Ranking the Studio Albums: Marillion

Never listened to Marillion nor gave them much thought. After watching this video I can appreciate their musical work and have started to get into them. They are awesome.

That's great! I've always thought they might be hard to get into for someone who didn't listen to them in the heady days of the 80's but i guess the music has persevered over time. I thought maybe the production or Fish's over the top delivery and lyrics might be too much for later audiences but i was wrong.🙂

This was a terrific show and I love it when Steven comes on because you both know so much about the music and bands. I know you may worry about the length on the conversation but I love hearing the stories and seeing how much the music means to both of you...Music is the one thing that Guys can get emotional about ...and it’s okay. And the most important thing....I had never heard Marillion and I love what I’ve heard so far. Can’t wait to really dig in to their catalog and like you always say...that’s what the show is all about.

Happy to say that I love both periods and got to see them with Fish and Hogarth. 10 - Happiness is the Road (I just ordered this... will rediscover and it can move up) 9 - Seasons End 8 - This Strange Engine 7 - Radiation 6 - Fear 5 - Marbles 4 - Misplaced Childhood 3 - Clutching at Straws 2 - Afraid of Sunlight 1 - Brave A band I adore with every fibre and atom of my body. If I were to make a movie I would even use their music to that. They are the soundtrack to my life and put me in a zen state when listening to them with headphones. It took quite a while but I love FEAR the best. It's such a deep album that with each listen reveals more and more! Each song has so many facets and angles, it takes a while to take it all in. A very satisfying album in the end!

I just want to thank both of you guys. I had only ever heard Kayleigh on the radio here in Atlanta back in 1985 or so. That wasn't exactly a song that inspired me to investigate further. They weren't a band that ever made any other airplay down here so I never gave them a fair shake. I'm rectifying that problem now. Thanks again!

I prefer the band with the entry of H. One of the characteristics I love about them is that they’re bold to always try something new; somewhat like The Beatles did during their short career. And to me, even Marillion’s weakest album is better than a lot of releases from other bands. Of their latest studio releases F.E.A.R. is an amazing album. I heard the song “Lavender” probably about 8 years ago and didn’t like it much so I never checked these guys out. Another band that suffered from lack of promotion was Crack the Sky. Their label Lifesong released the self titled debut in 1975 and even when Rolling Stone magazine named in record of the year and Wolfman Jack played it up on air the label didn't know what to do with it. They couldn't get the vinyl in stores when it was being played on the radio. People just moved on. Yet in some select cities where you could purchase it they had a huge fanbase. They still perform and release albums to this day. People fly from all over the world to see them live. Extremely underrated band.

Did you know that the vinyl release of Brave features a double groove on the final side of the album, providing two endings to the story? The first groove plays "The Great Escape" as heard on the CD, followed by "Made Again", providing the happy ending. The second groove plays "The Great Escape (Spiral Remake)" and 7 minutes of water noise, providing the downer ending...

Awesome, I've been waiting for this. You guys are correct the early artwork with from Mark Wilkinson is great, so good he did work for Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. My list is as follows... 1) Misplaced Childhood - Still listen to this regularly, at least once a month. 2) Clutching at Straws - This gets barely beaten by Childhood. Fantastic album, I would consider this a concept album as it seems to be autobiographical in some degree for Fish. 3) Script for A Jesters Tear 4) Seasons End 5) Fugazi - Side note the list from 3-5 could change by the day 6) Brave 7) Afraid of Sunlight 8) This Strange Engine 9) Holidays in Eden 10) - I would prefer B'sides Themselves over the rest of the catalogue, That being said I am definitely tracking down Marbles and F.E.A.R. because of you guys(Thanks).

My fav by far is "Clutching at Straws". I recall at the time many fans not liking it, as it was less proggy than previous albums, but for me it flows so well from song to song and perfectly captures the descent of an alcoholic.

