@Aliens13374 жыл бұрын
@@drifterax7731 Yeah Certantes is pretty easy even without parrying. I will admit the boss is quite cheap still with the invisibility and teleportation, but as long as you don't get greedy, it's very manageable. EMP drone shot on him when he's visible. When he turns invisible, I just spam dodge like until he shows up and starts his attack animation, which leaves him vulnerable for a few seconds. EMP shot, get in a few hits, dodge again. The annoying part it to try and lock onto him again when he comes out from invisibility. Honestly the only boss I have problem with is the Delver Alpha (phase 2) and of course its beefed up Echo version. Bullshit damage, easily one shotting you at full health. Way too fast to parry, unless you're a God, or practiced the fight 200 times. Has enough range and AoE to still hit you if you dodged at melee range. Fast unblockable charge attack from full screen with no recovery so you can't even bait him like other bosses. On top of that, the boss is black, in a black arena, making it even harder to parry/dodge his attacks because you can't tell which one it is. That fight feels like you can do everything perfectly, but then still dies if you made one single mistake and he one shots you.

The Cervantes boss fight is designed for you to parry, as are most of the bosses. If you parry him twice, it leaves him open to a riposte for heavy damage. You may not be aware as you didn't play the original surge, but did you know there are special weapons obtainable by defeating the bosses in special ways? For most of the humanoid bosses it simply means severing their right arm, but for example Little Johnny drops 'Little Johnny's Forceps v2.0' if you sever both his unarmoured little pincer hands before killing him, and Delver can drop 'Helix of the Delver v2.0' I think if you destroy sufficient reinforced bits. These special weapons are amongst the best in the game and it adds a little layer extra during the fights.

No directional parries? Delver, Archangel and other bosses are specially designed to incorporate this game mechanic. Each enemy including bosses has an indicator that shows the number of parries required to break the guard. Little Johnny and Delver are my 2 favorite fights and the list is pretty spot on. The only gripe I have with this game is that there were only 4-5 memorable bosses and the boss fights were pretty simple and easy once you understood directional parrying.

This game is much better than the first one and I appreciate that it sets out to be a fun game to play, rather than to trick, kill and annoy the player like is common in the genre. It lets you use any weapon without having to dedicate a playthrough to pumping certain attributes like in Dark Souls, or punishing you for changing things up like The Surge 1 with the proficiency bar. You can attack freely near ledges because the attacking animations will never make you fall off the edge. The healing through attacking lets you recover from your mistakes. I didn't find any bullshit hitboxes during the entire game. There are save points next to the bosses, with either zero or 1-2 easy enemies to convert into energy along the way. There are a bunch of save points right next to enemies you can grind for good xp and materials if you want to. The drone ammo is plentiful enough to be actually usable in regular encounters. I could go on.

