The Jugulator album cover was a major screw up by the label. The correct full sized image could be seen under the CD. That image was supposed to be the album cover. It is amazing how many amazing albums we missed out when kids because the cover was not drawn by a crafted hand. Our seeking out method was "open the unsealed metal magazine, list all underground albums in there rated with a 1/10, find them". Same with album covers, my favorites are usually bashed. These are the original Virgin Killer and Deliverance's "Devil's Meat" , they are so brutally genius that everybody who sees them wonders if that is not moral but legal to do ! Cool fun show Pete and guys , I really enjoy it!

They guy on the No prayer for the dying cover is the band's manager If I am not mistaken. This record cover was my very first encounter with Iron Maiden. It was in 1993 and I was 5 years old. I saw it sitting in the local record and photo development store and was very taken with it. Based on the cover alone I decided that it had to be the most amazing CD in the whole store. And I wanted it. But I also undertood very well that there was no way in the red guy's basement bbq pit that anybody would buy that for a little kid. I tried to read the text on the front cover, but the elaborate typography and my non existent English skills did not make it easy. For years I thought their name was Ikon Maxiden. It would take many years before I found out what it actually was. When I turned 16 I got a gift card for a local record store chain and traded it in for Piece of Mind and Powerslave.

It was the Iron Maiden reissues (I forget the year), where they reworked the No Prayer album art so it's just Eddie reaching out... I liked both versions, the "grave digger" version is kinda goofy, but it was the "original" so, it has its place. The debut album got a similar workover as well, which admittedly looks way more bad ass than the original "punky" version - much darker and more menacing.

The first Van Hagar album. Stomp 442 by Anthrax too. *edited in* Agh!!! Dammit. LOL i was curious if anyone would pick Reinventing The Steel. Reinventing The Steel is definitely a tip of the hat to Judas Priests British Steel because both albums focus on HOOKS. The RTS album cover is a real moment (unlike Vulgar) captured at Dimebags house when *ALL FOUR* guys were hanging out finishing up the record. The guy jumping through the fire is Dustin, Philips tech guy. They were drinking by the fire & bet him $400 to jump through the fire in his boxers. Dimebag picked the album cover. As Dime said, its about drinking booze, jamming & hellraising. So basically the cover represents what the band did on their very influential platinum home videos. It certainly isnt an amazing cover but i never understood all the complaints(CFH cover anyone?). Quick rant.....As for the music..... RTS is far & away Pantera's greatest work. They took their time on that album and delivered a masterpiece. There has been a lot of revisionist history regarding RTS but it was a huge success. it gave Pantera their first and only original top 40 hit in America. Metal Edge readers voted RTS album of the year in 2000 & just recently here in early 2020 Revolver readers voted RTS as the *fourth greatest FINAL album of all time.* it was also voted #306 on Martin Popoffs top 500 albums of all time book. I highly recommend anyone that hasn't listened to RTS much to give it another spin. It is a modern, more mature vulgar with the hooks of the early 90s albums & the heaviness of the later albums all with a pinch of Sabbath thrown in. Back to the cover, its no classic but i see it as AVERAGE. Certainly nothing to be embarrassed about.

Gotta disagree with Formulas Fatal to the Flesh, that's actually one of my favourite covers of all time. It's really abstract, like some sort of demonic M.C Escher painting. Fits the title well too. Also love the music on that album and I think it's an underrated album.

I really like the Hipgnosis album covers, the idea is to provoke some thought while you're listening to the music. The Toe Fat album might actually be big toes, but agree its not a great cover. Hipgnosis are known for recycling ideas to clients. The concept for Wish You Were Here was Absence and the concept for Zep's Presence album was surprise surprise Presence. Apparently, the album cover concept for Pink Floyd's best of album Echoes was pitched to Dream Theater first and one of the band members has the original sketch. The Scorpions must have the most banned album covers, Virgin Killer for obvious reasons, In Trance - the girls exposed boob was darkened. Apparently Taken by Force was replaced by a group photo because of children playing with guns on the cover and then Lovedrive. Metallica's black album is too Spinal Tap.