I will say that F.E.A.R is in my top 5. It just has an enchanting and dark quality that I love. After hearing The Leavers, I instantly fell in love with that album. I love every song on it. My favorite Marillion album is between Brave and Clutching at Straws. I’m probably going to have go with Clutching, but I love Brave so much. I think the Hogarth era has some of the most underrated material I’ve ever heard. The Fish era material may be the most well known albums, but there’s some absolutely great material from the Hogarth era. Great video guys!

This is a fantastic watch. Steven & Pete hit my nail straight on the head re: Brave & Clutching respectively - both arguably the pinnacle of the concept album to me - brilliant yet brutal journeys of dark beauty that leave you drained and drenched in sweat. There's a short list of such albums in rock music, and a band that created TWO of them (THREE if you include Misplaced) has reached the elite high ground of the genre.

Thanks guys, really excellent assessment of the back catalogue - I've been onboard since Script and stuck with the band throughout, definitely preferring the Hogarth era. I suspect every fan would come up with a different selection, so for me, Sounds that Can't Be Made and This Strange Engine would definitely make the top ten, but don't ask me which I'd strip out from your choices. I agree with Steven regarding the band's status during the Holidays In Eden period (and for some years later) - they headlined Cumbria Rock in 1991 and you literally could not give tickets away...only a couple of thousand were in the stadium when Marillion came on which was a difficult watch.

Kudos to both of you, Pete and Steven. This was a great listen. Never mind the length, it's the discussion, anecdotes, insights and passion for the music that makes it a compelling and engaging hour spent. A good double act. Btw, I too missed an opportunity to see them early on - in 1982 when they played at Nostell Priory in the UK (with Jethro Tull headlining). I couldn't go, but a couple of my mates did and kindly reminded me about it for many, many years afterwards. B***ards. Personally prefer that era, with Script and Fugazi my favourites.

Just listened to the 2021 Remastered version of Fugazi and this remaster definitely did something for the album to me. I always liked it but also there was something that disturbed me, without being able to really grab it. This is gone. It opened a new level for me. Excellent album. I highly suggest the remaster!

Objectivly-Clutching is best! Personaly-My favourite is Seasons End! The Space is my favourite Marillion song!! That middle build up section is phenomenal!! I am an exception within Marillion fans because I prefer the Steve Hogarth albums. It conveys much more emotion, in my opinion. I really like Fish, but he tries to imitate Peter Gabriel too much and it bothers me a little. My Top 5: 1- Seasons End 2- Script for a Jester Tear 3- Marbles 4- Brave 5- Clutching at Straws

Eduardo Pereira I’m more a Hogarth era fan as well. What they have become is a rock-jazz-pop quintet. If you look too much for prog you won’t find it and you won’t move past the Fish era. Marbles is a masterpiece. This Strange Engine, Brave not far behind. This doesn’t take away from the Fish era. Script and Misplaced Childhood are brilliant but the other two, Fugazi and clutching at Straws are highly overrated.

In my opinion, one of the best bands ever. Became a fan around '84 after hearing "Script". Never got to see them live until "Seasons End". Struggled with many h era songs, but every album has had an impact on my life at some moment. I go to every show I can, when they come to the Philadelphia and DC region. Fish, as well.

Great show guys, went and got Script on the release date and had all the Fish era albums and singles. Never even heard a Hogarth song that I know of, nothing against him but have never came across any Marillion since Fish left. Favourite albums for me 1/Script 2/ Childhood 3/Fugazi 4/ Straws. To be fair there were so many additional songs released as singles there were like 6 albums worth of Fishery! Lady Nina a B side, come on that was class. Amazing KISS posters Steven, Dynasty/Unmasked very cool.

I find a lot of people think that about CAS. When it came out I was deeply disappointed in it and felt they'd finally lost whatever prog credentials they had, but they were never full on prog like say Yes or King Crimson and over the years I came to appreciate CAS as the best of what they did do in those first four albums.

