But I get people getting all pissed off about this subject, some people love metal so much they don't want to see it worn like a fucking fashion statement. And I can understand their point of view. Now people should always do what they want but they should be mindfull of the results of said actions.

Basically, enjoying and experiencing art > pretending to enjoy and experiencing art. I don't understand why you would wear a shirt for a band you haven't heard, or quote a book you haven't read, or discuss a movie you haven't seen. That's my opinion. I don't get irrationally upset or anything, but it is slightly annoying; mainly because when I see a shirt for something I like, I immediately want to talk to that person, but many times they're not actually fans.

They're comfortable, warm, and they look great. It's the same thing, they like the design, so who cares whether they like, don't like, or even listen to the band. It doesn't hurt me in any way.

To be fair, it's pretty damn retarded to wear a symbol (any symbol in any form) without even knowing what it stands for. It's one thing for metal to appropriate satanist symbols while understanding where they come from (or mainstream culture appropriating classical metal bands with the basic idea of "this music was the shit back in the day and the shirts look nice"), and another to wear a shirt with the anarchist logo without even knowing what anarchism is just because it looks kind of cool. Basically: expect to be looked at funny while wearing a "Free Palestine" shirt on the streets of Tel Aviv, the passers-by won't know you're just illiterate and not expressing a political opinion; now if some time in the future these shirts come into fashion for some obscure reason (like the Che Guevara ones did), people will become less presumptive. P.S. I've hated wearing clothes with random writing on them since before I could actually read. I still find low-scoring high school students wearing Cambridge hoodies bizarre.

I totally agree with what you are saying... its almost like when people get Asian lettering without researching beforehand what the phrase or word is supposed to look like because they were drunk and thoughtless one night... people just act on impulse or go with something because it is supposedly cool to someone... as a thirty year old I really don't give a shit what some dumbass kid does or wears because I know they are just being dumbass kids, like I was as well... but that being said, its important to let them know what they are supporting by pointing shit out when you see it... as the now old heads, its the 90s kids turn to help the new gen have more informed and thoughtful decisions... and none of that includes bashing them... you could simply be like, oh you like anarchy? well, what about it do you like and how do you think it could improve or affect the world?... by engaging in questions and not bossing them around or putting them down, you are helping them gain knowledge without scaring them away and fronting them out.... we can talk about all that shit without it ending with an elitist dick waving contest....

I'm a high school student, and I cannot describe how many people I see wearing Nirvana, Megadeth, Misfits, and Metallica (just to name a few) shirts who just give me a blank look when I ask what songs by them they like. However, all they are doing is displaying their ignorance, and that's their fault and I have no issue with it. I do find it funny though that some of the same people who listen to music about disemboweling virgins and skullfucking and whatnot are the same ones who complain about being offended.

Took the words right of my mouth. Here are my thoughts on the whole situation. I never bought a bandshirt if I didn't like the band. Just because I don't want to deal with that bullshit conversation you spoke of. A: "Hey, nice shirt. Whats your favorite album?" B: "Ehh I just bought because the cool design." A: "Ohhh my god, here we go!" For example there was that one shirt with a zombiefied Pikachu and this bands logo above it. I knew the band and didn't like it. I like zombies and I fucking love pokemon, I just don't like the band. Needless to say I was tempted to buy it but decided against it. That is because of my personal rule: "Don't like the band, don't wear the shirt (although the design is awesome)." The only problem with non metalheads wearing bandshirts I have and with problem I mean minor inconvenience, is that bandshirts are often a conversationstarter among metalheads. I might ask someone with a Testament shirt about their favorite album to get a conversation going and when they answer "Oh, I just bought it for the looks." Things might get awkward and I walk away like "Okay, nevermind." But that's the worst that can happen, you either find another topic to talk about or again, walk away and get on with the day. People who flip out on that topic are one of two things, if not both. 1: They take Metal waaaay too seriously. 2: They're fucking mental. The same can be said about some metalheads and the genre subject. A newcommer calls Slayer a Death Metal band and everyone around that person is ready to crucify him. We all had no idea about metal at some point and bought stuff because of their looks. Hell, I bought my first three albums that introduced me to metal by the cover art alone. (And Justice for all, Master of Puppets and Kill em All btw.) Before I ramble on some final words: Some people need to get over themselves.

I personally disagree with people wearing band merch from a band they have never even heard of, but what somebody else wears is none of our business. It isn't effecting our enjoyment of a band. As cheesy as this is, I believe the phrase "Metal is passion, not fashion" is relevant here. Stop caring about what others wear and enjoy the damn music you crybabies.

I absolutely love your video. We went through this in the punk scene in the 90’s. I totally agree with you. All the energy wasted on this anger is absurd. Metal heads and punks just want to preserve their cultural signifiers without having to come up with new ones. I think cultural symbology is an important part of music and fashion. Creativity is also very important. When a scene feels it’s signifiers have been diluted it’s not a reason to get angry. It’s a call to be creative and innovate/come up with new ways to present the music and fashion. Great video!!!