Each Souls and Souls like game has brought something to the table in terms of advancing the formula. Even if it fails in other aspects, the concepts they bring forth are decent enough as is. I'll be listing the unique attributes each major Souls/like had brought to the table and how they are important. Demon Souls (The Groundwork): Without Demon Souls, the groundwork of the Souls Formula would never have been formed. Dark Souls (Level Design and Atmosphere): A game can have amazing combat and enemies but if the areas look bland and stiff, they aren't gonna stand out. Dark Souls gave us amazing level design accompanied by fantastic atmosphere to set the tone of the world you are in. Dark Souls 2 (Challenge and PvP): Day what you will of Dark Souls 2 but it is personally the most legitimately challenging souls game and the most brutal. It doesn't go easy on you and if you continue to fail, it will remind you of that. In addition it had the most fun PVP method with so many covenants and arenas to fight in. Lords of the Fallen (Weight and Risk/Reward): I enjoyed the weighty/clunky nature of the game, it makes you feel like you are really walking around in hefty chunks of armor and swinging swords the size of your body that DS3 fails to display. In addition giving the player the choice to go on longer without resting at a bonfire to increase the Souls and rewards they got adds a whole new layer of self inflicting challenge for the sake of better rewards, on top of putting urgency on collecting your dropped souls should you finally die. The Surge 1 (Targetting and Resistances): The only thing to really come out of the first game was the targeting system which rewards taking the challenging approach to enemies or exploiting their weak spots to finish them quickly. Bloodborne (Enemy Design and Story): Bloodborne has by far the most diverse enemies in the entire genre that are all haunting and connect well with the amazing story. Dark Souls 3 (Magic Bar and DLC Integration): The magic bar makes magic feel much more fun as you can recover it normal without having to rest at a bonfire after using an arbitrary amount of charges till you forget how to magic. DLC in the previous games were integrated so clunky that you can tell that things are just new and wasn't meant to be there, some even requiring guides to figure out how the hell to access it. DS3 makes it easy to find the entrance to the DLCs and places them in appropriate locations that they would naturally fit in. Nioh (Stances and Loot): Nioh allows you use three stances to turn a weapon into essentially 3 different weapons, each suited for different playstyles and enemies. The loot tops it off by allowing you a constant string of progress to become stronger. Sekiro (Movement and Stealth): Sekiro allows you to play the game your way, zooming around hiding in the shadows like a ninja or charging head first like a samurai thanks to the fantastic free movement and stealth mechanics. Remnant (Coop and Replayability): Remnant has by far the most fun Coop as it allows you to run through the entire game with your friend by your side instead of only in select areas, and the randomization of the game allows for a lot of replayability with different bosses, loot, areas, etc. Code Vein (Magic Recovery and Matchmaking): Code Vein allows you to recover magic by attacking enemies, allowing you to always be on the offense to build up your combos. Matchmaking inthis gane allows you to connect with anyone from any zone youve already visited if you are helping or anyone from anywhere if you need help. The Surge 2 (Healing Recovery): The ability to recharge your healing by attacking makes it the most fun method to keep you actively fighting and on your toes. If only we could put all of them in one game.

@connorshaw76495 жыл бұрын
I dunno man, I disagree with a lot of the placements here. I see your logic, and I appreciate how thoroughly you explained each placement, but here are a few counterpoints: - Little Johnny is a cool boss, and I'd rate him decently high based on design alone. But he's not without issues. A lot of his attacks have hitboxes so precise you almost have to TRY to get hit. Even his gas clouds for broken legs won't hit you unless you hug the legs for a prolonged time. Plus, he can take forever. - Metal Armour and Shields are an annoying boss pair. Metal Armour is cool enough, but Shields is aggressive and his mortar support can flinch you into a full combo that can kill you from full health. And if you get burst down, time to fight the first form again. - I get that people like Delver, but I hate that each of his forms has nothing in common. I have to learn the timings and attacks of not two, but three separate bosses with vastly different movesets, and again, if you mess one up it's back to square one. There's a reason boss rushes are usually optional and/or post-game affairs. Sad thing is I like each of Delvers forms individually, I just hate fighting them all in a row. - I think normal enemy bosses get a bad rap in general. I mean, yeah, Nitro was an absolute mook. But someone like Cervantes, HAROLD, etc offer a fresh take on them. Their moves are similar enough that you already have some experience dodging them, but the neat little twists on attacks and their massive health bars necessitate slightly different approaches. Plus, they take less production time to make, so we get a bunch more bosses than we otherwise would have.
@rafabuda05 жыл бұрын
yeah, my problem with Delver is pretty much the same, can't say how many imes I went through the first phase without issue only to be demolished in 5 seconds on phase 2. My main issue with Cervantes is the arena size. if you don't manage to catch him when he goes invisible you'll most likely end up with your camera facing a wall. from here you either spin your camera aroud which will probably leave you open for when he teleports next to you, or you start dodging backwards blindly to try and put as much of the arena in your fov while hoping to not back yourself into a corner. I do, however, like that his hardcore kill is for cutting his left leg instead of the usual right arm.

I only have 3 complaints about The Surge 2 after playing Dark Souls 3 to the end of NG+3, and Bloodbourne. 1: Boss designs, not only for some of the reasons mentioned in this video, but also for some of the locations, like turning an area you'd normally just travel through into a makeshift boss arena. 2: Not being able to sell your weapons. The way to fix this is with weapon schematics. Keep the ability to use a weapon you just picked up, but also have a schematic for that weapon unlocked, that way you can sell the weapon and just harvest scrap from weapons you've already picked up without having to keep them in your inventory. 3: Fast travel. I know the game is supposed to be dark souls but with science and technology instead of magic and Gods, but they could have figured out a way incorporate fast travel into the game without relying on anything like magic. Perfect example off the top of my head. There could have been an NPC scientist who invented a device that allows the user to control a small cluster of nanites to act as a means of traveling between specific locations like MedBays, but he won't give it up willingly so you'd have to either do him a favor, or fight him for it. Aside from those three points, this game is basically Dark Souls 3 with a pause function.

