I’ve made the Hawaii to Alaska passage 8 times since 1958 as a ten year old on my Grandfather’s 72’ Hinckley to 2016 on a Gunboat 55 racing/cruising catamaran. From Loran and sextant to modern GPS w AIS and Radar, it’s a lovely passage. A good windvane system is a silent and efficient friend, especially on a ship of RAN’s size and sea kindly characteristics. A lovely video capturing the quiet joy of passage making.

Your sailing videos are so much different than most others. I actually feel the relaxation you are enjoying when the sails are up, the motor is off and there is nothing to do but relax and take it all in. Thanks for another beautiful 25 minute vacation from every day life.

Glad to see you on your next adventure after the more challenging times of a few months ago. The garbage patch in the Pacific Gyre are really misunderstood by the layman. It's not that there is garbage everywhere, it's that it's much denser there than other places. Also, much of the plastic pollution had been beaten to miniscule particles, and thus are suspended throughout the water column. Frankly, you probably wouldn't even see them without taking a sample.
@iainlyall64756 жыл бұрын
really? plastic beaten into a particles? :-)
@stephensteele35536 жыл бұрын
iain lyall yeah, two main things, the plastics harden and became brittle over time either due to chemical or physical interaction with the environment, and then the wave and current action of the ocean break it up. In fact, the large waste may not be the real problem with plastic wastes, it may actually be there micro particles creating toxicity in the environment.
@iainlyall64756 жыл бұрын
thanks stephen.
@LazyJacques6 жыл бұрын
Researcher Angelicque White sums up the public perception issue well: "The use of the phrase 'garbage patch' is misleading. ... It is not visible from space; there are no islands of trash; it is more akin to a diffuse soup of plastic floating in our oceans."
