@dan cussin I must admit, for me, the Zeppelin live stuff just doesn't compare with their studio work. I always found the guitar tone really thin and often Robert Plant didn't hit the notes that he did on the records which I often find irritating, even now.
@grimtraveller7923
@grimtraveller7923 5 жыл бұрын
@dan cussin The Stones as a band have long driven me crazy. Even when I saw them in '82, it was the emotion of hearing the Stones rather than what they actually played, that was memorable, when I look back on it. Going right back to the 60s, they always played their songs so fast and Mick Jagger never hit the notes that he would on the records so in a way, you weren't really getting a semblance of the songs you loved. Their live albums and live films are a frustration unless one doesn't care what they sound like. I don't want the melodies changing because Mick is too lazy to hit the notes he's meant to ! Ha ha ha ! I have to laugh.

@dan cussin You were indeed lucky....I had to take the bus to the Stones gig I went to. Actually, the buses were so full, I had to walk home from Wembley Stadium and it was about 3 miles. Although it was June, in London, that day was chilly and wet. But everyone was pretty happy ! I actually used to love live gigs and I went to loads back in the day. Many of them were jazz gigs and there, the nature of the music meant stretching out. I loved that. I notice though, that most of the time, it was artists whose records I didn't have or didn't know well enough to be fussy about whether they played like the record. When I saw AC/DC in '82, they were fantastic. There was only one song I didn't know at the time {The Jack} and I soon picked that up. They played the songs like the records but they really stretched out, especially the guitar solos and it was truly an experience. The following year, I saw Rush and I was so disappointed. It felt like a lacklustre night but I think it was also because I didn't know all of the songs. But confusingly, I've seen many great gigs where I didn't know the songs ! Which brings me back to your opening point, I think that when it comes to live albums, if I'm not particular knowledgeable of the songs, then I'll likely love the album. For example, when I got "On your feet or on your knees" by Blue Öyster Cult, I loved that album. 39 years on, I still do. But I find the studio versions of the songs quite weedy in comparison, even though they're heavy. And with another of my favourite albums, "Status Quo Live", it's always been a sensational album for me because most of the songs were new to me. But there were 3 on the album that I knew well already and the live versions are inferior. A lot of it is to do with which version I heard first.

I was at the 'Live Mutha' concert at the Long Beach Arena. 'Raunch and Roll' is one of the greatest live albums I ever heard. The energy is insane. Edit: Jim 'Dandy' Mangrum is a cousin of mine and I got backstage passes from JD for several times. Meanwhile, David Lee Roth, back before Van Halen cut their first album tried to talk me out of a pass but I had already invited some female friends. We knew each other from playing local high school garage band concerts

saw the EAGLES open for the ALLMAN BROS. when they were capable of headlining. they had hits already. the ALLMANS thought it'd be a good idea to bring out a native American to talk about the plight of the red man. I'm embarrassed to say people were throwing popcorn and stuff at him.when the boys came out, DICKEY BETTS was fuming, tho he didn't complain, he just dogged it on guitar. seriously .sometimes you can just feel that a performer is angry at the fans.the jagoffs up front couldn't simply wait thru the speech. they might learn something.

Hey Pete. I really enjoy your channel. Regarding your Pink Floyd pick, Momentary Lapse of Reason is actually a studio album. The subsequent live album from that tour is "The Delicate Sound Of Thunder" recorded at Nassau Coliseum. I agree with you about Pink Floyd Live in Pompeii, which is killer. The live wall album "Is There Anybody Out There?" is pretty great too. I've dreamed about an official non-bootleg live Animals tour album. Take care

I think the Frank Zappa/Mothers album "Piquantique" is worth it's weight in gold. It came out around 1991 but it's from a 1973 gig in Sweden. It was only the 2nd CD I ever bought as I was very much a "vinyl and put it on tape" head at the time and I could only find it on CD. It was the fact that Jean Luc Ponty was on violin on it that I bought it. It may be complex jazz fusion but it's not so complex that it doesn't groove and it's not so complex that it isn't easily followable. On the last track, when the band has got to the end, he makes them go back a minute or so, saying they didn't play it right and they play that segment again. Priceless. I can't hear the difference ! I don't generally find Frank funny. And some of his music leaves me cold. But on this album, there are bits when he's complaining about the cold where he really is funny and the music comes together in the most wondrous way.

