@@adameves5970 One can definitely be considered a ballad. The entire first half of the song is similar to Fade to Black (which is a ballad). Just because it gets faster at the end doesn't make it not a ballad.

@@scope81 Neither of those are ballads. I think you have a misinterpretation. A song about war or suicide is NOT a ballad. On top of that, those Metallica songs are both written in AABB rhyme schemes. Not typical of a ballad. Just because a song might be slower or melodic doesn't mean it is a ballad. Go read a book.

Heavy metal is probably the most misunderstood genre in music. There are many bands and lyricists in it that churn out deep and thought provoking songs. Just like rap & hip hop, it is often simply dismissed as juvenile, evil or not a true art form by people who never took the time to examine it with an open mind. “You have to dig through a lot of dirt to find a diamond”.

I’m a white guy from just out side of downtown MPLS..I love to see the younger generations, especially African American, giving a listen to the music I grew up on. We listened to late 80s early 90s rap from both coasts too... but I really appreciate you taking the time to listen to heavy metal.. love it. Watch the 70's movie Johnny Got His Gun, and you will see what this song was talking about. This music video was very disturbing when it first came out in 1988. Almost like watching a horror movie put to music. Johnny in this movie / video was a living corpse. His brain was working fine, but his whole body was mutilated because of a landmine that he stepped on in World War 1. He was screaming to die, but the doctors would not let him.

I'm a big fan of music as a whole. Metal entered into my world in junior high, and it took me to a new place. Music, no matter the genre should connect to your soul. If you're looking for more Rock/Metal - try Dio, killswitch engage, disturbed, sabbath, led zeppelin. If you want to see an example of Metallica's musicianship, listen to songs like "Orion" "Call of Ktulu" "To Live Is To Die" I picked those 3 in particular, because they are instrumentals.

The lyrics tell the story. The guy with the mask is a soldier. You can read the book or watch the movie Johnny Got His Gun. A young soldier is hit by a mortar on the last day of the First World War and ends up in the hospital without arms, legs, eyes, mouth and hearing. BUT his Consciousness is still there. The doctors covers his face because his face is very damaged. So the lyrics match exactly with the (movie)clips seeing in the Metallica - One video.

Here’s what’s going on: The song One by Metallica is based on the 1939 novel Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo which is about World War 1. It describes the life of a man who goes to war and is a victim of a mortar blowing up in his face which robs him of his ability to see, hear, smell, or taste and blows his arms and legs off. He comes out of a coma while in the hospital and during his time there he reflects on his life and the things his father had told him. Eventually doctors grow worried because he keeps having spasms all the time but doesn’t seem to be dying from them. They call in the general who has no answers for the spasming but a soldier alongside the general recognizes the spasming as Morse code. The general then asks what he’s attempting to communicate and the soldier replies with “Kill me, over and over again. Kill me”. It’s about a wounded soldier who cannot see, cannot taste, cannot hear, cannot smell, and has no limbs but is very much alive and wishes for death in a constant state of regret and sorrow. A specific passage from the novel inspired the song: “How could a man lose as much of himself as I have and still live? When a man buys a lottery ticket you never expect him to win because it’s a million to one shot. But if he does win, you’ll believe it because one in a million still leaves one. If I’d read about a guy like me in the paper I wouldn’t believe it because it’s a million to one. But a million to one always leaves one. I’d never expect it to happen to me because the odds of it happening are a million to one. But a million to one always leaves one.” In 1971, Johnny Got His Gun was made into a movie and this music video uses images and monologues from that movie.

Listened to you for the first time today, and one point I wanted to agree with you on, that even while I love heavy metal/hard rock music, the vocals with some bands can be sticking points for me even if I find the music part great. So, yeah, screamo vocals don't do much for me and are kind of a turn off. Fun fact about this track though, is that Metallica up till this video released said they wouldn't do videos. They ended up doing it because someone finally gave them a good idea for it and they basically rebelled against the current time cliches of metal videos at the time. Then, the song itself was controversial amongst the fans because of the slow parts not sounding like older Metallica. I kind of fall in with the haters gonna hate angle on the song. My favorite part has always been that hard break at the end and then through the outro, but I also liked how they built the song up with soft and hard parts till that point.

Some quick things; The song is about a real World War I event that was fictionalized and turned into a movie "Johnny Got His Gun" (which is the black and white footage used in the music video). The real life incident involved a french soldier who walked on a landmine and survived, but was deaf, dumb, mute, blind, and missing both legs and one arm, but amazingly survived and overcame his injuries. The soldier was able to use morse code to communicate with his doctors and began to beg for death, which resulted in one of the first recorded cases of medically-assisted suicide. The movie somewhat sloppily portrays this with the nurse trying to kill the patient, where in the real story a decision was actually made by the appropriate authorities to go ahead with the assisted suicide, as it was very obvious this poor guy had absolutely zero quality of life. Also, now that you have heard the song / seen the video, you should react to Netflix's The Punisher season 1 trailer. That trailer is cut to the music of "One" and it's one of the best uses of a song in a trailer that I've ever heard.

