This perfectly captured my feelings on Yu Gi Oh and why I finally quit card games forever. The game just got too bloated and every card was needlessly complex. One more thing; they kept banning cards and releasing cards that made the old ones obsolete. Meaning you had to keep buying new cards all the time to be competitive. It just became a waste of time and money to me.

My Dad was a YGO judge back in 2003-2006 and ran a Control deck (feat. Yata Garasu) which was one of the most popular archetypes at the time. I currently run a Madolche deck that I first built in 2015 and have continued to update over time. A while ago we dueled just for fun. To see what was better, new archetypes or old banned cards. It was pretty even. He won some, I won some. Then we started trying other decks. My dad had an old beat down deck and I had a pendulum dragon starter that I improved. We started to mix and match a little. The idea of pilfering another player’s hand and deck until they can’t play anything and then playing Yata to lock them into surrendering is an old archetype but it plays very similarly to the way YGO plays today and is not any more or less complicated. At tournament level this game has not gotten any more complex. The only people it’s confusing are the ones that played YGO in the schoolyard and came back expecting everything to be the same.

in 2nd grade all the boys in class had to give a report on why yugioh was educational and we should be allowed to play it in school. we justified it cause of the math and then the teacher threw us a curveball and was like, "are the girl cards usually less powerful than the male cards?" and I was like "uhh well here you see I have mawevowent nuzzwer and thats a pretty good card thats a girl" good times in old early 2000's VA. I brought yugioh to that school.

Best game I ever played: My older brother was way better at the game than me, but somehow he managed to convince me to bet my Sapphire version against his Red version (pokemon). It was pretty unfair of him to do this and I don't remember how he got me to agree. He clearly agreed because he knew he'd win. Joke was on him. It was one of the only games I ever won - and via comeback too. The argument afterward was epic.

Magic is reverse Yu-Gi-Oh. The older you go the more busted the cards are. It’s a different game. You need formats to prevent everyone from wining turn 1 with their couple thousand dollar decks, you play with a sideboard so you can tech against your opponent games 2 and 3 out of three, it’s much more about synergies and deck strategies (at least more than Yu-Gi-Oh used to be).
@Julius0645 жыл бұрын
Yugioh used to be kinda similar, where some old cards were the most powerful. Things like card crush virus, reigeki, and dark hole were super op because they could instantly wipe your monster zone. Now powercreep is so bad they are off the forbidden list. I remember when I first came back to yugioh a few months before pendulums monsters were released and I was in shock to see dark hole at 2 and raigeki at 1.

Sure, but they are a different kind of broken. The old broken Yu-Gi-Oh cards tended to just do singular overpowered things, like wipe your enemies field or just refuse to die because of some effect. Old magic cards tend to not only be broken like that, but create beyond busted synergies that literally end the game without interaction. The “I gain a million mana, then play this card that copies itself a million times and attacks. GG.” Kind of busted. Granted that’s the REALLY old stuff, but to my knowledge even old Yu-Gi-Oh didn’t have much of that beyond Exodia. You just had a set of cards that were blantantly more efficient than anything else, so it made no sense for each player to play anything but those cards.

As a person who plays competitive Yu-Gi-OH. I can agree. Yugioh is a terrible game to play competitively. Power Creep has caused the game to become incredibly unbalanced. Though as a person who played Pokemon competitively in the 2016 format, I can say for certain that you do not need a deck full of EX cards to win. The EX cards determine rarity, not power. The two biggest decks at the time were Trevenant Break, and Night March. Trevenant used its ability to stop the opponent from playing item cards (which slowed the your opponent down massively,) in hopes of getting to your break, and finishing the game off by doing spread damage. It had fair weaknesses. Lysandre, a card that was used as a 2-of in every deck, could turn of the item lock for the turn. Night march was a deck that focused on sending night march pokemon to the discard pile, which would allow your Joltik to hit for a consistent 180 damage. Both decks only used one ex, Shaymin EX, and only used its ability which would allow you to draw extra cards.

"Haymaker" (a term which you would only hear from a Pokemon player) comes from the Pokemon deck from the Base Set/Jungle era of the Pokemon TCG which was heavily built around basic Pokemon like Electabuzz and Hitmonchan that could start attacking immediately with no setup required ("haymaker" is a boxing term, and Hitmonchan is a boxing Pokemon, and the goal of the deck is to quickly "punch out" your opponent before they have time to set up). In more general TCG terms, this would be referred to as an "aggro" deck.

I hate how the game is pretty much about utterly abusing your opponent in as few turns as possible and giving opponent as little chance of doing anything about it as possible. The object of the game should not be to keep your opponent from playing. You have to do combos like 8 chains long to be worthwhile, and monsters don't even stay on the field for more than 1 turn anymore. Completely agree that the game has been power crept the fun away. I only run joke decks now (by which I mean decks that run an obscure strategy for the LOLs, like making my opponent draw cards or spawning strong monsters on my opponent's side of t he field) and request that my opponent use a non-competitive deck to try to maintain some fun.

Magic avoids a lot of the "knowledge creep" Yugioh suffers from by limiting play to current blocks and sets. This lets them keep a rotation of foundational cards in play while introducing new mechanics that will only linger for a specific set. You still have to keep up-to-date (as, by definition, only cards from the current block are legal), but you don't have to worry about understanding every weird mechanic ever introduced into Magic to be a good player. This also has the nice side-effect of gracefully removing certain broken cards from play once strategies are discovered to exploit them.

Yea, there's a massive learning curve to modern yugioh, mostly due to confusing rules being built on confusing rules, with no thought being put into making the game easy to grok. I think it's a problem with japanese game design in general, they all tend to be cluttered in both visual design and effect descriptions. MTG is more complicated than Yugioh, but is easier to understand because it doesn't obfuscate the rulings, and simplifies how effects are written because they trust the players can understand certain phrases and shorthand. If you formatted yugioh cards with MTG's text writing sensibilities, you'd have a much more enjoyable game, even though it'd still have all the balance problems from Konami being a bag of dicks that just wants more money.
