I think this new era of JonTron is very "trying to find his way", and it makes perfect sense in the context of everything that's happened to Jon for a while now. The controversy with his debates, and how it led to his removal from Yooka-Laylee (a spiritual successor to a game he deeply cherished with all his being) and his exile from NormalBoots (with so far as PBG throwing Jon under the bus on Twitter at one point; note that I don't necessarily agree with Jon's views either but it wasn't very class to sow the seeds of a public fight when Jon had already been sent out of NormalBoots already)... added on to, ofc, Jon's departure from Game Grumps and the awkward sendoff atmosphere that early Dan era had... it just makes sense why Jon would be a little bit done with gaming content when there's so much competition in that subject, AND he had pretty much no allies left from the gaming KZbinr world anyway. Not to mention, most especially, on Game Grumps, Jon had often chimed in on how he wanted to really do a TV show type of program; he's made it clear that what he values is beyond video games, and recall that in early GG, Jon actively felt like the channel's work was not very value, as though it was a cheap distractive thing that kept Jon and Arin away from their "real channels". It took quite a while for Jon to come around to the spirit of Game Grumps. Now I've realized I've typed quite a bit (way more than I expected), but I do want to be thorough, and I know that the Digibro audience doesn't shy away from analysis of any sort. While I've pointed at some of the conditions for modern JonTron, I do believe that (as others have said on sites like Reddit in the past) he holds himself back by not playing to his strengths. Jon Jafari is, I believe, an amazing improv comedian, he's got such a vibrant personality that colors a room in seconds. Game Grumps is still, in my perspective, a collection of Jon's finest works, where you can learn truly so much about him and what exactly makes JonTron proper, so funny. I don't suggest this as objective fact, but I really would like to see what would happen if Jon relaxes and lets loose with a much more freeform style of program once more. So, with all that said: Just give it some time. I think Jon will find his footing eventually, he just needs some time to heal. It doesn't mean that you MUST enjoy modern JonTron, it just means that this is an odd phase for Jon, I am entirely sure that Jon himself knows that, so he'll center his vision for what he really wants to be doing in time, I'm sure. [My credentials for all this, don't mean much... it's not like I know Jon personally, so I'd never presume to be so accurate. But I have seen every Jon Grumps episode, every JonTron video... everything he appears in really, except for some of the really early pre-JonTron obscure stuff. So I do apply myself to trying to know the way the wind blows, with my favorite non-anime KZbinr.]

It’s rather sad, what he wants to do doesn’t quite suit his strengths.

so basically what your saying is Jon is an idiot who never truly understood what was good about his early output and was actively chasing a format that was ideal to him but way way way way worse.

I think Jon's strength was always his editing gags, 2012 to 2015 was his best stuff imo and most still holds up. A lot of it's got this high energy craziness to it. Coked up sonic team is still great. I did like the movie "reviews", but the recent reaction videos are pretty poor.

I definitely disagree about Bestguyever being superior to JonTron now-a-days. BGE comes off as WAAAAYYYyyyy too tryhard, and honestly I would hardly even call him a comedian. I like his perspective on things but his character is kind of annoying and unoriginal. I love Hippocrits channel, but the comedy kind of takes a back seat to the actual reviews of the games he covers. JonTron is funny, and I mean like naturally funny. Not many people are like that. However I do think that the majority of his recent videos are completely missing the mark (the odd format, the needlessly high production values, a focus on reaction content). Jon still has it in him to make great content, but he's just focusing on the wrong type of videos ATM.
@onimaxblade89885 жыл бұрын
I think he knows BGE is part of the PCP if he's on After Dark. I agree somewhat tbh. Best Guy is no comedian. He's got a good gimmick, and he's got some charisma and jokes, but the persona ain't even on the majority of the time, and he's just Nate being Nate no matter what, which ain't 10/10 material.

I like that you said the thing about the "delivery" a lot of people criticize Dunkey for "not being funny", because the jokes "don't make sense" or whatever, but it's not really supposed to be the content, itself, it's the way it's told. I think a lot of people don't understand delivery, kind of like they don't understand what texture does to food. Even though spaghetti and Fettuccine are ostensibly wheat noodles, basically exactly the same, if put the same sauces on them they are going to taste different just out of the sheer fact that the shapes and textures are different.

I would say JonTron's height was everything from his Space Ace video to The Zoo Race. A talking Cat was the last decent vid and Jon & Ethan Learn Kung Fu was a good skit video. Everything afterwards is just forgettable and stale. and yeah i've been saying for a while that his newer videos do feel like watered down H3H3. and HOW is Flex Tape considered one of JonTron's best videos to some people I really don't understand.

Lets be honest though, the "Werewolf on a dolly" joke in his Howling 2 video was pretty hilarious.

some of the AVGN episodes were kinda weak (after the intial run of classics that made him popular, but before his higher-production episodes that he still makes now) i don't think you can exceed the guy who created the thing exactly, jon's always going to have that potential to be first to the ball with some new style - he's a tend-settter, not a trend-follower. Even if you've out-grown him, that can be reason enough to keep watching, it's what has me keeping up with the nostalgia critic lol - they're interesting people

JonTron's videos are very memeworthy. Comedy takes a backseat to a good meme, and I know memes.

the funniest thing about Jon Tron is how the algorithm refuses to punish him no matter what he does if he puts out a video no matter how long in between the videos he still gets a million views no problem if not more where as other people miss a week and they get shit from the algorithm for a month before it starts recommending them again it is weird
@btbwilkinson5 жыл бұрын
Maybe it isn't the algorithm, but a fan base that loves his videos and comes back for all of them.

I’d have to disagree. His comedy is not just about reactions. In both of the newer videos you cited I could easily point to things that are categorically jokes. Flex Tape: puts the tape over Snowden Work Safety: Does a yoga pose because the odd music in the video he’s watching sounds like Hindu meditation music I’m not saying you have to find those jokes funny, but I think your assessment is inaccurate.
@WheediesManchild5 жыл бұрын
While I agree, I do think John is more inspired to make his more film reaction now then game videos. And for doing what he wants I have no problem with.

I haven't really cared for the higher production Jontron videos as well. They usually end up being really popular but aren't that funny. I thought the old gaming videos had good replay value and were actually pretty funny. I don't usually have any desire to rewatch the newer videos. They are mediocre basically. High production doesn't automatically make the video good and worth rewatching. They aren't memorable to me at all basically.

Jon became a meme, and never really figured out how to recapture that magic. I don't like the camera that looks like it's auto tracking his face. I think the flexseal video is only popular because Phil Swift has been a meme for a long time, I had a tornado ripping through my area last night and they said "that's a lot of damage" and my immediate response, while hunkered in a closet with my family and Pet's was "Hi, Phil Swift here with flexseal". Memes can bring in a lot of people, so a living reaction image meme watching a meme, now's that's a fucking meme (even if the videos pretty bad). It's like if Tommy Waisu started a series where plays games, oh wait that's the Tommy waishow and that was like getting a lobotomy from a Parkinson's patient on Xanax.