I would have to say Savatage's SIRENS from 1983 ; not the original cover (with the blue ship, though that was pretty weak too), but the final one with the artwork from a book called "The Borribles Go For Broke". I found all kinds of amazing art by Boris Vallejo and similar fantasy artists that would have been far more fitting, but assuming there was a lot of copyright and licensing bs to contend with, that was out, but at least some inspiration could have been taken from those for something more cool/appropriate. Hell, the original "blue ship" version might have even been better.

Forgive the length of this, but I feel the need to address this... First, "Goats Head Soup" is an excellent album cover! It's unique, mysterious and interesting. It doesn't matter that the ethereal images don't have anything to do with "goats" or "soup" (that's why we've got the cool insert of "actual goats head soup!" -- who can forget that grotesquely cool surprise insert that we scared our parents with), it's a cool, unforgettable cover because of its ethereal strangeness. One of the reasons why the 70s was so great, is this very kind kind of interesting and mysterious ambiguity within, not only the music, but the aesthetic of music as well. I couldn't imagine "Goats Head Soup" or "Houses of The Holy" or "Mob Rules" or Bowie's "LOW" with any other cover art. I just couldn't. To me, they're all perfect. And while some obvious covers are great (like say, British Steel or Killers) others are def not (Fly on The Wall / Raise Your Fist and Yell) I personally liked the "Goats Head Soup" cover from day one (got it when I was about 9 years old in 1975) Yes, it was strange, but I liked that strangeness. Added to the mystique of the band. And aesthetically, I just dig it anyway. The different colored-tinted veiled heads of each member, with Mick on the cover looking like a ghostly woman from ages ago. Only the other Mick (Taylor) pulling off any kind of weird 'female' imagery, as the rest of the band was either too manish, quasi-ugly or simply unshaven to pull it off. Heh! But again, this needing of a "hit you over the head" kind of obvious approach to a cover...it only works if there's true "wit" or cool artwork involved (In Rock, Draw The Line). And I def do like them if they're witty, artistic, genuinely humorous or play against type ("Dressed To Kill" is fantastic!) In general, I just think album covers work best when they're engaging and interesting on "multiple levels" not just a one note, painfully obvious thing. **And here's a subject for another show ---> albums that have great "answer back" punchlines to the cover art....eg "If You Want Blood (You've Got It)" / "Through The Past Darkly" But back to the point (and finally), think of how excellent and legendary these two LP covers are: KISS - Love Gun AC/DC - Highway To Hell ∆ They could've both gone the lame, obvious route with an gun and a road (with some sort of elaborate nonsense surrounding the images) ---and that would've roundly sucked! But instead you've got two brilliant, iconic covers that look cool as hell, and say all they need to, in a slightly more subtle but very effective way. ∆ U.S./International version, not the Aussie

Point of Entry by Priest. As time goes by I like that album more and more to the point where I'd genuinely describe it as great, but good lord, that cover... (Dis)honorable mentions, in my opinion: Saga- Wildest Dreams (boy band?) The Kinks- Low Budget (referring to the cover art, apparently) Whitesnake- s/t or 1987 (just so bland, does not betray how explosive that album is) Lillian Axe- s/t (it's a nothing album cover, would not pop out at all on a shelf. Maybe one reason the band didn't get big. A shame for a great debut) TNT- Tell No Tales (another case of "don't put the band on the cover") Yes- Talk (heavily underrated album, crap album cover with a terrible "updated" Yes logo)

The guy with the Hawkwind t-shirt it is certain (also the others) that doesn't know that the Cradle of Filth album "Midian" is based on Clive Barker's novel "Cabal" and on "Nightbreed" movie, where strange creatures such as those on the cover appear. The guy down and left is propably ignorant of celtic folklore and drawings (knots). The cover of "Tyr" is based on geometrical motives of pre-Cristian era. It's the very image of an epic cover with the dark clouds and then the misty mountains (on the back cover)!
