It's been 30 years since Ranma 1/2 left television. How does it hold up today?

The final story arc of the manga was never made into an anime. This is where Ranma faces Prince Saffron. He is a demigod, a foe more powerful than Prince Herb, he legitimately tries to kill Ranma and Akane, and comes damn close to succeeding.

I would recommend this to someone who wants a comfy battle manga without "power levels". The fights in Ranma are decided by skill and tactics, not ludicrous superpowers or transformations. The fate of the world is not at stake; some teens are just clashing over pride and jealousy.

I like how in a book i have it points out how many interesting checkpoints of Japanese culture you get in the series. Women writing manga or anime because they don't normally get enough chances in regular jobs, the springs are in china because china is such a mysterious place, the oldest sister quickly disappears from the plot because she's so nice and normal which doesn't fit a screwball comedy, and of course, Ranma learns a lot about just how much harder girls have it than boys.

Yeah but the manga has no real resolution for anything either, just additional stories that don't serve to resolve the overarching main plots, namely Ranma and Akane admitting their feelings and being together of their own accord, or Ranma and the others curing their curses. 😕

@@Dave102693 I understand that, but even 90s sitcoms showed the passage of time and got endings by the finale of the show. Take Family Matters, by the end, Steve Urkel FINALLY gets the girl. After pinning for Laura Winslow for yrs as the nerdy neighbor next door, she finally falls in love with him and they are engaged in the last few episodes. Steve freaking Urkel got the girl at the end lol When it's over it's over, no reason not to wrap things up at the very end. I'd be hard pressed to call it a "rom com" too bc there really isn't any romance in it. Just bc there are some arranged marriages and some characters are in love with others, doesn't mean romance. They are plot devices (as in Mousse being in love with Shampoo or Ryouga with Akane drives the plot of certain episodes, but isn't actual romance we see but an excuse to, say, have Mousse kidnap Akane and fight Ranma for Shampoo so we can see a fight between those two). It just gets old fast and there is SO much that can be done with the myriad of characters from the story and the lore set up with all the different martial arts style, the cursed, and other magical items we see throughout the series

Just finished the anime a couple weeks ago, I enjoy it, granted of course things stagnate and Ranma's treatment in the later seasons gets so much worse along with Akane's inability to ever understand Ranma over assuming things, which is her biggest flaw. That said in spite of those issues I was able to watch every episode minus 1, and when things got going they went well, never felt bored or anything throughout that time at least, the stories were exciting.

I have such a love/hate relationship with Ranma 1/2. It's such an interesting and clever show, hilarious and creative, exciting with bits of romance and with great characters, but at the same time it's SO disappointing that NOTHING EVER CHANGES. You can't even really say the show is character driven bc there is ZERO character growth or development. 🤦 And as you said, zero resolution of any kind. Hell, the show literally both counts the passage of time while simultaneously not counting the passage of time, i.e. there is an episode where Akane bakes a cake or something to celebrate Ranma's one yr anniversary of coming to live with them, so it's been a yr since the show started, and we see different seasons take place too over the course of 7 seasons, 2 movies, and the OAV series (heck we see Xmas twice in the show, marking the passage of 2 yrs at least) and yet they NEVER AGE! Ranma and Akane are 16 yr old freshman from beginning to end even though more than a yr clearly passes within the show 🤦 The only changes are additions of characters, but once they are added they don't add anything to the story after their initial introduction. Likewise, Ranma and Akane initially are shown to be learning more about each other and growing closer little by little, especially in season 1, but then around the start of the 3rd season they don't seem to grow any closer or become any more romantically involved etc. It's just so annoying. Nothing big changes, Ranma never officially breaks of any of his engagements and decide to honor one, never gets cured, he and Akane never kiss or admit their feelings (I guess he sort of does at the end of the manga when he thinks Akane is dead, but then he of course denies it 🙄) nevermind get married. Small things don't change either, Akane never learns to cook or swim or sew, she never really gets better at martial arts, never discovers that Ryouga is P-chan, Kuno never figures out the pigtailed girl is Ranma even when the rest of the school eventually knows, etc. It's still a fun show, but had so much potential to be all of these good things PLUS actual plots that lead to character growth and resolutions, which would have made it so much better. If you at least know this going into it, it's not as bad, but I didn't back in the late 90s when I started watching it and I couldn't wait to see what happened next as I waited for the next VHS tape to be released for sale lol only to realize a few seasons in that the author had no intention of actually doing anything with all the issues she'd set up, and that there'd be no resolution to any of the overarching plots like the multiple engagements or the curses. 🤦 But despite all that, it is still one of my favorite shows and has a special place in my heart. 🩷