I find it kind of fun, actually, to listen to what non-metalheads have to say about metal music. It is interesting, because you feel like a scary monster in front of innocent villagers; and it's also cool to let other people try to interpret you and your music from their own perspectives. It can be an enriching experience. I say people who suffer and get all mad about "outsiders" getting in touch with the metal world (however superficially), should instead see the whole thing as I do: it is actually interesting to meet with different opinions. That's it. Let them get in touch with our beloved music (or scene) however they want, and instead of arguing with them, let them talk and analyse what they have to say. For instance, I once saw a funny video where a metalhead interviewer visited the grounds of a Justin Bieber concert and started asking random Bieber fans what they knew/thought about metal music. Well, there are two possible reactions to such a video: (1) the dramatic reaction, where you'd start arguing and getting all mad about it, and (2) the better reaction, where you'd sit back and enjoy what people have to say (because you'll surely find some of those things really amusing!). So, chill out, metalheads! lml

I personally see a small issue with wearing metal shirts as a non metal people. And that is that sometimes it is easy to see who i have a common interest with based on their band shirt, that way i can choose weather i want to spend the time introducing myself, wearing band shits you don't listen to kind of ruins that. However this is an extremely small problem, and i really don't care all that much about it. So even though there is that minor annoyance i don't give a shit if someone is wearing a slayer shirt they know nothing about. This issue mostly arises when i am in a group of people that i have to be around. I don't just go up to random people on the streets and ask them about slayer. It also has the advantage that more hot women are wearing metal shirts, I find that style of dressing quite attractive, so even though they are not metal, it makes them more pleasing to my eyes, which is a good thing obviously.

@IAmMyOwnGod666
@IAmMyOwnGod666 8 жыл бұрын
You have really good points there Ed, and I think your comparison to mjölnirs, and 666's etc. is very accurate, because it is exactly the same logic. However, the reason, or at least one of the reasons why I think people are like "You shouldn't wear a t-shirt of a band you don't listen to" and react the way they do is because metal has always been an "outsider" thing. People who usually really get into metal are the misfits and outcasts in school etc. and they are the ones who "normal people" don't understand or accept, but then when they find metal, they usually find like-minded people that accept them and this often sparks this "Fuck the mainstream/normal people, I'm a metalhead" mentality, and you actually become proud to be something that normal people don't understand , you have your own thing and thus the whole metal lifestyle can become very personal. So now you see these non-metal "normal people" suddenly wearing band t-shirts, among them possibly ones from your favorite bands, and these people that never understood you and from who you distanced yourself suddenly turn your lifestyle, your own thing into a fashion statement and essentially into something mainstream and that's why you get protective and angry and that's why I sort of understand the reaction of some people to this. Now whether or not these reactions are reasonable or rational is a whole another topic... I think not and personally I don't give a fuck if someone who's not a metalhead wears a band t-shirt, because as you said, it's not really the biggest issue in this world and it doesn't affect my life in any way whatsoever. I'm only concerned what I wear or don't wear because that's the only thing that has any effect on my life, not other peoples clothing choices.

yeah it's just a shirt. the worst thing that would happen is if you try to start a conversation with someone wearing a shirt from a band you like, and they tell you they don't listen to them. a potentially awkward conversations sure, but you could also spin it and keep talking to them about metal and possibly get them into a new music genre.

Hey Ed I gotta tell ya, you nailed this on the fucking spot with precise accuracy! I especially liked the metal phase that you acted out, very well executed! Its kinda funny how I've never had to deal with immature behavior from metal-heads when i see them at work, they see me wearing a metal shirt and we chat for however long we chat. though online because they feel safe and anonymous they can let their inhibitions run free and monkey chatter other people like triggered apes. When I'm at work I meet a lot of people wearing shirts from the band H.I.M, when i talk with them about it they don't know its a band but the logo is cute an I always tell them, definitely listen to there music because its very beautiful....and that's it. i hope this video gets shared everywhere because people do need to understand what they're making metal look like. you should do more in between comedic scenes/videos with Baldrick. It seems that in the fashion world it is more important how clothing looks, instead of what it means. That's what I think is interesting about this topic. When a shirt looks good for someone, but represents something, this person is completely against, he might still buy it, because he might not even recognize what topic this clothing represents. This can of course create a lot of confusion for people who are actually into this topic.

Honestly I see your side, however I do feel like there's a deeper problem and this is that people are letting themselves be dictated to an ever growing extent. We're at a point where people will pay £50 for a plain t-shirt with a tiny logo or wear a band t-shirt and then attack the exact same genre of music that they're wearing. However I definitely agree with people getting to butt hurt too easily. I think with there being so much of this topic (and others) going around eg.