Yeah I also did the souls dodge derp my first playthrough. The game isn't designed to be played by only dodging and potentially blocking. You're supposed to learn how to directionally parry. Some of the bosses are pretty hard if you don't know how to do it but fairly easy if you do.

Does the Surge 2 have special boss conditions like in the first game that reward weapons and armor? Should have included those when doing this list.
See I knew this game would be good. I could tell just by the amazingly passionate team behind this game. They showed great love for their game and seemed to really hope people would feel the same way. While I don’t have time or quite frankly money to get this game I really hoped it would be successful and I really hope the developers make tons of money off of this game and wish the best to them.

This game was a big improvement over the first in a lot of ways. While the story of the first is a bit better, and the creepy atmosphere is amazing, the sequel does a lot right. Here is where it did better: 1: Build viability and balance. Surge 1 issue: While the implant system completely dictating your build was a good way to prevent overleveling to absurd amounts, it made goliath builds (with the exception of Iron Maus) rather unviable. This is because the primary reason to make a heavy armour build is to be able to face tank a few hits and be less susceptible to stun. You need a rather rediculous core power level to be able to have atleast close to equal health to a lighter build, which is required to have a noticable effect on survivability, while also being able to have enough healing to pull through. This is further screwed by stamina. Since you need so much, the game pretty much sends you down a tunnel and says "thays all you can do with this", as the amount of stat implants needed to give you even close to the survivability and offensive ability as light builds leaves you with very few options. I spent the majority of the first game as a Lynx (starting operator) only player, and then switched to gorgon (powerful sentinel and argueably best set, which isn't in the sequel) for the final boss. Surge 2 fix: The surge 2 gives you 2 points to put into either health, stamina or battery for each core level. This does allwow for overleveling, but it also allows for viability. Infact, the game does an excellent job of encouraging you to try new sets. My first run ended in disaster. I never even made it half way, I had been too cocky, and some real annoying glitches made me quit. So I restarted. At first, I ran a half Vultr, halt Scavenger set for the bonus tech scrap, then I got full wraith. But just after Ezra, I hit a wall, that wall being a large number of nanite assholes who I could barely stand up to. In desperation, I crafted the Rhino, as Vultr wasn't gonna cut it. Let's just say, I'm lucky I farmed all the schematics. Single rigged Rhino allowed me to stun the nanite monsters, and was so useful with the new level system, which allows for pretty damn good tank builds, that I kept it on until I got Iron Maus, then swapped that out for good old MG cerberus. And the operator sets are no longer the single best way to play, sure you can still zip around an arena like a squirrel on crack, removing heads and slapping people 6 times in the ass before 180ing around them to do the same thing, but it isn't as op, face tanking dps healing is a viable strategy even at somewhat low levels, and each build has a use. Yeah, the stamina costs are still quite high for big tank builds, but you should hit the ideal level (22 points into stamina) fairly early. Having an absolute blast, just beat Archangel Eli. Probably gonna do NG+, buy the dlc. What I'm most surprised at is my level. This game is harder than 1. Yet I beat it at level 86 as opposed to 119 in the first with a lighter set. This game lets you do amazing builds, and I can't wait ti redo NG+ to get final Eli's v2 weapon (which evaded me because I left his legs) and to do an early tank build focused on stuff like the cerberus battery bonus with the implant that saves 3 and the one that saves you from attacks just so long as it doesn't exceed your remaining health by 150. 2: Bosses. Not only are there way more, they are overall a great improvement. 2 does have a few stinkers l, such as warden garcia being trivial and the metal armor stage of ezra being the only real negative (and a massive one at that) about that fight, and godess helana being a reskinned and trivial gaia statue, most of the bosses were enjoyable. Little johnny was a great boss mechanically, and is the first proper boss. Eli and Matriarch Celeste while basic were fun duels, and Eli's evolution over the course of the game is well done and very fun, even if I didn't die much to him. I beat his final form while being at death's door for the second half of the fight, and lets just say, the intesity of desperately trying to get another battery and avoid being finished off was amazing. 