I'm into this band since 1983. Saw them them 4 times with Fish (Fugazi tour 1984: Cologne, Mannheim. Misplaced CH tour 1985: Duesseldorf.1987 Clutching tour Heidelberg. My first Steve Hogart experience was in october 11, 1989 Duesseldorf Philipshalle. Been to countless concerts since then. I still like the fish material, but i can honestly say: Steve Hogarth is the man. Top Album F.E.A.R.

Great show! I saw Marillion shortly after Hogarth joined in a little bar here in London Canada. It was in the middle of winter and there were only a few dozen people showed up. I couldn't believe it, these guys played sold out stadiums not that long before! Anyway they still put on a great show despite the small crowd and crappy Canadian weather. H was playing those finger cymbal percussion things back then. I was doubtful the band could continue after Fish left, but that show kept me a fan.

I saw Marillion at the Hammersmith Odeon in '83. I was working security at the venue and met Fish and the other lads backstage after the show. I bought "Script" but didnt play it much,then a few years later,saw them at the hammy odeon and the live show just blew my mind and they reminded me of early Genesis at their very best,Market Sq Heroes was a highlight among a show of highlights. Seen them many times since and love both era's but gun to head? fish just edges it for the glory days era.

Hey Pete, this was just fantastic. Forgive me but when I first saw your guest, Steven, I thought i was looking at a slightly younger version of FIsh, especially when I heard his Scottish accent. I've always enjoyed you ranking albums but this was really special, and it brought up many memories. Like you, I too live in Orange county so when you spoke about the Chance, I knew exactly what you were referring to as I've seen a few shows there. Unfortunately, Marillion's gig on Clutching tour wasn't one of them as I was sick as a dog. My buddy told me all about it and I was really p'd off. At least there's Loreley. I discovered the band when their debut album came out, and was fortunate to see them on Fugazi tour at the old Ritz in NYC. It was a sublime experience and as Steven reminisced, it was really cool to see Fish climbing the rafters to the balcony of the the club (before Eddie Vedder, lol). After the show, we gave our programs to a security guy and he came back with autographs from all five guys. To me, Clutching was their most mature album where the band came into its own and obviously it's the most personal and melancholy album from Fish's viewpoint, and like you, it's my #1. Like probably every old Marillion fan, I was disappointed when Fish left and very curious how the band would continue with H. Season's End dismissed those fears and I got a chance to see their show in NYC at the new Ritz (old Studio 54), with Dream Theater opening the show. If you know the story, what made this1989 gig special is that Marillion who loved DT's first LP, requested that Charlie Dominici play at that gig even though he was already sacked by DT. Holidays in Eden was a disappointment, but Brave was a watershed moment, a tremendous concept album that took me a while to get into (like Fugazi). Marillion didn't play around NYC until '95 when we saw them at Tramps; tiny club with maybe a couple hundred people but it allowed us to stand right by the stage; it was a tremendous gig with lots of good vibes from the audience. The band felt that and played 3 encores. After the show we hung around outside and met some of the guys, and Steve Hogarth chatted with us for quite a long time. Totally unpretentious; really cool guy. This was the last time I saw Marillion live. I lost interest after that until Marbles, and as much as I tried to like the music that came afterwards, I have hard time getting into it. Again, many Thanks to you and Steven for the trip down memory lane.

Brave might be considered dark but if you have experienced some of what it is about and been in that same place, and empathise, it is in fact incredibly uplifting to have it there allowing you to return when you need that same empathy back. And that is whatever ending, the happy coda or sad spiral mix. When H signs “you’re holding on” and you know exactly how that feels and all of The Great Escape... it’s a life saver. In Falling from the Moon, Steve R puts down not only a sublime guitar break, but one of the most emotional on vinyl ever. Comparable with Carlos Santana’s Song of the Wind or Neil reaching the end of Like a Hurricane. It’s not just a special album but for some of us, a very very important album that has been a great help. Always loved Clutching at Straws, again I think for some, there is empathy with the end of that album too, Very lucky to have both Marillion’s. Pete Pardo, go see Marillion whenever you can, it’s a great show - always something different about the tracks live. I know this was about studio albums but honourable mention to Made Again anyway - Live in London, Rotterdam & Paris, fantastic set and Brave Live! P.S. Love what you do on KZbin! Xx

