s went through

1 - Not Fragile 2 - Four Wheel Drive 3 - BTO II 4 - BTO (debut) 5 - Head On 6 - BTO (reunion) 7 - Bachman & Turner 8 - Freeways 9 - Rock n Roll Nights 10 - Street Action "Not Fragile" is one of the greatest hard rock albums ever recorded. There isn't one second of filler or weak material. The sound is monstrous and is still one of the heaviest sounding albums ever.

Hello, B.T.O. is one of the most "Underrated Bands" in the history of music. Loved this video. Been a fan since the beginning. They sold out Three Rivers Stadium here in the Pittsburgh, Pa area back in the 70s. They were the "Headline" band. This is pure natural Rock n Roll music with purpose n drive. Writing, Singing and Performing "LIVE" is this reason people came to the show. The talent in this band is "Off the Charts" They can hang with all the big names in the Rock and Roll World. Keep up the great work. BTO lives forever !!!

As I’m Canadian, I grew up with these albums, but haven’t heard them since the 70’s. I clearly remember when the first BTO came out, “Give Me Your Money Please” and “Hold Back the Water” got quite a bit of airplay here, and then “Blue Collar” was their breakthrough single. Actually, I was always a big fan of Brave Belt, Randy’s post-Guess Who/pre-BTO band. I believe they did two albums.

Great list! The BTO catalogue is so good (I dig the Ironhorse debut from ‘79 a lot too). I agree about there being little separation between the first four records. As killer as “II” or “Four Wheel Drive” are, the debut comes in at #2 on my ranking. While the 2nd and 4th albums had individual tracks I prefer, the first album is just stacked with strong cuts from start to end. “Get Yourself In Trouble”, which flat out crushes, is probably my favorite tune by the band. The gem from the “Freeways” album is “Down Down”, a cool cut (and arguably the most classic era BTO sounding song on the album) that received heavy rotation here, and remains a “KSHE Klassic” on the iconic St. Louis rock station.

First band I got into in 1974 as a teenager which put me on the path of hard rock. I have an original copy of Not Fragile on vinyl I still play today. They only toured the UK one date in 1974 for that album at Hammersmith Odeon in London with Thin Lizzy in support. I kept the page advert from Sounds newspaper, I still have it somewhere. They played The Garage in London to promote the Bachman & Turner album. I got to see them, that is the only other time they played the UK. Lifetimes ambition fulfilled. They were so much part of my youth and gave so much pleasure listening to their music, then and now. Thank you Randy Bachman!

One good anecdote. I saw the BTO line up during what turned out to be their last tour in 2004. During my chat with C.F. (Fred) Turner backstage at the Turning Stone Casino arena in upstate New York, he revealed that he was pleased with a new song he had written and hoped one day it would be released. That song was Rollin' Along which ended up six years later on the Bachman & Turner album. How cool is that?

One album worth considering if the boundaries are to be relaxed is the 1981 album by Union which was the post Ironhorse, pre Bachman Turner Overdrive reunion project from Randy Bachman & C F Turner. Great tracks include On Strike (the title track) and Mainstreet USA. In addition, Trial By Fire from 1996 has the classic BTO line up except for Randy Murray standing in for Randy Bachman following the former's exiting the band for the second time. Two original songs, three new covers plus re-recordings of classic BTO songs. Worth exploring!

I attended their very first tour date in November 1973 at The Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary Alberta and still have my ticket stub. The ticket price was $4.75. Of course they played all songs from their debut and a few Brave Belt tunes. Still is my favorite BTO album with "Blue Collar " my sentimental favorite. They were awesome with Tom Northcott as the opening act.

Hi Pete killer video on a unsung HEAVY band and excellent ranking of BTO's records. I agree Not Fragile is thier best and a good intro to anyone unfamiliar with them, a young guy I worked with about 30 years ago saw the Van Halen show and asked me if BTO were any good and I said they were a crankin heavy rock band the were really big in the early to later 70's and that he might recognize some of thier tunes. When I saw him later he thought BTO almost stole the show he recognized and liked most of thier songs and was pleasantly surprised on how tight and Rocking they were. Great band. And Pete I'm glad to see your channel taking off you deserve it.

Saw Randy Bachman on his recent Vinyl Tap tour. He's got a very popular radio show up here in Canada where he talks about songs and the stories behind them. In concert he played ALL the hits while explaining the story behind them. It was excellent! People think American Woman is about the statue of liberty or some Anti-American anthem. They were on the edge of being too lightweight and hit makers but Randy's rough edges always made the difference. They filled the gap that CCR left when they broke, also the singing is a bit similar. 1. Head On (It has all the classic BTO plus some little adding variations that make it more interesting) 2. Not Fragile (The classic album that defined this band. A bit much of "all the same", that is why I rank Head On above it, it is more open with new ideas.) 3. BTO II 4. BTO 1984 5. Four Wheel Drive 6. BTO 1973 7. Freeways 8. Street Actions 9. Rock' n' Roll Nights I agree with the Bachman & Turner but I did not include it because I thought it was not allowed (I do my lists always before I listen to yours).

