As a serious Purple fan, I was considerably p*ssed when Ritchie departed. Rainbow's debut was a good effort. I bought Rising solely on the strength of the brilliant cover, which was beautifully painted on a classy Goldwing motor bike. As soon as Tarot Woman kicked in I was happy that Ritchie moved on. All 6 songs are crafted high class. One of the greatest 2nd albums for sure. Camel's Mirage, Led Zeppelin 2, Black Stone Cherry; Folklore and Superstition, Black Country Communion 2, ELP; Tarkus, Genesis; Trespass, Black Sabbath; Paranoid. There's a lot of very good 2nd albums 🎶👍

@@limomangeno Dude, we are talking literally doing cover versions. Exact same music, exact same lyrics. Are you really not aware of this? Really? It's as if I put a band together and we did songs like Do You Feel Like We Do, Sweet Home Alabama, Detroit Rock City, Jet Airliner, and others and claiming we wrote those songs. That is what Zep did. They literally stole those songs, all previously recorded, and claimed they wrote them.

Graham Parker and The Rumours sophomore album is brilliant..as were as his albums in the 70s. Pearl Jam Versus is amazing...to me their best album. Dirty South by Drive By Truckers is southern rock classic. This Years model by Elvis Costello and The Attractions is another classic.

@grimtraveller79235 жыл бұрын
As I went through my album collection, I gave up when I got to around 62 sophomore albums and as I did that, it began to occur to me that actually, the norm seems to have been that the sophomore should actually be an improvement on the debut, even if the debut was a barnstormer. There are all kinds of theories about sophomores and I think life and history is more nuanced than theorists often give credit for. Also, in my life, when I was getting certain discographies together, I rarely heard a band's material in the sequence in which they were released, which may also affect the way I'd see a sophomore or, for that matter, a debut. For example, I was well into Mahavishnu Orchestra's "Birds of fire" for a good 6 years before I heard "Inner mounting flame" and as much as I think the debut is a stunner, the sophomore was so ingrained in my love that it would be difficult to be supplanted, even though there are a couple of songs on the debut that are superior to anything on "Birds." Of course, it doesn't always work that way but it does on so many occasions.

This album is way too similar to their debut. A man a city sounds like a cliche of 21st century schizoid man, and the title track sounds alot like Epitaph. That album was not a step forward for this band. Only Cat food - which is more like a musical joke - sounds really fresh. Lizard was much more interesting and innovative album than the second one.

Great stack of Sophmore albums! Some I never heard of, yet I wanna check out asap. That's what I dig about your show Pete. You educate me and get me into cool bands/albums. Zeppelin 2 and Van Halen 2 are in this conversation. Zep 2 in particular. Zep debut is incredible. Killer track listing, many classic songs on there but same goes for Zep 2. The difference is 2 is wayyy dirtier, gritier, heavier uninhibited more variety more more more. I mean the opener Whole Lotta Love alone is a perfect example and sets the tone for the rest of the record. Very influential album too.

Yes, Helluva Band" rules. Love the first, but this is the one. What are they? Many things, but also heavy metal. That is what we called it in the 70's. Plus "Cream," "Circus," "Rolling Stone," & Playboy." Heavy metal was all over the airwaves, magazines, & people's descriptions in the 70's." Shows my age, but the term heavy metal was widely used since 1973, & really since, "Hendrix's time." We did not call it "proto metal." But that is a whole new argument...

It's got to be Malice 'License To Kill' from 1987....fairly or otherwise, often referred to as the American Judas Priest. The title track, Sinister Double, Chain Gang Woman, Christine...amazing stuff; a polished but heavy production and one of the best screamers in the business in James Neal. They make a very amusing live-performance appearance in 80's comedy-bodyswap-flick 'Vice-Versa' with Judge Reinhold, on YT. "Party til you puke...love, Malice"

Some others for consideration (your mileage may vary): Alan Parsons Project: Follows up "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" with "I Robot" Moody Blues: If you consider "Days of Future Passed" as the debut of the Justin-Hayward Moody Blues (and I think that's fair), then "In Search of the Lost Chord" is an excellent sophomore album. If you consider Renaissance with Annie Haslam as a different group than Renaissance with Jane Relf (and I think that's fair, given all the personal changes!), then "Ashes Are Burning" is an impressive followup to "Prologue". No slump there! Maybe Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers? Pink Floyd? Elvis Costello? (not sure if you're a fan of ElvisC) Eagles? For me "Desperado" is much better than their debut. And for a more obscure group, perhaps Icehouse. I could be in a minority on this one. If you move into something more like Adult Contemporary, Mike + the Mechanics. I loved the debut, but "Living Years" is an excellent album. I'll also suggest The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, given that "It'll Shine when it Shines" is a great album. I'm not sure that their debut is strong enough to put them in this category.

I'm glad you mentioned Hotter Than Hell. Now I'm waiting to see if you mention Motley Crue Shout at the Devil. I think that was a very good second album.

I have never been a Metal fan but we cross over a bit in taste of course. Supertramp, Crime of the Century, not their first album but after that incredible album they followed up with my second favourite album is still Crisis? What Crisis? (I really don't like Breakfast in America). And I know Al Stewart would not be on your radar and he put out a lot of albums before Past, Present and Future (great) and them Modern Times (great follow up)

I still listen to Badlands almost daily. One of my favorite bands of all time!! Glad to see the love given on your show for one of the most underrated bands/releases of the late 80's and 90's. And yes, Voodoo Highway > Debut.

Great video Pete!! Let me hear your opinion about Camel. Same titled vs Mirage?? But hey!!, No Judas Priest here??? Cheers from Chile!!!
@seaoftranquilityprog6 жыл бұрын
Both Camel albums could have been included here Bruno...arguably though their best 2 could be their 3rd & 4th. I debated Judas Priest...ultimately decided against them cause their debut, while decent, isn't really a great album. Sad Wings of course is legendary!
@treeduck37056 жыл бұрын
I think Rocka Rolla is underrated you've got a couple of amazing epics in Run of the Mill and Dying to Meet You, The Winter suite, Never Satisfied, Cheater, the title track, I mean c'mon!
@seaoftranquilityprog6 жыл бұрын
Not saying it's bad by any means...just not a 'classic' debut in my opinion, especially when comparing to debuts from Sabbath, Zeppelin, Maiden, Hendrix, etc.

Well I'm a Budgie fan but I think it beats Budgie's debut, or it's at least it's equal.

Great lists for the debut & soph albums. It's a technicality, but Chicago's sophomore album was titled "Chicago", but everyone does indeed refer to it as "Chicago II". Same way as everyone calls it "The White Album" instead of "The Beatles".