I definitely felt this way during the series finale. ( for the anime) When Ranma's mother came around I got so excited only for the reveal to be ripped away. I was so pissed! I thought for sure she would get to see her son be a true man, despite his disposition for turning into woman. "but I didn't back in the late 90s when I started watching it and I couldn't wait to see what happened next as I waited for the next VHS tape to be released for sale lol " Wow… And OG fan from back in the day! That's how I watched it!… Well… I watched as I bought the Blu-rays. When I bought one Blu-ray season and finished it I couldn't wait to get another one and find out what happens. Hopefully, with Yasha Hime in the remake of Urusei Yatsura being made hopefully we can get a sequel or remake of Ranma 1/2! Fingers crossed!

@@greenlineessays Man I hope so! I'd love a remake with updated animation and a deeper, more serious (but still funny of course) story with resolutions to the biggest issues at least (i.e. fiancee drama and curse). 🤞 I was also pissed about the Ranma's mom coming not only being the finale but also having no resolution, especially since that actually was one of the few things that did get resolved in the manga I believe. 🤦

It uses the old school sitcom format where characters are not to change, for fear of new or infrequent viewers getting lost. Streaming didn't exist yet for binging and episodic shows with very little plot progressions between episodes was common in television.

I can't be offended by nothing changing because my brain is used to sitcoms like the Simpsons or Family Guy where things are stuck in neutral. Or even Seinfeld. It's just a sitcom, but I would argue Ranma and Akane become so used to yelling at each other, they have to probably stay together.
@PinkSakuraBunnie
@PinkSakuraBunnie 9 ай бұрын
@@MomsAgainstCatboys yeah but even sitcoms change more than Ranma 1/2. The kids age and change grades (if anything bc they have to since the actors clearly age), ppl get together and break up, jobs sometimes change or new children are born, weddings sometimes happen, etc. I love sitcoms, I grew up on them in the 80s and 90s, but even Steve Urkel finally gets together with Laura Wilson on Family Matters in the last season. By the very end things could have been wrapped up in both the anime and the manga, but they weren't (the manga almost did it, but everything went to hell in a handbag at the last second 🤦).

Is he coming to terms with who he truly is, or is this part of the curse when spending long bits of time in his female form for the first time? There is that cop who lives 100% in his young boy form and he does not take on that of a child , so i am guessing it is ramma true self coming out.

I really got into Ranma 1/2 at first. The turning into a girl and back all the time was interesting and funny. The ways Ranma adapted to the change was pretty good for the time. Also, gotta respect a show for having some uncensored ass and titties in a non-sexual way. Down side is that I fucking hate tsunderes. I fucking hate stories without progress. Same things I hated about Pokémon. One of the things I really fucking hated about Ranma 1/2 was that their fathers, the two who arranged the marriage in the first place, were the two who most got in their way. How many times did Ranma and Akane come close to making progress to admitting their feeling or even a kiss or cuddle only for their fathers to interrupt. Can't do that with tsundere or they'll never move forward. They've got to admit their feelings to each other before they can to anyone else. For that they need time alone together. The eldest daughter not only should've, but could've gotten together with the doctor and moved into his place. That wouldn't even have effected status quo all that much. At least the side characters should get some resolution. The way the anime ended with no fucking progress towards any fucking sort of resolution pissed me off to no end. One of the things I preferred about Inuyasha. At least Inuyasha had visual progress and a full conclusion at the end. Sure Inuyasha's ending was fucked up because of the age gaps between some of the characters that got together, but it was a conclusion.

The show is a lot of fun but as mentioned it is very episodic, and doesn't go any where. Which is kind of nice, since back when I was watching it is was hard to watch a full anime any time you wanted. So I often watched a lot of it out of order and it was fine. That isn't really a benefit these days though and it does leave you a bit disappointed that it never gets a real ending. I wouldn't really watch the entire series all the way through but I would highly recommend watching the first season, then googling like, 'top ten episodes' or skimming through and watching ones that catch your fancy.