eeh...saw Marillion (the only time I've seen them) at Milton Keynes UK in 1986, dubbed 'Garden Party'. I went mainly for Jethro Tull, who were one of the support acts (great set). But Marillion were amazing. About half way through the main set Fish says "This is Pseudo Silk Kimono". They play Pseudo Silk Kimono. It goes into Kayleigh; which goes into Lavender Blue...we (20,000? of us) realise what's happening. They play the whole of Misplaced Childhood without a break, one of the best live musical experiences I've had.

My favorite band! Misplaced Childhood was the album I discovered first, but then I went back and forth between Fish and h albums. h has definitely become my favorite of the two, but honestly all of it is good to great. im just glad to see Marillion content, i love both the Fish Era and Hogarth Era, i also love how every Hogarth cd sounds different from 1 release to the next, i dont wanna hear, the same formula as it was during Fish Era, , both singers have there distinct sounds but heres the difference Hogarth can sing any Fish Era song no way that Fish could handle a Hogarth Era song . im too big a fan to rate the cds but if i had to only pick 5 they would be 1. Brave 2 . Marbles 3. Misplaced Childhood 4. Fear 5 . Clutching at Straws and that kills me because i love sounds , and happiness seasons end but thats what top 20 lists are for

He can sing ANY Fish era song? Sing it well? Please....cut the hyperbole...You have your preferences, no problem there, but to say that he can sing any Fish song and do it justice is lying to yourself.

Great video! I've loved Marillion for more than 30 years, funny enough I started to know them about the first Hogarth album. Ive been watching for the last 6 months and seen around 50 videos, although DREAM THEATER are my favourite band of all time and i enjoyed your best to worst, this is my favourite video you have done, i love it when someone shows a real passion for an album or band and Steven showed real passion, it made me play BRAVE around midnight on my headphones, always liked the album but for some reason enjoyed it more than in the past [ Marbles has always been no 1] would love to see you guys do something with WHITESNAKE, BON JOVI, WINGER, DEF LEPPARD, RIVERSIDE OR TOTO, Keep on rocking.

What a show guys.if anybody watching hadn't heard clutching at straws I'm sure they'll go n gie it a listen so well done .those first four albums have got me through life.i always go back to them and never get fed up.what a band !

I started with the Fish era, bought "Script" in 1983, but always liked the music better than the vocals. years later, in 1989, I bought "Seasons End" and everything finally clicked into place. A great band backing one of the most powerful & versatile voices I'd ever heard. From then on, Marillion were one of my favorite bands of all time and not just a band I played once in a while. The music they have made since H joined has had far more depth and variety, and they continue to be creative. The Fish years had a sort of "sameness" where there was little growth between their 4 studio albums IMO. With H, right up the latest album "An Hour Before It's Dark", they continue to bring surprises and new sounds and ideas. For me a Marillion ranking would be the Fish albums in the 4 lowest slots and mental fight to figure out which H albums should take to top and middle positions.

Hi Pete liked the ranking of the albums of prog rock band Marillion. The banter you have with Simon Read is great, he's so in formative and passionate isn't he? Showing his singles from the band as well as the albums and artwork. Very interesting confisation whether you like prefer Fish the original lead singer now left, or his replacement Hogarth. Never really listened to Marillion but good to hear Steven again his passion for music is something I identify with. Hey Steven still waiting for that rank the albums of the Sensational Alex Harvey Band. LOL well done will give Marillion a listen.

I second that... SAHB one of rock's greatest enigmas. Theatre based hard rock with a touch of vaudville thrown in all with a Scottish Brogue. So under appreciated.
