I loved this book. So much more than just a coming of age. Racism, grief, family dynamics, love can look different and still be strong. I loved a statement that it’s not enough to not be racist but to be actively anti-racist. This book just covered so many significant and thought provoking topics. My company offers 3 days of bereavement. You can apply for more time but you’re either using your leave or unpaid. Not good enough. Yes, relatability. Good word. I’m so glad to have read this book.

I’m glad that you enjoyed this book too. I agree that companies should do better for bereavement leave. It’s insane to expect someone to return a couple days after a tragedy.

I loved this book! I totally agree we can all relate to some part of Maddie's life. I was sad when I finished reading. I wanted to know more about her mom and all of her experiences in Ghana and more details into Mom's relationship with Dad. I want a sequel!

You’ve probably seen this but BOTM has a podcast with the author discussing this book. Read with Jenna has some kind of paid author event in the works too. Reading the author’s notes made me think she’s drawing on some personal experience.

I did see some of the discussions about this book. I’m so glad she’s getting so much attention as it really was a good read. I agree. It definitely could be auto-fiction.

I've finished this now and great review, I think I liked it even more than you. I loved the inclusion of female sexuality and pain, that is not an issue I often read about in books and I know it's a thing, feels like it's breaking down some taboos. I liked the ending, I felt like it was judging those characters you wanted to grow, and not by punishing them, but not rewarding them.

I’m so glad to hear that! It’s a really good book and I definitely was left with lots of thoughts to mull over after. Yes! I was so happy to see them discussing her dissatisfaction with her partner and sex. Media is unfortunately inundated with mostly unrealistic, fake enjoyment from women. It’s so important for women to see that it’s normal to have issues, to not always enjoy, and to be okay asking for what they want/need. I know what you’re saying and I do agree somewhat. There is definitely judgment, but I don’t really know how much will actually change. I grew up with a lot of friends who had similar cultural expectations and pressures placed on them and while they might have similar breaking point moments, I ultimately felt like those expectations don’t really change long term. Hope that makes sense. I hope the biggest change is the empowerment of the MC and her finding it a bit easier to advocate for herself.

Happy Friday! I imagine some of it might be influenced by personal experience. I don’t know if there’s a need to feel bad as ultimately, she reaches a place where she’s much happier.

I only watched up to the spoiler alert, but this does sound like a book that needs to be on my TBR. I heard an interview with the author on a podcast (I think it might have been the Book of the Month podcast) and that originally sparked my interest. So, off to put a hold on this now...

I didn't get too far into your video until the spoiler alert - but it sounds like you were excited and generally positive by this one... Which is great because I have the eBook out from the library and should get to it next week.

I definitely was excited for this book and think it’s a worthwhile read. It might not be quite as prose-y as some of your normal reading, but it is a good book with a lot of relevant themes.

Sounds like your dog is intentently listening to your review too. Ears keep perking up. I like the book discusses the reality of sex and not the glossy pleasure that books normally paint.

She is intensely waiting to see if I am going to give her a treat or toss a ball for her. 😂 I appreciated that too! I think it’s so important for there to be realistic portrayals out there.