It's funny, when I first started acquiring albums in the 70s, I didn't really think of live albums as distinct from studio ones. One just acquired an album as one came to it. If your friend had one that you didn't have, you borrowed it and taped it. If you could scrape the money together, you bought one or two. When I started working it became easier. It's only years later that you'd think "wow, I've got a lot of live albums." Also, nowadays live albums don't have the gravitas they once did. It was so rare to hear a band play live if they didn't come to your neck of the woods and if they did it was sometimes pricey. Or many bands had broken up or were past their best or past the particular line up you might be enamoured with. So the live album kind of broached the best of all worlds.

Thanks for showing some love for The Song Remains The Same, though I would tell your viewers to pick up an old cd copy of the original, non-remastered version, as the content is different. All of the reissues are taken directly from the film, including all the glaring cuts and edits, whereas the original has complete songs with much less editing. Get the reissue for the extra tracks if you must. As a 40-year professional guitarist, I've always scratched my head over why it's been slagged for so many years. Because the songs don't sound like the studio versions? Because it came out in the year of Punk, when long jams were out of fashion? All I know is, once you get past the meh version of Rock and Roll (had to include the opener!), it kicks major ass and features some of Page's finest moments. There is no better live version of the title track and Rain Song, and absolutely among the very best versions of Dazed and No Quarter. But, pound for pound, How The West Was Won is still the single best representation of Led Zeppelin live if one doesn't start in on the many bootlegged shows.

I'll keep plugging this one. If you like NWOBHM or hard rock, try and check out Tygers of Pan Tang's "Live at Nottingham Rock City", which saw release in 2001. It was recorded in 1981 during their Spellbound tour and captures the band on good form, although 4/5's of them were sick with flu. John Sykes absolutely shreds on several tracks, for anyone who is interested in his playing before his Thin Lizzy and Whitesnake stints. I've got the album available on mp3 files (entire album and separate tracks), if anyone wants to listen without having to pay for the cd (which may be hard to find; out of print for 18 years). Let me know as I'm happy to share it and we'll figure a way to send it (dummy email or social network, etc). (y)

Rush Different Stages is great also. The 3rd disc is from their early years. It might be my favorite live album from Rush except I usually think ESL beats it out. ESL has a great rendition of Jacob's Ladder and best La Villa Strangiato (I agree with you here). But it also has a great trio of songs that fit together perfectly Broon's Bane, The Trees, and Xanadu. These are the best versions of these songs. Heck it is the best version of Passage to Bangkok and Beneath, ... . also. All great songs but it is Rush baby!

So much fun taking a trip though all of these live recordings. Every time I thought of something that was missing, it came up eventually. Can't believe how many of them I own, although we diverge slightly with the southern rock. Not real familiar with that stuff.

You can't go wrong with the Outlaws' "Bring it back alive." Yes, it's nominally southern rock, but in actuality, it is heavy rock, yet with a beautiful melodic bent to it. Three lead guitarists tend to bring that out in a band !

For me,a great live album is when I put on my head phones,close myself and wish I could go back in time and actually be there when it took place,or at least have video of the performance. Live albums that make me feel that way; Rainbow-Live In Europe Jethro Tull-A Little Light Music Frank Zappa-You Can't..Volumes 1 and 2 Medicine Ball Caravan;only for the Alice Copper band doing Black Ju Ju

I came across a loose cassette of 'Kiss-Alive!' in a car boot sale when I was 12 (over 30 years ago lol) for 50p - around 50c. No inlay card or case. My first introduction to a live album from any band. Amazing stuff. It took me a few years to find out the names of the songs when I could eventually get it on LP.

