I honestly like the m.2 slots, it’s great for being a clean build with minimum cables but taking lanes and slots away is not the best. Most people probably won’t buy the m.2 cards so I can see why having the slots built in is an idea.

From a shear performance /oc standpoint, running a simple 1 x GPU, 1 x m2 and 2 sticks of quality ram dimms, being the most recent produced board...isn't this the perfect board to get most out of your cpu/ram considering the overkill vrm setup? (leaving out the non dual bios aspect ) Maybe I am not seeing the issue.. I have a x570 unify, but an wondering if I shall exchange it for a b550 unify-x?
@dostoveskiee
@dostoveskiee 3 жыл бұрын
How much a difference is the vrms on the b550 master vs the vision D? Is the difference that significant to choose one over the other in terms of just overclocking? Would it be an issue of power delivery or cooling? Vision D's flat heatsinks look like it could be modded pretty easily with some aftermarket heatsinks and thermal pads if cooling was the only issue. I may be regretting my purchase after watching your video tbh D:

OH that's the reason my X570 pro just switching bios revision randomly when i had a pretty severe crash and all my settings were gone. I'm not a overclocker, but setting up XMP and RAID after every crash is tbh pretty ass. Do have a question though, the highest LLC setting in my bios is limited to "turbo", but with that setting on full load i'm still noticing a 0.05v+ voltage drop when in full load (101W, early 3700x). Is that normal?

If I understand this correctly for the B550 Aorus Master the M.2 slot nearest the CPU has direct Gen 4 lanes to the CPU, but the remaining M.2 slots share the 16 lanes with the GPU. So what happens when you use Gen 3 M.2’s in these slots that share the lanes with the GPU, do they still use these same lanes to the CPU or do they connect to the chipset instead, allowing the GPU to use all 16 lanes?

Buildzoid rants about gigabyte dual bios, my reaction: yup. Gigabyte dual bios is workable, but it most certainly is an anti-feature. Even keeping it without adding physical switches they could improve it a lot by a making it visible on which bios chip they are on, and by just adding a way in software / bios to switch chips.

Dual BIOS on Gigabyte boards is the worst. I have a X570 Aorus Pro and a Ryzen 5900X. The board was shipped with an older BIOS so I had to use QFlash Plus to update the BIOS to a version that supports the new Ryzen CPUs. Worked well. Until the board by itself switches to the backup BIOS which is again the older version without Ryzen 5000 support meaning the PC won't boot until I QFlash Plus again. I tried the F30 and F31 BIOSes, it tried Qflash with "also update backup BIOS", I tried the same with @BIOS from Windows. Still the same. And what is best? The boards switches to backup BIOS even if the PC is disconnected from wall power for more than a few minutes. Not even a failed boot has to occur. Gigabyte Dual BIOS is really an anti-feature.

Only if you install PCIe 4.0 SSDs into the 2nd or 3rd M.2 slot. The Unify can also be manually set to run those slots off the chipset (though only PCIe 3.0 x2 each), which leaves all 16 PCIe 4.0 lanes for the top x16 slot.

The M.2 slot proliferation is the reason I'm still running 1950X. None of the TRX40 boards have 5 pcie slots like my X399 does. As I'm not an overclocker I am actually considering upgrading to the ASRock Rack ROMED8-2T mostly for this reason. Like you say, PCIe slots can be converted to M.2 with cheap passive adapters, so I don't know why people get all excited by high M.2 slot count. With that said, I do think some of the problem could be alleviated if companies would come out with more non-SSD M.2 devices. For example one of my PCIe devices is an IDE controller so I can run an LS-120 drive for copying files such as network drivers over to retro systems. There's no reason this couldn't be an M.2 card, and in fact could be installed into an M.2 slot that's located under the chipset like some boards have. So in some ways an M.2 slot *could* be more flexible if the expansion is entirely internal. But that's not where we are today, and I suspect this type of use will continue to be overlooked for some time. Speaking of M.2 slots not occupying the space of traditional PCIe slots, one could get M.2 to PCIe x4 adapters and then use riser cable to use the vertical mounts on many cases today. Effectively allowing you to go past 7 slots in standard ATX. So there is a happy middle ground, but not holding my breath that anything will change there.
@g4anode
@g4anode 3 жыл бұрын
To me those M.2 slots (not on those boards though) are useful because my 2 gpu's take up ALL the space. Even if there was a normal pcie lane there, I literally can't access it.

I do agree that 3+ m.2 slots on something that isn't an HEDT platform is just silly, for much the same reasons you already listed. IMO, two on a mainstream platform is fine. But I'm also the kind of fella that would also want to have a dedicated sound card, capture card and if I ever had a use case for it, an internal wifi card as a way to fill out the expandability, in addition to whatever needed for more (fast) storage. As it is, trying to figure out if there are any viable mATX upgrade options past AM3+ because my fx based cube pc might not be cutitng it for the home theater duties I was expecting it to do. It just croaks in trying to encode an NDI capture, where an old(er) Sandy Bridge handles it. but the case it's in can't fit more than an mATX, and mITX is too limited to be useful to me.

