Penelope Douglas has a real knack for writing some of the most damaged, sympathetic young girls ripe for a character arc and then completely screws the pooch by pairing them with the most loathsome, repugnant men imaginable. She could’ve written a story around Tiernan about grief and found family but instead she decided incest and sexual violence was the move?? Hello???
@lianai.97956 сағат бұрын
Misery porn is a fetish in itself, and it rarely comes with good writing. Personally, I am just shocked to find out it's a common kink in mainstream readership. In my country Credence, Haunting Adaline and CoHo books are top sellers. I'm terrified, disgusted and disappointed that *this* is what appeals the most to the general public :|. No wonder the romance genre is releasing mostly garbage nowadays if this is the "golden" standard imposed by popularity and sales figures...

Between the Fredrick Douglass quote at the start and the Toni Morrison reference, I’m actually kinda baffled. Like is it meant to be a comparison between Tiernan’s situation and the plights of enslaved black people or is it just meant to make it seem more intelligent? Coz it feels like a strange aspect of American history to repeatedly vaguely reference in your barely legal incest erotica…

@ trueeee yeah I forgot about that oh my god. Plus there’s the weird way they talk about Flora, with the whole ‘my Mexico’ thing and the only character implied to be a person of colour (because I wouldn’t be surprised if Penelope doesn’t know there are white Latinos) being a poor maid who’s only really notable for being dead so she can motivate a white man. Between them and Colleen Hoover, I really hate how people of colour are portrayed in these dark romances. Especially coz they try to subtly present themselves as ‘progressive’
@AshChiCupcak22 сағат бұрын
This books fascination with wanting to hear the non verbal character talk is very reminiscent of Hoover's Maybe series where the love interest is deaf and the main character wants him to talk to her so bad and when he does, he has like the best voice ever. I need to tell Colleen and Penelope, thats not how that works. Thats not how any of this works 🤦♀️

It makes me so uncomfortable that ‘teenage piece of ass’ is a line in multiple Penelope Douglas books. Like I’m less than half their age and I hated writing that coz teenagers are children to me. Sure ageplay whatever but would it kill them to write erotica about people in their 20s? It would get rid of half the issues in them

I’m already seeing bad faith questioning of the semantics around family relations. Look, imo the “step-“ part doesn’t matter. The lack of shared DNA doesn’t matter. The lack of contact doesn’t matter. Jake calls her family. Noah calls her “cousin.” If these men thought of Tiernan as just a person living there they began to see as family in the romantic sense that would be one thing. But the men repeatedly call her family, call her by their name as they become entangled long before anything vaguely “””romantic””” is happening. If there’s a more in-depth argument I really don’t care because this is an account of three men grooming a teenager.
@asteridshydrangea-jt2hf20 сағат бұрын
Yeah, it’s not like ‘this is societally awkward but we don’t think of each other like that’ it is EXPLICITLY leaning into it. ETA: you could write a story where people casually use cuz socially and use family colloquially. This isn’t it
@jxey112 сағат бұрын
Right? Like, my mum has a best friend, she babysat me and I grew up with her sons. I call her my Aunty and them my cousins. We aren't blood related but I'd consider them family, and the idea of engaging in a romantic/sexual manner with them is profoundly disturbing to me.

Listen, if these books are targeted towards women, then most of the people who criticise & make fun of them are also women. Like, I am pretty sure the majority of your viewers are women. I support women’s rights & women’s wrongs, but that doesn’t mean I will not criticise the dumb shenanigans they pull from time to time in the form of “dark romance”. I say this with nothing, but love for women (literally. I am gay). No hate to anyone who enjoys these books. However, we all have a different way of consuming media. In my case, it’s by watching someone else on KZbin read these (dare I say, terrible) books so that I don’t have to. Thank you very much.

i usually enjoy the mocking voices when characters do dumb stuff, but the use of distinctly southern accents to mock the incestuous abusers really rubs me the wrong way. it's the same as when someone uses a southern accent to imply a character is stupid, uneducated, poor, or otherwise immoral. it's very ingrained in american culture, so i hope that it's not reflective of anything you actually believe.