Frankly, I don't know how Takahashi ever managed to avoid any flak from parents for all the nudity in Ranma. I get it, it's played for laughs and Japan in general isn't as prudish as their western counterparts when it comes to sexuality. I can only imagine the awkwardness when parents see their kids watching the show and nude girl Ranma suddenly comes up on the screen. Had Takahashi worked in the west something like this would have ended her career in a flash and landed her in hot water When you say "repetition gets old real fast" I can understand that from a western point of view when a plot device or gag is used over and over, but a Japanese audience don't have that problem, if anything it's what they prefer. Call it a cultural difference. In this case, the overall framework of the show is built upon Ranma and Akane having feelings for each other, yet can't come out and say it straight due to pride and shyness. This is a very common trope in Japanese media (and by extension their culture) where people can't admit to their feelings and appear wishy washy compared to the west where people tell it as it is straight up. But at the end of the day this is Japan's thing, and they get off on it because it works for them Shampoo didn't just try to get Ranma away from Akane, she actively tried to kill Akane on several occasions, at least in the manga that is, obviously Studio Deen couldn't afford to have this family drama series devolve into unrestrained violence on screen so they dumbed it down 12:56 Just because the English voice actor can't pronounce Okonomiyaki correctly doesn't mean you have to follow suit, google translate gives a perfect pronunciation if you look it up

0:28 - The interesting thing about your comment about cheating is that Chinese and Japanese martial arts actually clash in terms of philosophical standing. Japan prides itself on honor and their martial arts, specifically Karate respects that mentality. As a result, they avoid feints and keep their hands at a low guard because they usually attack the body and not the head. Chinese martial arts on the other hand reflects an individual's lifestyle and livelihood and avoids principles of fair or unfair. As a result, they will not hesitate to punch the head, push, eye gauge, scratching, kick the nuts. Basically anything for the sake of personal preservation. There's also something interesting about the nonsensical methods in which most of the martial arts are invented in the manga/anime as well. It somewhat reflects how random and nonsensical the creation of Kungfu styles are created. Wing Chun was created by a lady trying to escape marriage. There's stories of Drunken Boxing (allegedly) being invented by a monk at the Shaolin Temple who's family died. If they left him alone, he'd kill himself, so they let him drink. If he stayed at the temple, he'd either have to practice Kungfu or leave the temple, so he just practiced while drunk. P.S. I'm a Kungfu Instructor. Most of the information I get is from the Chinese master who runs our Kungfu Studio/Dojo. It's amazing at how much Chinese martial arts history is inaccessible to a person living in the US. There's also the phony Kungfu mystic witch-doctors you have to sort through as well. Japan is a lot more open about it though.

Ryoga appearing is not the running gag. Ryoga IS the running gag. And even then, watching it first time, I think Nabiki was the most stupid. A 'I fight anything, anywhere, whenever' falls into her hands and the first thing she does is NOT getting that hunk and putting him into her very own MMA, well, AMA (All MArtial Arts) circuit where he can fight to his hearts content and she gets as much moolah as she can out of the spectators, fans and challengers.

a series where the story isn't going any where and is roughly the same with minor changes.... is this usually what "slice of life" usually means?
@greenlineessays
@greenlineessays 9 ай бұрын
It honestly depends. There have been plenty of series that I've seen that are slice of life that have a beginning, middle and end. Most of the time though it's revolving around the characters instead of the story. Ranma's conclusion could have been something to the effect of finding cures for the curses that they have. But then again that's more story related. As I mentioned in the video Akane at some point she found out about Ryoga's secret life as Pi chan but never does. Ranma and Akane could have been fully in love by the end of the series, but instead it just goes back to the regularly scheduled slapstick. In most slice of life shows the story doesn't change, you're right; but the characters do. But nothing ever changes for the characters in this show, when The series ends the main characters are practically the same as when the series 1st began.

@@greenlineessaysCures for the curses? Awww. C’mon! Don’t do that! The fun of the series is the curses! 😂 I don’t want there to be a cure! Not even at the end of the story. That’d ruin the story.😂 As to the end of Ranma, it’s been a really long time, but I think one of the movies gave a nice ending. It was enough to make me happy with the series. Still, I loved these characters so much I didn’t mind their being no neat ending with a nice bow on top. It was an episodic story and that was enough for me.