3: general. It feels better overall. The new battery system is great, and adds a few layers of depth to the game. Not only does it give you more heals(in a superior system to the first game), it lets you dismember more enemies, and it has the added bonus of determining some injectible powers. You needed it to be high for some gear set bonuses, leveling it to 75 for all 5 batteries. And you don't need to invest heavily in it that much. The regeneration and attack lifesteal heal implants are unaffected by it, but it buffs instant healing (medi-voltaic). Even with 75, it healed a bit less than half my health (regen heals 50% of max) in the end game, making it more of an emergeancy quickheal than a resource efficient maximum potential. As you level health to survive a normal amount of hits , it always heals a little, to alot less than the regen. a massive health build without battery leveling, with regen as the primary heal is just as viable as a medium health 5 battery build. The directional block implant is a great addition, and made the fights you struggled with alot more manageable. It is actually an integral part of the game design. The shield Icons you see next to boss healthbars show how many you need to pull off to stun them. It doesn't reset until you stun them, making it good for a safe parry followed by a dodge, or for a combo parry. And the counter damage is very high, ideal for breaking a targeted part, as that is always what it hits. The drone is a much stronger part if your arsenal, and is also used to open new pathways, place a hidden avatar for scrap based on how many players find it. The new weapon types are fun to use, while the old ones retain their fun too. Everything is useful. The verticality is a great aspect of the level design. Allowing for much better shortcuts and pretty views. The partial set bonuses are quite clever, as some of them make mixing and matching just as viable as using a whole set in some cases. And it all together feels smoother than the first game. The directional block is the biggest addition, and garcia is meant to teach you to use it when you acquire the implant. Seeing that the attack direction doesn't show up on your hud for most bosses, it is clear you didn't use it much. That move can net you massive damage if you stun your opponent. as well as that, a returning mehanic is the duck/jump. It was a very strong tool in the first game and even I forgot about it until near the end, mostly because the controls changed. it used to be block, then use the movemnt stick up or down to jump or duck for certain moves. They changed it to be dodging without direction input (duck)and clicking the jump button (jump). They are super useful and you should have used them. The directional block analyser is probably the only non-heal implant that is a must have for the whole game. I never died to cervantes because I focused on it. still somewhat agree with him being low tier for reskinning a basic enemy, but he is nearer to the top of the reskins for me because he actually puts up a fight and gives you a friggen katana if you cut his right arm. Also yeah, Eli is a main story boss so, not optional. The whole reason he sent you to kill his brother was explained in his speech if you talk to him: killing his brother would be outrageous, killing his brother's killer gets his brother out of the way and makes him a bigger hero. also, his second fight is midgame at most. Gonna have to disagree with you prefering the metal armor to Erza though. Erza was designed with the idea of being supported by his mech. It's a duel with a gank twist, while the first phase is just a PAX on steriods with absurdly high damage and tracking. Also, They must have buffed Archangel Eli in a patch, becauuse when I fought him with a maxed out cerberus and single rigged weapon, he was not stunned as much and was able to even stun me. But you used the URBN set from the looks of it, and they nerfed that not too long after release because it was insanely op. He is much harder now, and has a massive emphasis on directional block. All in all, a great video, but I feel that you missed out on some of the better parts of the game.

As others have said, parry, it is pretty necisary in this game. I would be willing to be that your bottom tier boss is only there because you didn't actually parry him. He takes only two parries and then he is stunned, and then you deal a nice amount of damage as a counter attack. In fact I am pretty sure the entire existence of that mini boss is to be a parry check, in order to get your ready for the actual boss of the area. While this game is like dark souls in a number of ways, it does have some key differences, and one of the biggest differences is how important parrying is. In this way it is kind of more like sekiro, dodging is still a thing, and needed for some boss fights, but the majority of fights rely more on parrying attacks, and then doing that nice big punishing blow. Although I would also argue that sekiro is even more about parrying than the surge 2 is, so I would personally say the surge falls a bit more inbetween dark souls and sekiro, but maybe that is just me. I would almost like to see this list redone after you have gone off and gotten far more used to the parry system, and used it on many of these bosses, simply because it is such a key mechanic and can massively change how these fights go even if you only just get the hang of using it a little (you don't need to master the system to begin seeing a pretty big difference).
