My brother just finished a 10 year bid last year. He earned his red seal for cooking while he was there. The man can take anything and make it into something spectacular. It's incredible how resourceful some people in prison become. For 8 years he would never eat in the cafeteria. He'd get other people to use their canteen money to buy ingredients and he would cook for them in return. The only thing that was a struggle was the lack of sugar and some fruits because inmates would make brew with them.

you don't need to worry about the boiled water melting the plastic because plastic melts at around 200c, while water boils at 100c. if it's hard plastic, it might get softened and reshaped, but it should be fine

Context for anyone who wants it, food in US prisons (idk how it is in other countries) is split into two categories: 1. The food they give you by default, it's the bare minimum to keep you alive and a lot of prisons get the food in a box that's labelled "not for human consumption", especially the meat. There's a whole bunch of shit. 2. Food you pay for, which is junk food, chips, ramen, cheese sauce, all that shit. But yeah, from someone who is subpoverty, when you're working with a limited resources, you do get very creative with food. You just throw shit together because if it doesn't work, it's still better than the alternative.