My Mum got me Kiss alive for my 18th birthday ! I was living in Nigeria at the time and the record shops {most in my town were more accurately described as shacks with electricity} would, for the price of a C90 tape record two albums or a double album onto a tape. It was a great and cheap way to build an enormous album collection. Anyway, I thought Alive was better than Alive 2 and it still holds up today although there was a lot of fluff and chat on it. Fortunately, with programmes like Audacity, one can edit out all the stuff one doesn't want to hear. There was stuff done in the studio after so it's quite appropriate !

When starting look at the first part I wondered if I really was ready with 47 minutes (which is quite a long time for a video like this). After the first I looked at the second and seeing both, almost, right after each other was no trouble at all. Time did fly very fast and that is a good grade!

In jazz and jazz fusion there have been so many live albums ~ arguably the genres should be at their best in a live setting but I've found that this isn't often the case. I used to go to jazz gigs all the time and I've reached the conclusion that while the actual gigs themselves might be an experience one may never forget, that hasn't always translated to the actual recording of the gig. Nevertheless, there are a few good to truly great jazz /fusion live albums that are worth mentioning. "The Sun & Moon Have Come Together" by the Fourth Way [from a 1968 gig] is a pretty good one. The Fourth Way could arguably claim to be the first band that could be described as jazz-rock although the music was an evolution as opposed to an invention. But with Michael White on violin and Mike Nock on electric piano, sonically they were pushing jazz into rock areas, admirably backed by Ron McClure who put a pick up on his double bass and tried to make it sound like a bass guitar with his amp, and Eddie Marshall who was a pretty straight ahead drummer when he needed to be. They also delved into some esoteric African thumb piano/percussion sounds on the album and were generally groundbreaking but seem to have been written out of much of jazz history. Bill Bruford's "The Bruford Tapes" from 1979 is a sizzling affair from beginning to end. It may mean nothing to anyone that was familiar with his first couple of albums but if you didn't have a clue, like me when I first came across it in 1990, then it's something of a revelation. Great playing, complex, yet simple, rocking yet convoluted, the band sound like they're having an absolute whale of a time. Both progressive and jazz rockers should love this one. I don't know if the same can be said for 1979's "Wipe out" by Amalgam. This is one of the most intense collections of music that has ever been committed to vinyl and much as I love it, it really seems to me to be an acquired taste. I really took a chance buying this back in '90; I'd bought "Deep" by the band but it made my nerves crawl, for the most part. But the next day, I saw this one there ~ an 8 sided live album ! It actually came in a box. When I see the bonus stuff that comes with older live albums on CD nowadays, I think to myself, "Amalgam had that in mind 40 years ago !" Except that it wasn't bonus material, it was the material. They take you through every kind of emotion and state possible in these dazzling forays through jazz, rock, avant garde, free jazz and the odd bit of ambient. But the amazing thing is that it is really accessible and the playing is incredible across all 8 sides {nowadays available on 3 CDs}. Who would have thought that a gig in a pub in Stockwell, south London, at the end of Feb '78 would be the setting for such a slice of dynamism ? But Away manage it with one of the classiest jazz rock live albums of any time, "Integration." The guy that was the leader of the aforementioned Amalgam {Trevor Watts} had been a longtime musical collaborator with the leader of Away, drummer John Stevens. In fact he'd been in the first incarnation of Away, whose first LP was also live. But they had very different musical approaches and this live album finds a band that seems much more accessible and approachable.....until you listen really deeply to what they were doing. The album jumps all over the place and pretty much sets the place alight and it comes over very much. Their line up of 2 guitars, bass, sax and drums somehow manage to stay interesting and vital all the way through and what really cracks me up is that at the end of all this intensity, Stevens just says, in a droll and laconic voice "thank you very much." It's so funny. Great album though.

An often overlooked Lynyrd Skynyrd live album...is the Southern By The Grace Of God - Lynyrd Skynyrd Tribute Tour 1987...album. No it's not as good as "One More From The Road"... but it's an enjoyable time capsule of, what was essentially, the rebirth of Skynyrd. A decent recording, that features stuff from Nashville, Atlanta, and Dallas. Also features an interesting mix of guest musicians.
