One of my favorite anti-war songs. When this came out, there was pushback on it that it was "satanic," because it's Black Sabbath` and it mentions witches and Satan. I'm pretty sure the truth is closer to they just really didn't like being called out as `war pigs," especially crawling on their knees, begging for mercy on judgement day.

This is the band from which metal itself was birthed. With their debut self titled album, and I highly recommend you check out Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath. There was nothing else like it being played when it released

I was a teenager in the 1970's listening to this album--and this song in particular--over and over again. Loved your reaction to it! It's still one of my favorite songs to this day (at the age of 65). And like others here have said, it's one of the best and most blunt anti-war songs ever composed. Speaking of rap, the UK rapper/musician Ren and his band, The Big Push, do a live busking mashup of this song combined with Paranoid and two other "tracks" (listed under The Big Push War Pigs). Subbed!

Guitarist, Tony Iommi, cut off the tips of his right middle and ring fingers at work when he was 17 years old. Being left handed, he uses his right hand to Fret the Notes on the guitars neck; thus, he was told that he would no longer be able to play. Tony was determined to play again, so he made himself two prosthetic finger tips; by melting down the plastic of a bottle and forming it to each finger, then wrapping the forms in leather.

Bill Ward is really underrated IMO. He goes *HAM* on that 1970 performance! I think he was a power drummer every bit as good as Bonham. If I remember right Ward and Bonham knew each other, and I can tell from Ward's style that he was partially inspired by Bonham. I think Rat Salad is better than Moby Dick personally.

This song is originally called Luke's Wall. The almbum was orginally called War Pigs but the label was not cool with that as the wars in the U.S. Black Sabbath switched the name of the album to Paranoid and changed this song to Warpigs / Luke's Wall. Respect.

Black Sabbath is not Ozzy Osbourne. He was the singer. If anything it is Iommi’s band since he is on every album is he wrote all the riffs.

You should react to the self-titled Black Sabbath song. It's the first song on their debut album. For being the first noticeably heavy song of it's type, it's still freaking amazing to this day. Still sends chills down my spine 20+ years after I first heard it. And check out the studio version first if possible. I recommend the studio version first and foremost. But if not, the live version at Paris 1970 is pretty damn good also. And the version of War Pigs at that same concert is amazing. Bill Ward's drumming is off the hook at that concert to say the least, especially on War Pigs.

This is an easy on-boarding song for a fan of Hip-hop music. Black Sabbath began as an R&B band called "Earth" in the late 60s. They considered themselves to be somewhere between the Beatles and Bob Dylan in terms of stylistic aspirations. But their lyrics were always a lot darker, and guitarist Tony Immoi injured his hand, which made it difficult to play, so he had to loosen the strings and down-tune his guitar a bit, giving it that heavier grinding sound, as he adapted his playing style around his injury. Rather than trying to shoehorn the contemporary style into the band under those constraints, they instead doubled down on this darker, heavier tone, and wrote their songs to fit. Critics absolutely despised them, but fans loved it, it was new and could go places popular music at the time couldn't go. They carved out a pretty big niche and along with a few other bands in the following few years (Blue Oyster Cult, Kiss, Deep Purple, Atilla, etc) they helped define a new genre of music. But they do have deep R&B roots. You only need to listen to the Bass to hear it. Hip-Hop also comes from R&B, so stylistically, they're like cousins, lol. And when you go back this far, you can really hear the parallels. Especially in the bass riffs and the bluesy voice Ozzy brought to the table.

"War Pigs" is a song from the early 70s when the cold war and the danger of a nuclear war was omnipresent. There were nuclear bomb-proof bunkers for the politicians, while for the population there were at best silly duck-and-cover exercises. Additionally there were "smaller" wars like the Vietnam war ongoing. So that song expresses the feelings of many people (that weren't politicians) at that time. The song "Hand Of Doom" from the same album was written under the impression of heroin addicted soldiers returning the from Vietnam war. Compared to the 60s and 70s, the last few decades have been relatively calm and relaxed - at least for people in Europe and North America. When Black Sabbath started, the genre metal did not exist. They came from blues, jazz and rock and evolved their own genre. So they are at least the ignition and inspiration for the metal genre. When you make a musically time travel through the first six albums you can not only see their musical evolution but also you'll experience the ignitions of several metal subgenres (Doom Metal, Power Metal, Black Metal, Stoner Rock/Metal, even Symphonic Metal (e.g. Supertzar), or Thrash Metal). Fun facts: The lyrics at that time were written by Geezer Butler (bass). There are at least two reasons for the darker mood of many Black Sabbath songs. One is an accident of Tony Iommi (guitar) where he lost parts of two fingers and had to re-learn to play guitar with prosthetics on his fingers. To reduce the pressure of the strings he tuned his guitar down a bit, leading to their typical sound. The other reason is that at that time low budget horror films were quite popular and the band had the idea to create music with this vibe.