I've been carrying misinformation for 30-ish years, so thanks for setting me straight, appreciate it!

KvngTwon rock sounds like idk just its not rock. Metal is more heavy tune. You should react Master of Puppets live in Seattle 1989 and Creeping Death live in Moscow 91’ (1.6 million people in that crowd). And Sad But True live in Moscow 2019 for how they look like now. They are making music for 38 years and one of greatest trash metal band ever.

@@NLTwon The grammy awards operated like that right up until this song came out, and then created the "Best Metal Performance" award so they could give it to these guys first. I'm dead serious. Putting metal as a subgenre of rock and roll is like calling R&B a subgenre of Jazz... *technically* true, but WAY beyond that point.

KvngTwon No. Just because there’s no screaming in it doesn’t mean it’s not metal. Not all metal is screaming. Metal started out with only singing. There’s plenty of metal out there with no screaming/growling if those types of vocals scare you. For example, power metal bands like Dragonforce.

Watch the movie 1917 although this particular song is about WWII. The song is about the horror of war for the boots on the ground. And to think that we watch via TV with a disinterest that is inhuman. This is a powerful anti-war song.

This is without a doubt the most controversial video ever aired on MTV. It's based on a movie that was in turn based on a book. The book and movie are titled "Johnny Got His Gun". You already obviously know that it is about war, WW1 to be specific. But it goes even deeper than that. Something not very many people catch because it's a lot to take in with a single sitting, it's about medical experimentation. In the beginning of the video you can hear the doctor claiming that " A decerebrated individual cannot experience thought, pain, memories and will be as unliving as the dead until he joins them.", further saying "If I were not sure if this I would not have permitted him to live." Later in the video you find out the doctor is very wrong when the patient is searching for a way to communicate, resorting to Morse Code to tell them to kill him and end his suffering. This video finally beat Michael Jackson's Thriller as the number one video of all time to air on MTV, not because of the money spent or the theatrics involved, but because of the thought provoking and controversial dark subject matter. Until this video aired, many people were completely unaware of the use of humans as guinea pigs for scientific experimentation. It is because of this video that people are aware of what was done by our own government to the Tuskegee Airmen and other cases of cruel medical experimentation.

You should check out Satellites by Periphery. Its a good track to get into modern metal. It has mostly singing and amazing musical talent. The lyrics are a powerful message as wellm about how our society or maybe more so the government seems to operate.

MetallicA BOUGHT the rights to that entire Movie in order to make this video . It’s called “Johnny Get Your Gun” if I remember correctly. The lyrics are about a man who went to war , and lost his ability to see , hear , speak , touch. Lost his arms and legs . And is just stuck in his own head and wishing to die .

Please react to the WHOLE In Justice For All album. I cannot just listen to one song, they are all one huge package for me. Just do yourself the favor....turn the lights off, put on your headphones, watch the video's or listen without videos. If you have to drink them energy drinks, find a bed to jump un and down on. That's what the whole album does to me. I want to jump outta my skin. I saw them when I was 20 in 1988 in San Francisco at the Cow Palace. Holy crap!! Best Metallica concert I've been to and I've been to 3 of them but that tour..oh dang!!!

I agree with you. I hate screamo and I’m a rocker chick from the 80’s. FYI Metallica’s guitarist Kirk Hammett, his favorite guitarist is Michael Schenker. He is the GOAT! Check out some MSG (Michael Schenker Group) The entire album Assault Attack would be a good place to start. Rock at its finest😎🤘🏼

Song is about a guy who returns from war. He stepped on a landmine. He has no hearing, He cannot talk, has no sight, no legs, no arms...basically a torso with with most of his face destroyed. He is suffering he is trapped in his mind causing not only psychological pain but physical pain. Unable to speak he wants to die. He wants God to help him stop suffering. He want to die ending all suffering.

Metal...and coming from a guy who grew up in NYC listening to rap, house, freestyle, club music when I heard Metallica for the first time back in high school, around ‘85-‘86, I was blown away and they became the only Metal band I love and still listen to and follow! It’s not that noisy messy metal music...Metallica has character! You need to see their live performances tho!!! 🤯

The video is from a movie called Billy's got a gun. In the movie he lost his vision is a lost almost all his senses and he used Morse code to kill him which at the end of the movie she does. The lyrics of the song go with this movie. That one part that you said that you liked is Kirk Hammett playing the high notes on the guitar. What I like Lars Ulrich the double kick. I would not mind to see you react to Stone sour through the glass. Listen to those lyrics watch the video then the lyric video tell me what you think. The way you feel about rock and roll is the way I feel about r&b and rap.

You got to ease into metal and not every group is for everyone. Typically I don't like the growls and screams throughout entire songs. Slipknot screams but have some great music. It's all personal regardless of genre. There's many bands I don't like but appreciate the talent.
