He is Serj, not Serg, don`t do like this please. The most difference could be heard at russian language. Cause 'j" is pronouncing like [zj], but the 'g' in the most cases sounds like [ghe/gh]. And Serj is more Serzj, neither Sergh.

“I cry when angels deserve to die.” The song’s about the societal standard that people who overdose or take their own life in some way are lesser. Even though depression can strike down the most beautiful souls. “Why’d you leave your keys up on the table? You wanted to” Indicates someone finding a clue that a loved one doesn’t plan on returning to their house. They’ll “grab a brush and put on makeup” because people often do makeup or wear a suit for their suicide. The singer knows that the dying person will be treated with distain by many and is lamenting it.

I always understood the song to be about Suicide Bombing. Self-righteous suicide.
@mjvdg4194
@mjvdg4194 3 жыл бұрын
See, to me “self righteous suicide" refers to people getting the idea that suicide is the one correct thing that they can do. Not intending to get too dark, but talking as a person with depression especially; it's common for people to believe that literally the only thing they can do right for the world is take themselves out of it. When even that is greeted with guilting and condemnation, what is there left? "Why did this angel deserve their death"?

First time I heard of SOAD, I was at a fairly intimate venue in Denver and was there to see Clutch. My friend and I were hanging out at the bar and a guy comes walking up to us and starts talking. He had dreads down to his waist and neither of us knew him. We talked for around 20 minutes or so and then he said "Well I better get back down to the front with my friends cause the show should be starting soon and I don't wanna loose them." About 10 or 15 minutes later the band starts to walk on stage and lo and behold the guy we had just randomly spent 20 minutes chatting with walked out and grabbed the mic and they started playing. My friend and I just looked at each other with jaws on the floor in complete amazement as we realized we were talking with Serj.

In an interview, Daron Malakian explained, "The song is about how we are regarded differently depending on how we pass. Everyone deserves to die. Like, if I were now to die from drug abuse, they might say I deserved it because I abused dangerous drugs. Hence the line, 'I cry when angels deserve to die.'[6] The lyrics for the midsection ("Father into your hands I commend my spirit") were randomly picked out by Tankian from Rubin's book collection after Tankian was struggling for ideas.[7] The song was originally titled "Suicide" but Columbia Records forced the band to change it to avoid controversy.[8][9] The song title is therefore a wordplay: "Suey" is "suicide", "chopped" in half.[9] However, the band members claim this change was not caused by pressure from their record company; Odadjian said the band simply chose their battles carefully.[9] Most pressings of the album include an intro to the track where lead singer Serj Tankian can faintly be heard saying "we're rolling 'Suicide'" while drummer John Dolmayan is counting the band in.

@@uuasnyder That's an interesting interpetation. Those lines in particular are a lightly paraphrased version of what Jesus said when he was being crucified. In his pain, he had a moment of doubt, asking why his father had forsaken him and led him to this fate. I think the chorus line about "self-righteous suicide" is also referring to the crucifixion. I can definitely see the parallels with addiction though, thanks for sharing that.

"This may be the perfect song" "how do they exist? why do they exist?. I need to know more". This is basically my reaction almost twenty years ago at 13 years old. I had to catalog and learn every album/song of theirs after I heard Chop Suey. I love them all, SoaD brings something soo special that very few musicians or bands can bring. Tool comes to mind, but not many others. The subliminal and direct messaging all not only still stand to this day, but are even more so relevant. They are a timeless band that crosses all musical and cultural boundaries. They are a sound, a message and a feeling we can all relate to, even if only on a subconscious level. Welcome to the Fandom my man, definitely check out their earlier work. Some is a bit harder but they never miss imo and have incredible messaging. Prison Song, Sad Statue and Tentative are a must listen.

The song was originally called 'Suicide', but it was too dark both in theme and title for the suits at the record label to be released, they wanted something more light hearted. So the band came up with a "new" song with a "silly" name to take its place on the album. Clever. It's a masterpiece.

Hmmmm, funny to hear/see another person's first time experiencing SoaD. A very eccentric christian kid introduced me to the band nearly 20 years ago. We were hanging at my place with some mutual friends, and all of sudden he mentioned a band that I had not heard of before. When I said that I didn't know the band, his face lit up - he knew that I was going to love the band, he had no doubt about it. And he was absolutely right. I like to think he enjoyed hanging around at my place, because I never judged him - he was free to be himself, eccentricities and all. I don't know what he's up to these days or where he is - last time I spoke to him his religious fervor seemed to have completely consumed him. He didn't have to say that he judged me harshly for not having faith in god, it was all in his eyes - I couldn't even see the person he used to be anymore. It was almost like he was looking through me, as if he was stuck in a nightmare or a dream. But I 'm glad he showed me SoaD. And I hope that he's doing well.

When checking out new music, _always_ go for the studio version first. You can watch a live performance later if you wish, but for first impressions it has to be the studio version, if one exists. I clicked this video as soon as it popped up in my feed, but as soon as I saw which version you were watching, my enthusiasm died. I love this song, it's awesome, but if this recording had been my first introduction to it, I probably wouldn't have ever heard it more than once. I'm amazed that you enjoyed this as much as you did, but _please_ go watch the official music video.
