I just finished reading this book and really wanted to talk about it with someone but I don’t know anyone else who has read it. I was so happy to find your video. I think you really hit the nail on the head with your review!

I read and loved Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. It's one of the few books that has stayed with me for these many years since I read it. I can still remember details from that book. I started The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane (I think that's the title), it was a slow start, and it was a library book so I DNF it so I could return it, but it's one I definitely want to try again at some point. I will be reading Lady Tan for sure, thank you for this review, and for the "warning" on the squeamish parts, I may have to skip over some of them, but we'll see. Thank you for another awesome video.

I definitely think this book is worth the read. Also, if you haven’t read The Island of Sea Women, that’s spectacular as well (although there are some brutal parts of it toward the end).

I listened to this because my book club is discussing Lady Tan tonight and I didn't read it. I did read Snow Flower & the Secret Fan years ago. I'm super disappointed to learn that I'm going to hear another discussion on foot binding. I don't understand why the author has to write more than one book on that subject. Yuck. Lisa See is definitely a one and done author for me. Your video confirmed my decision to skip this read was a good one.
@BandysBooks
@BandysBooks 2 ай бұрын
I'm sorry that See doesn't work as an author for you. I think she discusses the subject more than once because she really grounds her stories in the time and place and foot binding was authentic. But it's always good to know if a particular subject isn't something you enjoy. Better luck with your next book club read.

I am not agree with anything you said. I am convinced that EVERY WOMAN should read the medical parts because they are very important especially for us women. Every page of this book is necessary to read, because THIS IS LIFE. You can not ignore the "bloody sides" of life because every woman has every month to do with this. And women has also to do with births, of course we all have mothers. Blood is the essence of beeing, especially woman beeing. With this book you can understand the match between women feelings and illnesses, how you can get balance in your life. Quote: "We have blood we can see when our skin gets cut. But Blood is a bigger essence. In women, Blood is the leader. It is what allows a woman to become pregnant and feed a fetus. It turns into mother´s milk upon her giving birth. You must aside the ides of function. We re not concerned with veins, muscles and bones, or organs with specific occupations." Also, I am not agree with the simile men doctor from the past in China and today in our world. Men doctor didn´t have any chance to contact a women patient directly. This was the reason. And not only because men don´t understand women ilnesses than other women. I head an other experiencess. We all are individuals. When you want be objective, please think about.

@@zehrazilifli421 thank you for sharing your thoughts. I’m honestly quite confused by your response. I said over and over how much I enjoyed this book and how highly I recommend it, so I’m not sure why you don’t agree with anything I said. I said several times how good the depiction of the things women go through was. I do provide content warnings for books that have graphic depictions of certain subjects because as you have said in your comment, we all have different experiences. You mentioned that I should be more objective in your comment, but those warnings are quite literally objective. I don’t personally feel bothered by the depiction, but it is a fact that some other people will be due to differing life experiences. As for your comment about male doctors, yes, male doctors at the time were restricted from direct interaction with female patients(which I did mention in the review), but they still had mothers, grandmothers, wives, aunts, sisters, etc. There were certainly more misconceptions around female health at the time because of the separation of genders and moments in history like this can help us understand why there are so many issues with women’s health care still in modern society. Again, touching on that comment about objectivity. I spoke about my own personal viewpoint based on my life experiences. Just because you haven’t had those experiences doesn’t mean they didn’t happen or don’t exist. The fact is that many women throughout all the many years of history across almost every culture have received lackluster health care due to misconceptions about women’s health, many of them spread by men.
