The English "R" comes from the throat, I think, so when you move your tongue down, it comes off as a goofy "A" sound. Rolled "R" comes from the tongue, pressed against the front of the palate, and vibrating up and down quickly. The key is to curve it slightly upwards, and relax the tip so that it can vibrate, if you forcefully press it against your teeth, or you let it stick flat to your palate, you'll just end up throwing spit everywhere.