Ranma and Sailor Moon introduced me to anime when it first came out. It was cool at the time. But by 2010 it was no longer 'edgy'. I have seen anime shows contain 'content' that simply was not an option in the 90s. But it is liked for a number of things and by some people that were never its original audience target. Times change.

Ranma 1/2 is by no means a masterpiece. However, if there's anything Rumiko Takahashi was known for (before phoning it in), it was character development. Compelling characters kept this series as a top 10 for me, even putting aside the fact this was the 1st anime I've watched EVER.

The early episodes of the Anime are amazing. A real combination of slice of life and some dragon ball - esque action. But later the Anime just stops and the manga becomes absurd. I would say, after Shampoo gets her arc it basically goes downhill. The next characters getting introduced are stupid. Most established characters get basically no time anymore, and it becomes a gimmick of the week thing. The mangaka must ran out of steam, it's obvious she didn't have a full developed story at all and made it up as she went from a quacky premise. Akira Toriyama did the same, but for him it worked out. If Rumiko Takashi had the same ability, Ranma would have been the Dragonball for girls, easily. Instead its a bit obscure. She refined her delivery with Inuyasha which is arguably a world hit.

What!? That's such a shame! I definitely prefer Ranma over Inuyasha any day of the week. Inuyasha isn't bad by any means, however, I found the repetitive nature of Ranma more tolerable than Inuyasha. Based off what you're saying it sounds like the anime ended at a good time. Still though, I'd like a complete adaptation of the series.

@@greenlineessays His issue with how real people age up and anime characters don't doesn't really work because if pictures or video exists of real people as children, those pictures or video don't age up with them. Yes, if somebody says, for example, that they have a crush on Emma Watson (I picked her as an example because of having been in high profile films as a child so most people will have seen her as a celebrity as both a child and as an adult), I will not think anything of it. But if they say that they have a crush on Emma Watson in The Philosopher's Stone, I will think it creepy and wrong because she's 11 years old in that. You can't say that because Emma Watson is now in her 30s that it's OK to find her sexually attractive in the films she made when she was a child, because when you watch those movies... she's still a child and always will be a child.

@@greenlineessays This was slightly frustrating to listen to. So much time was spent arguing about wether illustrated characters looked over or under 18. In my opinion, the emphasis shouldn’t be put on physical appearance but on the inherent inability to consent that minors have. I don’t think a guy is creepy if he sees a physically mature 16 year old and thinks she looks hot if he doesn’t know her age, I think it’s creepy if he continues ONCE he knows her age. It’s about the psychological differences between adults and children, not the physical ones, at least when we’re talking about older looking teenagers. Attraction to young looking children, school settings, other blatant indicators of youth yeah that’s downright disgusting. But here I am talking about arguing with someone you could clearly never “win” an argument with. Props to you both for keeping such a cool head through all that. Like talking to a brick wall. A creepy brick wall.

Okay, my thoughts on this retrospective. There are a lot of things I agree with but this didn't cover all that was lacking in the series and if it did I imagine this would be way longer than 20 mins. My first thought was already negative from the beginning with the mention of Rumiko being the GOAT. At what? Ususei Yatsura(Not much substance don't even care to spell it right), Rinne(Boring didn't even get a dub when last I saw it and it had been out for years), Inuyasha(Rinse and repeat, Sango and Miroku were the best couples there), Yashime(Do I really need to say why?) is at best all C tier in their structure and writing narrative. You under-explained Ranma but covered the most key points. Ranma is a liar, manipulative, raised by a scoundrel, and has oftentimes taken advantage of people's feelings or goodwill. His fighting style has no honor so even if he doesn't lose much can you really count them? You could but it's contrary to the Warrior's code Ranma supposedly claims to uphold with Ryoga. He went to get Shampoo's unrequited love back when he felt it was threatened. I still like Ranma because he's a fun and flawed character but what's the best part of him is the promise of something meaningful as it goes on but it ends up being wasted because Rumiko was kind of against the LGBQT+ community. You also did a bad job with Ryoga while you simped for Shampoo(Ranma sees her as a pest), a character that a lot regard as pretty but like a bad Chinese stereotype. Also, Ryoga isn't a bad guy for any of these things since the things that happen to him often are out of his control and that puts him in a tight spot so he doesn't advance much especially since he fell for a girl that's oblivious to the point it's painful to watch anyone fall for her. The reasons he loves Akane aren't very good, just like Ranma's. She also caused someone brain damage. This brings me back to the main problem with the series as a whole; Akane. Why? Well, Shonen Jump happens to do something where they use visuals to outline the overall situation in an anime with their ads or random art pieces for the magazine and the best example I know of is a recent one with MHA, Black Clover, and the other current anime were there and it showed Deku at the front. Asta all the way in the back! What ended up happening shortly or shortly before? Black Clover got canceled. Now go to official sites and Akane's very image seems to be missing. You'll mostly see Ranma(Of course), Ryoga(totally earned his spot), Mousse(Not so much to me but apparently he does well enough), and Genma(guessing because his panda form is cute and like a mascot). It's done this for the site and even tons of streaming services where Viz Media are actually involved. And now as if to add the final nail in the coffin for Akane. They changed her personality in the anniversary thing. It also focused mainly on Akane and it didn't do that well when released but I'm guessing Viz media was betting on that doing so well that the series would see an explosion. It didn't because they failed to resolve so many things and make Akane an appealing enough character. Leaving us with an open-ended series written by someone who underused all the things they could, held back possibly due to homophobia, or that alleged Shadow Writer of hers(Who I think was secretly a RyoRan shipper if you ask me). Overall, I'd give your review a C-.