Good that I kind of randomly ended up here. I just plan to buy a B550 board and was searching for one with 2xM.2 slots, so I can continue to use my old SSD. If a very cheap adapter card is all I need, I do not need to think about M.2 slots at all.

Yes but you can still do stuff with m2 slots beyond wifi and data storage.. Eg. Asrock just released an m2 vga video card. It's very rudimentary, but it's a start.

Adapter card for m2 restrict airflow so m2 is better for normal use with overclocking, especially when you have 3 pcie slots, and usually ppl use one for gpu, sometimes 2, very rarely 3.

Truth. My Crosshair Hero drops the 16x slot to 8x if you put an NVMe in the CPU slot. If you use the chipset NVMe M.2 the bottom 4x slot stops working, so I have to ram my 10GBe card in the 8x slot, which drops the 16x to 8x. Which is why I don’t use that board any more. So, I’m back to a Z390/9900K. However, my Strix B550I doesn’t do this.

G'day Buildzoid, Totally agree, especially the Unify-X as it is supposed to be an OC Motherboard, why do you need so many M.2 that take away from GPU performance, that seems more like a business use case, not a Motherboard meant for OC playing with CPU, RAM & GPUs

Why Gigabyte's rev 0.2 board, i.e X570 master, Xtream are better in memory oc then previous one? I have 1.0 X570 Aorus master and they fucking updated it just when I bought. Same for 3080, i was able to buy 3080 Master from retail shop, and they released second revision of it with 3 x 8pin connectors. I mean made up ur mind before releasing or delay the launch.

I got the B550 Unify non-X simply because of the m.2 slots :) Sure, I could always buy some add-on card, but that just makes the whole build less clean. And, adapter cards aren't exactly free.

Hi - You mentioned at the end of your video you'd like thoughts and suggestions. With that in mind, I think videos like this are a lot better when they are more concise. I appreciate that a 'rant' is a little 'loose' by the very nature of it being a 'rant' but nevertheless that's where I feel there is room for improvement. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Ryzens can do 2.000 MHz. It's just that the motherboards are generally crap at it. You'll need to select the right board, with the right memory and pair it with a decent PSU. That's a couple of IFs not many are willing to do.

The only advantage of having M.2 laying on the board, rather than on a PCI-E breakout card, is the low profile. If you install a GPU with a 3-3.5 slot cooler, that is probably going to make it impossible to plug in an adaptor card to a slot that gets CPU lanes. Or you would have to drag the CPU lanes all the way down to slot 6 or 7, which is a signal integrity nightmare for PCI-E 4.0, and on top of that, having your second x8 slot at position 6 or 7 might make it difficult to use it for a second 3 slot GPU in normal cases.

No dual bios on an ATX board in general is a no go for me. I've been buying mITX since 2014 though so I'm almost locked into asus's impact series. I run the DTX impact VII x570 and that board is overbuilt as hell. No dual bios though and even think the eeprom is socketed but that board already has so much more than a mITX should. Without need for compromise though on an ATX board its pretty dumb not to.

You could potentially use $40 M.2 PCIEx4 risers to jump the SSD bays into open PCIEx4 slots, I have done this with AMD 16 lane GPUs on Intel Z170 and X370 motherboards, so I assume it would work for other add in cards on most other boards. Though granted, the design of these boards is totally awful. Where are the good 4 slot boards with sensible PCIe lane configurations.

18:50 Have also been driven temporarily insane by Gigabyte's dual BIOS implementation. I don't do a lot of overclocking but I do like to run multiple OS's so I'm often tweaking things in BIOS to try to hit upon settings that deliver the best performance across Windows, Linux and Mac OS's, especially with the latter, when a simple BIOS setting can make all the difference between bootable and not. One of the things that keeps on coming up with Gigabyte mobos is that the dual BIOS is inherently unstable because of the way it "automatically" switches from M to B chips. I've had to reflash one board with a CH341a programmer because the bottom line is that the B BIOS doesn't actually do its primary job of providing a back up. My point is that this random switching is happening with very very basic changes to BIOS settings, and isn't just happening with the more extreme tweaks and testing to the point of crashing that's part and parcel of overclocking. 20:49 Should have listened to more rant before posting :) Buildzoid said it already ! Also more generally (re M.2 and PCIe) it's extremely frustrating that marketing departments seem to be endlessly setting agendas that actual users have no interest in whatsoever, especially when it makes the boards less effective and really stupidly, more expensive to manufacture. I loathe Apple for all kinds of reasons, but far and away their worst crime has been to show other companies that you can get filthy rich by being supremely arrogant regarding customer feedback . . . "They don't know what they want, we have to build it and then tell them they want what we sell."

There is a very easy trick for draining 5Vsb power: you try to power on the board immediately after you have flipped the switch to off on the PSU. The board will still have 5Vsb, and try to start up everything, which will drain the capacitors of the PSU. Or alternatively you could find some USB ports that stay powered from 5Vsb all the time, and plug in something dumb, like a USB coffee cup heater that drains power continuously. OR, you could also solder a large power resistor to the back of the board, between 5Vsb and GND.
