Look up his name and he even made a video before his death about being optimistc that he's going to be fine because he's getting treatment and I thought so to until I heards the news while I was watching the next episode of Shield Hero.

Not sure, as Raphtalia wasn't with Naofumi in the manga, but I do know that Kyo is part of the main group of antagonists named vanguard of the waves, and has a lot of knowledge of the mechanics of the waves and anything related to them, especially the hourglasses.