As much as I enjoyed Ranma for the comedy, I also wouldn't call Takahashi a GOAT either. I found all her other works either boring or too slow paced and long (Rinne had potential but was so slow it was boring, and Inuyasha was also a cool idea, but it also moved so slowly and was sooooo long). I was always of the impression that the "Anything Goes Martial Arts" was basically the idea of turning anything into martial arts, which they do over and over in the show (anything goes rhythmic gymnastics, anything goes figure skating, anything goes cook offs, anything goes takeout race, etc etc) and the idea of using anything in that field to win (as opposed to suddenly pulling a gun out of your pocket bc you are losing as the video creator said). Ranma is definitely flawed, but it's not hard to understand why he did a lot of things, like trying to get Shampoo's love back in the cursed jewel ep, he's very insecure especially bc of his curse, and he's obviously prideful to a fault. 🙄 Honestly, I think the most shameful thing he did in the show (and possibly unforgivable) was never telling Akane about P-chan being Ryouga. He full on lets Ryoyga take advantage of her ignorance of his curse. He sees it as honoring his promise, but at what cost, you know? At the very least he could have told Ryouga that promise was void if he used his curse to take advantage of anyone, but he doesn't even do that. And don't get me wrong, I love Ryouga, he's one of my favorite characters, and I have a lot of sympathy for him and what he's gone through, but it was wrong that he'd do that to Akane and wrong of Ranma and EVERYONE ELSE (bc they all know) to let it continue. I wasn't sure what you were getting at in your part about Akane and Shonen Jump.

I don’t get the Rumiko Takahashi hate. Her stories lasting so long is a testament in itself. Her stories can be enjoyed even decades later. I watched many of her works long after they were done. InuYasha was probably the newest one I’d seen and even then I’d watched it nearly a decade later. I did see Maison Ikkoku, but it wasn’t my thing. I know I’ll always love her stories. Besides, perhaps she’s just made so much money from her past successes there’s no need to do anything different to her. I haven’t seen everything she’s done, but I enjoyed both Ranma and InuYasha. I even enjoyed the new Urusei Yatsura. The touch up made it easier to enjoy. The old one while good was a little too close to where I start crying too old. I know others around me enjoyed the old one. It just was too close to the 70s to me. Couldn’t do it. It might be nice to see something new from her, but I don’t blame her for taking the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” approach. I’d also hate to see something new and hate it because I’ve had that happen before with these stories that always must be moving forward and trying out a new different arc. Those shows aren’t my thing. I enjoy the status quo of genres too much and the different take doesn’t always land for me. imo, the status quo exists for a reason.

Quite sure I read the manga first (because it was at a library my grandpa took me to) and I loved it. I definitely think I didn’t want Akane and Ranma together while I was reading it and after years of coming back to it, I still don’t want it to happen. I like Inuyasha I loved that trope for him and Kagome, but with them eh. I always thought Akane was into girls more than anything and Ranma just didn’t want to be with anyone (or wanted someone to travel with *cough cough Ryugo). But I still love it for what it was. A funny little story with my awakening of loving both girls and boys ❤