I always loved Head On. Every song is good on that album. You mentioned that the cover was kinda lame, but back in the day (I had this on vinyl when it first came out) the cover had perforated edges and you could unfold it into a large poster that had all four of of their faces. I always thought that was cool. I would put Head On at least number two or three. Not Fragile I agree is number one.

The first BTO album was originally going to be called "Brave Belt III", Mercury records advised the band to change their name, They chose Bachman-Turner and got the Overdrive from the title of a Canadian truckers magazine. "Brave Belt I" featured Randy Bachman, Robin Bachman and Chad Allen, so it can't be classed as a BTO album, but "Brave Belt II" featured Randy Bachman, Robin Bachman, Tim Bachman and Fred Turner, the original lineup of BTO.

No mention of their 1996 album "Trial by Fire", the album had reworks of their popular songs with five brand new BTO recordings at the time, they were the title track "Trial by Fire" , "Testify", "Nothin' Comes East", "A Sense of Danger" and a BTO cover of The Animals sixties hit "House of the Rising Sun". I personally think it's a creditable album and the only BTO album to feature guitarist Randy Murray. I'd slot it between their 1984 self titled album and "Freeways". Also no mention of "Madison Avenue" on the "Street Action" album. it's my favourite BTO song.

We agree with you David. A good and we suspect a very rare album that would be difficult to purchase. Two original tunes Trial By Fire & Nothin' Cones Easy plus three covers alongside a clutch of BTO re-recordings. Great artwork on the cover too. BTO also shows up on a 1988 soundtrack album which has the boys record a cover of Wooly Bully.

I agree mostly with your rankings, although personally I put "BTO@ at No. 1 , followed closely by "Not Fragile and then Four Wheel Drive. I have not heard the Bachman-Turner cd, but I will have to try to find a copy and check it out. One note about Rock And Roll Nights-my favorite tune on this album, which I bought out of a cut out bin (remember those??)was the final trasck on the album-"Amelia Erheart"....a VERY different kind of track for this band, yet to me it worked, especially the suprisingly mellow extended ending...it just hit me right, what can I say? Keep up the fine work Pete!!

Love this series. It's making me check out tunes I've never heard before. Great stuff. Have you ranked the KISS studio albums?

Great band... Yeah, there's a kind of simplicity to them, but I like the riffy quality, and also Turner's vocals were amazing... 9. Street Action (Can't remember anything I liked off this album) 8. Rock n' Roll Nights (Haven't heard this in a long time, but I remember there were some good songs) 7. 1984 release (Ok album, I really dig Toledo and a couple of others) 6. BTO I (Not one of the best from the original lineup, but there's good stuff like Hold Back the Water, Stayed Awake All Night and Thank You For the Feeling) 5. Head On (Probably BTO's first atypical album, but I think Blair does a fine job and the variations are refreshing... Find Out About Love is a favorite) 4. Four Wheel Drive (Standard classic BTO, nothing groundbreaking but pretty solid) 3. Freeways (Underrated album in my opinion, I like it front to back) 2. BTO II (One of the strongest albums to showcase the riffy quality and terrific vocals I mentioned earlier... Blown and Let it Ride are 2/5 of my all-time favorite BTO songs) 1. Not Fragile (So many favorites stacked in one disc, I think five out of my twenty favorite BTO tracks are on here)

Hi Pete..Liked your BTO list...But I might have ranked the 1984 album a little higher. I have a soft spot for this one. It came out when I worked at a Philly market radio station..I was PD and MD and really pushed that album..."For The Weekend" and "Service With A Smile" became local hits... BUT I have to admit my very favorite was "Head ON"..BTW I had the pleasure of meeting Randy Bachman 3 times..Once in 1998, then with Fred Turner in Atlantic City NJ in 2013 and just last year in Annapolis MD where my wife and I were invited on his tour bus where we also met other members of the band including Tal Bachman

Hi Pete. I'm surprised that you rated Street action above Freeways. Can't split your top four as they are my top four.

Same order as you but I gave up after Head On, Turner's vocals are one of the best, I heard a few tracks off that one they couldn't use the whole name and it wasn't bad from what I heard.

For Head-on, the cover on the CD would’ve been a secondary cover for the vinyl that turned into a poster. Cut along the bottom edge and you’ve got all four members. The album cover itself was just the band’s logo and car crash wreck on the back.
